As a Hull Maintenance Technician, the ship is your playground. You specialize in ship repair, and will work on every inch of metal on the vessel-fabricating pipes, welding sheets of stainless steel and fixing ship structures. You’ll maintain your own shop, but get to work on everything from the belly of the ship, all the way up to the pilothouse. In other words, if it needs welding, you’ll handle it. Trust your skills boys...I pretty much excel at anything I'm assigned to build after being a Hull Tech. From pipe welding to sheet metal it all translates.

i feel like contractors do more welding for the navy than being a HT
@lloydphilbrick6907
@lloydphilbrick6907 4 года назад
Yes, that can be true, I was an H.T. in the 70s, I did more plumming than welding the first couple of years.but as you say on deployment you do weld maintenance, once dockside much welding is done by civilian contractors. I got out in 1980, got one of those jobs as a civilian welder, did it for years, about ready to retire now, well set.
@lloydphilbrick6907
@lloydphilbrick6907 4 года назад
David Harrington are you still active duty? I know of many welding jobs available in my region.
@lloydphilbrick6907
@lloydphilbrick6907 4 года назад
David Harrington I'm in the Portsmouth New Hampshire area. They are looking aggressively for welders at the Portsmouth Naval shipyard, working on submarines. And at General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a bit further north in Bath Maine , working on the new Destroyers. I've worked both places, pretty good pay both. Nice country up here, cold this time of year. There is a shortage of welders here.
@lloydphilbrick6907
@lloydphilbrick6907 4 года назад
David Harrington actually after serving aboard ship, the civilian job in a shipyard is gravy in comparison. You work regular hours, get paid more, and never leave dockside.
@lloydphilbrick6907
@lloydphilbrick6907 4 года назад
David Harrington you can look them up on line, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Kittery Maine. And the other is General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Bath Maine. Both have websites, click on employment, follow the steps.

We get certifications that can be transferred to the real world. You’d have to certify BUT you do get experience. So that helps. But we leave with no civilian certs and home toilets are different than ship toilets/ sewage system. Been an HT for 8 years.

@@captainstars4430 definitely challenging but nothing nobody can’t handle. My best advice is to not take nothing the RDCs say personal. Clear your mind when you have free time and just keep staging focused. You’ll complete your test and inspections when you study and stay focused.
