Or maybe it can bump a teams seed placement up by 1, say if overall at the end of the season, a team places 7th the go to 6th seed and avoid the play-in....

Nah bro, its time to award thus guys more trophies and chance for trophies than only one. Like football(soccer) where they plays tons of leagues and championshios per year. American format of sport is amazing but its time they learn to have more leagues/cups, that makes the game more diversive and better. This gonna make some smallers and worst teams wanna play at their best at this tournment, and its a great incentige for players that think their teams doesnt have what it takes to be a champions

Those sports must incorporate many different tournaments and races because single one on one games aren’t possible, or won’t garner the revenue needed. Look, there are plenty of executives that know more about this than I do. I’ll admit that. But even most of the NBA legends agree with me here. This is nothing more than a grab for fair weather fans that don’t understand winning. Those that don’t understand what is actually important. Also, if an 82 game season is “boring” as you claim. Rebadging those same games won’t fix your boring issue. Restructuring the season could. Like begin after Jan 1. Go into summer. Avoid competing with football. You said more people watch college basketball? No, that’s actually not true. I’m not sure where you got that from. The ratings for their END OF SEASON TOURNAMENT gets good ratings. Any other IN SEASON tournament, does not.

@@timw8646 because they are more competitive which makes a better product for people who actually enjoy watching basketball… Other sports leagues have similar tournaments and the fans embrace them. A lot of teams have a bad taste in their mouth after that post season loss, it’s a good way to come back and compete for something that isn’t 9 months away. It also gives teams a chance to face good competition back to back to understand what their flaws are. Yes it’s not the Larry O’Brien trophy, we get that, the players get that, most fans understand that. It’s something different and unique.

Fun fact in English football we play for 3-4 domestic in-season cups! The league Title, the European Cup (Only in the premier League) ,The FA Cup & The English Cup (Top 3 Divisions of English only)

True, but do you know how much money the league makes each game? How much each player makes a game? They want to make more money, not less. You're definitely right though, but they aren't going to change that. If they did, I'd imagine ticket prices would sky rocket.

This tournament makes no sense whatsoever.. The games count as regular season games, they are just playing regular games then, with the effect of winning another possible trophy that means absolutely nothing. A tournament has to be played outside of regular season games, that's how it works in every other sport on earth. It also involves clubs that aren't usually in the main league, so it would have made sense if the tournament involved for example clubs from the G-league, or whatever. I really don't see the point of this thing, other than more stats and more money for players.

I think the key to rge success of this tournament is a contender to win the cup. If the finalists for this cup both are out of the play-ins after the regular season, this mini tournament will hold no value to teams or even players going forward

I’m still confused, if these tournament games are supposed to be built into each teams regular season 82 game schedule, how does that work when you get to the round of 8 teams as you obviously don’t know which 8 teams it’s going to be so how can those games be already built into the schedule? Those would have to all be additional games right?

Top seed teams will prioritize the finals championship, not this NBA cup, to avoid injuries. The lower seeded teams will go after this NBA cup cuz they have nothing to lose.

This is going to be somewhat entertaining. But it's going to be a little boring in a few years when teams would rather loose that stupid tournament if their players needed rest or rehab. It's not going to be a"play through injury" situation that the playoffs are after the 3rd or 4th year. I hope this comment ages well.....but then again, it's probably best if it doesn't.

I think the best thing about this is the NBA has cautioned teams against resting healthy players for this tournament. It has been a real problem the last few years, LeBron and Davis questionable every night and glass men like Kawhi sitting out for "load management". You would never see players like Dr. J, Jordan, Larry Bird or Magic sitting out with a hangnail back in the day.

Add incentives in NBA cup like they will get a a wild card spot in play in 9th vs 10th place (playoffs) incase the winner didn't manage to get standing requirement in playoffs. It will motivate all of the teams to win this single tournament.

