Naturalistic Burrowing Scorpion Vivarium

So many of you have been hounding me to do a setup for an insect, arachnid, etc. for a long time and it's finally here! Today we'll set up a naturalistic vivarium for my brother's Tri-Color Burrowing Scorpion. She's a beautiful animal and needed an enclosure to match and that's why I'm here.
If you are looking for a scorpion that's always going to be visible than this isn't the one for you. It will spend most of its time in its borrows. That said, it will come out to feed and soak in the water dish from time to time. Also, like I said, this is not a care guide. If this is an animal you want to keep, go and do your research! They're not difficult at all, but you want to make sure you know what you're getting yourself into. These scorpions tend to be quite defensive/aggressive. I don't personally keep scorpions, but my bet for a beginner would be an Emperor Scorpion (that's what my bro started with). They're pretty timid and much more receptive to handling.
Anyways, maybe I'll keep some "bugs" of my own some day and do more setups like this. Also, my brother is trying to get more critters like this, so I'm sure he'll let me make more enclosure for him. If this is something you'd like to see again let me know down in the comments and I can definitely do so!
If you have any comments, suggestions or questions, leave them down in the comments! For additional content like this, photos of my terrariums and animals, projects sneak peeks and more, follow me on Instagram @SerpaDesign. / serpadesign

You should do a video where you make identical terrariums but don’t put springtails in one and then wait a month and show us the difference idk I just watched your lamp vid and got inspired

yeah, I also have some doubts those insects are necessary, but I have never had any terrariums.
@Edigor100
@Edigor100 4 года назад
you wont see much of a difference the difference is that - with springtails - you'll get less mold because they eat any rotting or degrading bio matter, like dead leaves, poop etc. this makes it a healthy eco system like you'd find it in the wild if you dont have springtails, it can still be a terrarium and it'll work, but it wont't be as easy to take care of as you will still have to do that manually

In a desert/arid set up they'll mostly be eating the scorpions droppings.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but she's not mine! I know many of you have been wanting to see this, so hopefully this will help you get your fix. 😂 Maybe I'll keep some "bugs" of my own some day and do more setups like this. That said, my brother is trying to get more critters like this, so I'm sure he'll let me make more enclosure for him. If this is something you'd like to see again let me know! ✌️ EDIT: Sorry that I didn't get more interaction shots of the scorpion in her home. As soon as she found a hole she went right in... never to be seen again! 🦂

If you do, I'll put in my vote for a cricket setup. Most people just keep them in boring egg-carton setups so its hard to find any ideas. I have a cricket terrarium myself, I just keep them for fun though, not to feed anything. Also, do you ever watch any of AntsCanada's videos? He's got some amazing terrariums!

This makes me miss keeping scorps myself. I used to have a colony of emperors, bark scorpions, and I had a dune scorpion (by far my fav).
@Brunnen_Gee

@Daniel Cordero Pretty easily, they're communal so as long as you have an enclosure with enough structure in it, and places for them to dig, they should be fine. For two you could get away with a 10 gallon tank, go a few inches deep with the substrate, and put stuff like branches in it. They'll dig and climb all over the place. If you want to get more, say five or six of them, go up to a 20 gallon long at least.

Being a hiker in the PNW, I *love* all the mossy setups. Just starting to get a few ideas, did a small fish bowl set up.. but looking for a good tank. I'm thinking for the back, taking a photo I have from hiking a forest to blow up for the backing. I have some photos from desert hiking around Moab that would be great for a setup like this though.

When you're keeping animals that need particularly dry conditions, it's always best to use fake plants for the animal's safety. Using live plants (even desert succulents) will cause dampness, especially when you water them. This is because (unlike in the wild) the water cannot escape into the atmosphere as readily, due to the constraints of the terrarium. I'm not exactly sure of the care for these scorpions but they may not appreciate the damp if they are a desert species. So the plants may look odd but at least it means he puts the wellbeing of the animal first and aesthetics second.
@SoftBreadSoftware

What @Rom said. Also it's a build for his brother, which may not be experienced with keeping plants and animals in the same vivarium. So I'm fine with the fake plants in this case.

You make gorgeous enclosures but I think, with burrowing animals, you have to let them make their own burrows. I was watching Clints reptiles about the Mantis Shrimp and the keeper from the Aquarium said that however you do their tanks, the mantis shrimp will tear it down and re do it the way it wants. I think its maybe the same with these scorpions, they are going to want to make their own burrows, no matter how nice you make it!

@SerpaDesign, if you ever re-do this set-up in the future. I suggest an egg-crate layer at the bottom with cocohusk on top. Allowing potential water to remain at the bottom, if any watering is done. Then clay the burrows but leave some viewing windows at the side. Then use a piece of cut paper to darken those chambers. Just so the pet owner can ensure the safety of the animal.

That's a really nice looking enclosure for a particularly beautiful scorpion! I'm just getting into scorpions, especially the parthenogenetic ones. I was wondering if you put any isopods in the enclosure, I didn't see any being added to the enclosure, and there are some species that actually do well in semi-arid environments. I was wondering what kind of springtail you used I've never had any luck using springtails in a semi arid environment as part of my clean up crew. Overall great video, thanks for sharing!
