Watching RU-vid you would think that every motorcycle ride is exciting and dangerous, but really what we should strive for is boring and uneventful. Here is a short, boring video about navigating an intersection.

I've navigated a garbage truck in and around the city of Chicago for 34 years. I consider myself fortunate to have those traffic experiences while inside the safety of a truck. These experiences have saved me in so many ways while riding my motorcycle. My wife often says, "How in the hell did you know that car was going to do that?" I've seen it so many times that it's gotten to the point that I now expect certain driving habits purely based on the make and model of the vehicle.

I second this. I don't have nearly as much time in the truck as you do but in the 8 years of OTR driving I've experienced, it teaches you some very vital driving, observation and reaction skills. And that driver habit based on make and model is no BS either. There are some cars you just automatically go into "red alert" mode with.... And for good reason.

I like boring. It's my goal for every ride.

You said it at the end... "Pay attention" and anticipate bad driving habits. Also something that develops with experience is "seeing the escape or lack of". Where can I point the bike if such & such happens or do I have to adjust my speed to make a stop because there's no alt. way out.

One thing i would like to add is when coming to stop on the road you are also looking behind to make sure no one is barreling down on you. Great Video..

all good advice. rural towns have their hazards and sometimes we get lulled into approaching too quickly. my cue is when i start to see american flags clustered and know to slow down and be hyper vigilant. i like the lemon theme [yellow jacket] but just remember to give credit to the great robert johnson not that loud british bunch named after a blimp who like to steal other peoples music.

Great "non-eventful" video! I was just out yesterday riding for 209 miles, and my brain was actively scanning for issues. Parts of my ride were on local highways where speeds above the posted 70 and 75 (I'm in Texas) can be observed. I also passed through a town that was having an antiques fair, and one guy almost fell into the road near where I was! Made it home safe and sound, and glad you did as well!

Yep, boring is good. Also when going through our town, we have to look out for deer, bears, dogs, geese and the occasional gang of wild turkeys. 😅

All good points! I find it’s also very easy to be “thinking too far ahead” as I’m heading out of my home town. At times, I will be anticipating the good roads ahead and thinking about which route and so on that I’ve caught myself overlooking the here and now. Also, I drove truck hauling Heavy Equipment in past career, and the amount of inattentive drivers out there is alarming! Stay sharp Stay safe!! Enjoy your videos and perspectives !!👍🏼✌🏼

Ride like you are invisible is what I was taught many years ago. Yes, you have to babysit other drivers because they don't know any better some times.

Here in the UK, roads in our towns and cities are much narrower, and with a lot more traffic, often with cars parallel parked down both sides, so those roads there seem very wide open. That system of parking at the roadside, where you have to reverse out blind into the traffic stream seems poorly thought out, and a recipe for disaster.

Great video. I'm also in MA so contend with a lot of similar road situations. It wouldn't have applied in most of what you showed here, but I try to do the SMIDSY weave when I can.

Is that an Aerostich Jacket? Heck if you have to stop or slow down fast you have to worry about the Tailgater behind you. You should make a video like this in Morning Rush Hour Traffic in Detroit or Atlanta . You said they may try and pull out in front of you. It's more like "They didn't even take the time to stop and look and they never saw you".

Thanks Craig. All good points. I find myself pretty good at anticipating what other drivers will do, and it's been years since I've had to brake hard. However, I seem to have a very hard time with planning for an escape, if something does happens. I seem to spend all my time looking for trouble, and simultaneously planning an exit strategy just seems to be beyond my bandwidth. Any tips on how to get this engrained? Thx, Mark

I don't spend much time planning escapes either. I find that giving myself plenty of room is the main thing. Then moving in the lane to avoid issues before they happen.

@@LivingOffTheSlab I've found myself to be a spacer - the more I can rely on adequate time for braking, the better.
