On a trip through the Navajo Nation in Arizona, an approaching storm cuts my visit to the Navajo National Monument short. However I discover free camping, explore the incredible scenery, and journey back in time with the ruins of Batatatkin, and the amazing dinosaur tracks near Tuba City.

I stumbled onto the Navajo national Monument some years ago, while touring on my motorcycle. Like you, I was stunned at the free camping and the spot I found was overlooking the canyon and just gorgeous. Back then there is no waiting list for the tour the ruins, just show up at the appropriate time. I took the tour down into the canyon which was well worth it. We had this incredible guide that was a Navajo history teacher, a veteran with only one arm. I remember he went up and down the Canyon trails like a stroll in the park and he was incredibly patient and knowledgeable about everything. it was certainly one of my most memorable visits to any of the national parts or monuments. I’m glad you found it and enjoyed it as well. One more thing, in the visitors center when I was there, there was an old Navajo woman weaving a blanket on a traditional loom, her work was slow and steady, but absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for showcasing the beauty of the desert and appreciating all that comes with it. The smell of creosote after rain is incredible. Petrichor is the best in the desert. Sigh. :)

Absolutely spectacular. You gotta love all those beautiful junipers. A very special thing they are. They can survive the worst of extremes. The grand staircase is now on my bucket list. The smell of desert-type vegetation is incredible. I mountain-bike in that kind of vegetation weekly and I can never get enough. I believe that whatever is in the air around them, gives you a kind of energy. Sure wish there was a way to bottle-it but I don't think it works like that. This was a very picturesque episode. Highly appreciated. Cheers. 👍

What an adventure! Just north of Cottonwood AZ is a tiny monument called Tuzigoot. It's rock & adobe huts built up into a hill and from up there, you can see evidence of their fields = they grew crops! There's also a small museum as well. It's fascinating to see how people lived so long ago. The ancient pueblo at Tuzigoot, consisting of two- and three-story structures with a total of 110 rooms, was built around 1000 CE by the Sinagua, a pre-Columbian people who lived in the pueblo for roughly four hundred years. Perhaps one day you'll visit. Regardless, I do enjoy your travels through the US and your dedication to finding beauty, history and documenting it all for those of us who can no longer travel. Thank you for your hard work.
