I spent a bit more time exploring the old buildings at the mine site but nowhere near enough time to reveal all of their secrets. Definitely a site to go back to.
At Eastgate I forgot to mention the significance of Stanhope Park... but I will pick up on that at Stanhope and include a shout out to a RU-vidr who will be able to give more information for those interested in Border history. So look out for that one on the next Weardale Way video.
For those who were concerned about us trespassing on the railway... The Weardale Railway heads in the opposite direction from Stanhope and currently does not use these tracks. The tracks were used by Eastgate cement works until 17th March 1993 and have not been used since... although I believe there are hopes that the Weardale Railway will one day reopen to Eastgate. We would've kept to the sheep fields but were faced with a stone wall without a visible means of crossing it.
From the UK Government Health and Safety Executive (HSE):
"Bulls of recognised dairy breeds (eg Ayrshire, Friesian, Holstein, Dairy Shorthorn, Guernsey, Jersey and Kerry) are in all circumstances banned from being at large in fields crossed by public rights of way. Do not keep them in fields with public rights of way, statutory or other types of permitted access." www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/ais17ew.pdf
The water crossing the stepping stones doesn't look so deep on my camera but trust me that it would've been over my boots. Between 15-30cm (6"-12") deep depending on the stone. We will see if we can get away with starting our journey next time on the stones.

Haha in my younger years we had a pet long horn bull called billy at water head tarset . We bought him as a calf from Hexham mart and took him up in the back of the car sitting on our knees lol. Every time you went too see him he would come running up and stop inches in front of you. Got a bit unnerving when he grew too two tonne and grew two gaping horns but in fairness he never touched a soul. You’ve got more chance of getting chased in winter due to lack of grass as farmers will take bags of feed too them and they will come running for it. They think everyone is going to feed them lol. Take care freind and see you in near future👍

They use the steam trains on that old line then? Love old railways tracks and their history. No doubt this line was significant for mining communities?

I ran a learning center up at Crook, just south of Stanhope for 8 years and occasionally had to cover at Stanhope. Always enjoyed it up there, great place and great people. Although it was very windy it looked a great day with some fantastic scenery along the way. Dam annoying what the farmer did mind and there is no way I would walk through a field with bullocks or cows come to that. To be honest, I thought the train only ran up to Stanhope and not further on up the line.....LOL, the amount of times over the years, cars have been stuck at that crossing in Stanhope, always on the news. Great hike out and did you get my email by the way? Cheers Alan

I've been watching your videos as the official website is awful. It's a shame that no effort seems to have been made to keep the paths in place either. I wonder if the issues you encountered with the path being dug over are still the case two years later. Thanks for a great series!

I've not been back along that stretch since we did the walk, so I am unsure. At the time I got the impression that there was some animosity between the holiday makers at the nearby caravan site and the farmer. I get that a farm is a working place and we are just visitors but if the path bothers the farmer so much, they can fence it off to keep people to the path and stop them straying. To be fair, that small section, the farmyard at Wadley (mud and easily missed sign), and the bit going into Sunderland were the only problems we encountered following the Weardale Way. The OS map at Great Lumley has updated the change in route, so shouldn't be an issue anymore. Thank you.

Haha you should have just got the local train for local people. But to be hounest farmers do play these dirty tricks on walkers especially when they don’t want people passing through if there up to something naughty seen it all signs moved, earth made unwalkable even ex army unexploded bomb signs put up. But normally because there’s something to hide a bit like Royston vasey lol. Also it would be amazing to meet you been a bit bad lately but as soon as I perk up I’ll let you know nick. Take care 👍

I think your right with caravaners unfortunately things can get a bit complicated. I remember working on hareshaw farm. While helping out at the Bellingham show Chris bless him dead now treated me to a helicopter ride for helping him. When we flew over Some how they knew we weren’t there and decided to put up tents on the front lawn when we got back there was a bloke walking through the steam totally naked. Haha. Your doing nothing wrong nick just exploring life and the past and respecting what’s around you there’s nothing wrong with that. Take care bud

Northern Wayfarer well im not saying he doesnt farm fresain cattle and if that was even his land, and i understand that it is a public footpath and whatever but making a mess in the ground like that isnt always avoidable. dont get me wrong. i hate making a mess in fields. especially on footpaths but sometimes it has to be done

You can never trust animals I’ve seen nasty accidents especially with cattle and horses I call them accidents because there just animals following natural instinct but yeh I’d does happen and not worth taken a chance nick especially if you have the kid with you and like you say farmers should know better as most will have seen accidents Occur. Mind you sometimes I think the cattle may have more intelligence than the farmer. Lol 👍