As the NBA is clamoring to catch ratings like the NFL, stuff like this and the play-in are surfacing. If the NBA ran their season from Christmas to July, they’d avoid football overlap and get more ratings. Also, cut the season to 70 games and remove two teams from the playoffs. Only 6 get in per conference. These changes would surely increase the importance of regular season games, however the NBA would never cut out that many games, as each one is a revenue source. But a version of this would be much better than the mid season and play in tournaments, in my opinion.

i think 80 games is fine and from the week after thanksgiving - til May is fine. And Mid July is Finals time that way. All year round people can watch sports without the Owners sacrificing that much profit either. ⚾️ April-October. 🏈 September-February. & 🏀December-July. That way the only dead month really is March and August. but NBA Allstar festivities would be in March and hopefully a 1v1 tournament. Winner gets a no-trade clause and $5mil or something.

It could even be a pay per view event like a fight night. The players would have an incentive to participate if the league put the cash on the line. Its just a way to generate additional fan interest in the early part of the season when things are otherwise dead. Im sure it will be a bit more meaningful than the NBA All Star game. There is also a financial incentive for the participants: "The team that wins the tournament will be crowned with the NBA Cup. Each player on the winning team will take home $500,000; players on the second-place team will get $200,000 each; players on losing semi-finals teams will get $100,000 each; and the quarterfinalists will earn $50,000 per player." Its certainly not necessary but it does add to an additional point of interest to the season. So for what its worth you will now have the start of the season, the tournament, the trade deadline, the All Star game and finally the NBA Playoffs followed by the draft in June.

Sounds like the NBA is losing viewership so they’re introducing a circus appeal with a trip to Vegas, where they eventually plan to build a stadium and send a new expansion team. And make Mid-July Finals time that way all-year round people can watch sports without the Owners sacrificing that much profit either. ⚾️ April-October. 🏈 September-February. & 🏀December-July. That way the only dead month really is March and August. but NBA Allstar festivities would be in March and hopefully a 1v1 tournament. Winner gets a no-trade clause, automatic eligibility for a supermax contract, $10mil and make a deal to be on the cover of the 2K game/sports magazine or something. Something to super incentivise even the superstar players. Should be a requirement of being a starter or sixth man/most improved player past 5 years or avg like 25+ mpg. I'm not sure what it would be. and have different height classes like 6"4-below/PG or SG, 6"5-6"9/Guard-Forward, 6"10-above/PF or C

I think winner of the tournament should get home court if they make the playoffs regardless of record but still have to qualify for the playoffs Or winner get more extra balls during lottery pick

I would say more like the FA cup of the premier league or like supercopa of the liga. Champions league is more if European and South American teams joined the nba’s elite teams to determine the winner

@@JAPARICAN50-50exactly, and just like the FA cup, good teams will rest their starters in favor of giving bench players opportunities. This could be good since bench players usually have lower salary therefore they’d have an incentive to play harder and win. But that also means the quality of basketball you’re getting is not as good. Doesn’t really make sense imo but we’ll see how it works

People talking about injury, the tournament will have no difference than the regular season. They didn’t add the tournament they incorporated it. Everyone will still play just 82 then go to the playoffs, accept for the 2 teams that make it to the finals who will play 1 single game more (83 total now) on December 9th. Again only 2 teams receive 1 “extra” game each. And getting there makes 200k, win and everyone on the team gets 500k. Not bad, just wish it had more impact, either permanent minimum play in team, or maybe a guaranteed home court advantage through the playoffs (seeding be dammed).

I like that the nba is trying to change things up and keep things exciting but there needs to be a bigger reward like a +3games to your win total giving you a cushion to assure you make playoffs. Something more valuable than a trophy that doesn’t mean anything.

Honestly I think this is great it’s almost like a finals at the beginning of the season I understand it’s not as important but I genuinely want this to succeed the only thing bad I think is gonna come from it is injuries for sure 😅

@@rjjohn2241 Bud it is a good thing, take the biggest sport in the world by example, football, soccer for you guys. They play the league, cups and the best teams plays either champions, or libertadores, titles that are played by the best teams against the best in continent. They also play supercups, where the previuos winner from the league and cup, or european and south america super cups, where like, the previous winner from continent title first and second league, and other titles with their national team, Player can win multiple titles in their carrer, and players from smaller teams have a chance to compete for more than one title, thats is a great great thing, the only one league in american sport system is the only thing that ruins american sport system, because you guys have and amazing format of leagues and etc
