LOL! I forget the cover all the time.. I put a slice through the cover and attach it that way. Saves taking it back apart ;-) .. That drip/sediment trap is supposed to be 4" total fall. I heard you mumble you grabbed the wrong one, but I stress the 54 code for that. I was blown away by that tool to squeeze the galvanized together. What tool did you use for that? We struggle with 10 different lengths of pipe to make the height match and it is a pain in the rear.

@unclejohn37 3 года назад
Really? No drip legs? I am in Alberta , Canada. Well north and it is -40, -50 and have seen -60 degrees and we ALWAYS use drip legs! 100% it does not freeze. What freezes ? the gas :) the oils it catches/ mercaptans?, as it is there for that more so than dirt which should not be in a gas line. I have never heard of not using a drip leg on any job with any amount of distance in piping or a vertical rise.
@boby115
@boby115 3 года назад
@@unclejohn37 . Massachusetts is the only one that doesn't follow the National Fuel code on drip legs. I guess they prefer the debris and the water just to go into the expensive gas valve. Massachusetts can not produce any documentation or information of incidents when Outdoor Equipment has drip legs installed. Minnesota, Alaska, Canada and ect (cold states) no problems reported.

@@ChuckBarron National Code States - install Trace wire along the pipe above or to the side. Contact with the pipe is allowed but should be minimized. Recommended separation 2 to 6 inchs. The wire should be installed continuous with no splicing. Trace wire shall not be taped to the pipe. Trace wire shall not be wrapped around the pipe. Trace wire shall not be connected or in contact with any other foreign installations or other utilities. This is how I understand it and interprete it. What are your thoughts and interpretations?

? Cb the coupling in the fire box on the heater. IS that code? Heater manufacturers stress there is to be no fitting inside the heater that was not present when the unit was certified . Manufacturer manual or gas code overrides by whoever is more stringent. So that fitting should not be inside the heater as we have been trained via heater manufacturers. I thought it was also national code?

Makes sense I just assumed it couldn’t be used for some unforeseen safety issue.
@boby115

Nice job on piping in the pool heater but the piping at the gas meter does not come close to meeting the National Fuel code. Underground fuel runs need it's own shut off , insulated Union & pressure tap tee ( used for pressure testing the underground line). We had a feeling in the gas industry people would get carried away using the Megapress / ProPress. Still need unions at the appliances and components such as risers.
@ChuckBarron
@ChuckBarron 5 лет назад
Im gonna have to look into that. I did pass all inspections so now Im gonna need to still look into it.
@boby115
@boby115 5 лет назад
@@ChuckBarron I could tell you are a very good plumber / pipefitter by the way you tied in the pool heater and keep all your lines level and plumb. As for as tying in the gas meter I'm sure you would agree it makes sense to have a shut off , tee for pressure test ,a union ( gas industry likes to see an insulated Union to keep the electrolysis off the riser) & then tie the riser in. Now everything is easy, put a gauge on your pressure test tee , have your shut offs off ( easy pressure test ). Need to come back and replace a riser because the customer's Sprinkler Company necked it ( no problem, disconnect the union put a new riser in ). Pool Company calls in a poor gas pressure at the pool heater, no problem ( drop your drip leg hook up a manometer turn on the heater and if you're around 7 inchs water column, no problem - it's the pool heater ). Get some kind of wacky pressure like 3 inch water column , no problem hook up manometers at your pressure test tee and at the drip leg ; 3inchs at the drip leg and 7inchs at the pressure test tee ( Some kind of a debris or water is in the line ).3 inch at the pressure tap tee ,3inchs at the heater ( Gas company has a problem). Who would think just a shut off valve, Union and a pressure test tee could make life easier? I have No Doubt your installation passed the municipal inspection. The inspectors only know what they know. But with people like you willing to take the time and provide videos like this one we can all learn from each other. Keep up the good work.
@nspro931
@nspro931 5 лет назад
What code are you citing re: underground run needing its own shutoff and pressure tap?
@boby115
@boby115 5 лет назад
@@nspro931 . National Fuel code. A typical Riser installation would be #1 a shut off valve ( cock ) coming off the fuel run side of the meter set.#2 installation of a tee for a pressure tap.#3 installation of an insulated Union ( to give the Riser cathodic protection ; ground joint unions give no protection).#4 installation of the riser, paying attention to the depth mark on riser ( not to be below grade). Now let's imagine a future problem. Pressure test now made easy- turn the cock off, install gauge at tee, turn cock back on and back off ( you are now pressure testing the underground fuel run). Poor pressure >test made easy( install gauges at pressure test tee & at drip leg of appliance)- run Appliance and if the pressures are normal at both gauges the problem is with the appliance, if the pressure at the test tee is normal and the pressure at the drip leg is low, the problem is with the fuel run ( debris, kink or ect.). Let's imagine you need to replace the riser with that insulated Union in place, could I make it any easier for you? How would your installation look?
@morganali9636
@morganali9636 3 года назад
@@nspro931 not all cities require it. but it's standard practice for safety reasons and isolation reason to install a shutoff valve. it's cheap, it makes sense and in an emergency super uber easier to shutoff that section vs the meter valve and you can keep gas to your house while working on the line as well
@unclejohn37
@unclejohn37 3 года назад
I been a gas fitter for years and trained by someone super particular. Here are things I notice based on my career. #1 Tightening into the control valve with a nest of fitting all at once can crack the control valve.The way you did it would sink the threads on one side of the coupling and not so much on the other because you did not hold it with wrench. I would have tightened the coupling on the nipple first then install into valve. I also would have used one piece in NO coupling and lessen the risk of areas to leak. # 2 The pipe dope! Oh man! you had so much of it going inside the pipes that is a no no, it dries and will carry into the control valve over time, the drip leg will not catch it all. You know you should not get pipe dope on first 2 threads to prevent this. # 3 if you were going to purge the line via drip leg, why tighten it in before hand? that makes fittings more prone to leaks if taken off and reinstalled. I know I sound picky but I pride myself on ever aspect of my work. I was glad to see you clean up all the excess pipe dope..I also seen a second video where you did not have a drip leg at the heater and went directly into it yet the job was identical coming from a riser underground.
