In this video, we dive deep into the critical subject of consent for treatment in the field of EMS. Understanding the various forms of consent is vital for everyone in Emergency Medical Services.
Types of Consent Covered:
Informed Consent: This is the gold standard. We'll show you how to provide patients with all the necessary information to make informed decisions about their treatment.
Expressed Consent: Learn about the straightforward "yes" from the patient, either verbally or in writing, after comprehending the proposed treatment.
Implied Consent: When emergencies render patients unable to provide verbal consent, discover how to act in the patient's best interest while considering a reasonable person's decision in similar circumstances.
Parental or Guardian Consent: Explore situations where minors require their legal guardian's approval for treatment, with exceptions for life-threatening scenarios. Learn how to handle scenarios when no immediate threat is present.
Advance Directive, POLST, and DNRs: Understand how to respect patients' advance healthcare preferences when they cannot make decisions. We'll discuss the importance of following state-specific regulations and keeping documentation up-to-date.
Navigating Complex Scenarios:
Discover how to handle third-party callers reporting potential emergencies and situations involving suicidal ideation. Follow the links at the end of the video for videos on those topics. These videos have been verified by industry experts on their field.
Find out what to do when no legal guardian is available for a minor patient, and how to utilize implied consent while ensuring their well-being.

While I'm not any sort of EMS, as a former non-tech, Hospital support (30-years ago), previous unofficial home health CG (to a friend), and participated in Hospice, for a sibling... With my advancing age and conditions too, where I'll likely be my own _'RP',_ for evaluation, and potential EMS transport... much preamble to say, that I think this information presentation, offers good information for more than EMS, and aspiring responders too. Thank you! (and please try to get a human narrator, please?) Cheers- 👍
