Barkley on the Bulls, Arin? *facepalm* Would have been cool to have seen Jordan and Barkley playing together, though! Fun fact, kids: even with all those amazing players on that original Olympic Dream Team (Jordan, Bird, Magic, etc), Sir Charles actually led the team in scoring, rebounds, and field goal percentage. People often forget how awesome that guy was.

The "Alley-oop" technique only became available in NBA Hang Time, along with an improved Turbo system, Double Dunks and "Team Fire". These made a return in the 7th gen system (X360/PS3) release of NBA Jam.

Being someone that's not into sports at all, I too never understood goaltending. I would think the entire point is to not let the other team get the ball into the basket. It seems to me that blocking the ball would be the thing you're SUPPOSED to do. If you can manage to get your hand high enough to block the ball from going into the basket, it should be allowed.

You're allowed to block the difference between blocking and goaltending is when in the ball's trajectory you stop the shot. Blocking is when you get a hand in on the ball on its ascent from the player's shot usually, right when the player just releases on it totally legal as it takes more skill to do. Goaltending however is when you interfere with the shot by touching it after the the peak/arc of the shot when it starts descending. This is illegal for the reasoning that it would be way too easy for any 6-7 foot guy to just stand in front of the hoop and swat a ball away on its way down.

Paul Kalafatis I guess that makes some sense, about the tall guy being able to knock the ball away easily.. but I dunno, it just seems to me that it should be allowed. I mean..the whole idea of it is to keep the ball from going in the net. That'd be like saying a goalie in soccer/football can't block the net if the ball is past a certain point.

no, its not the same. There is no goalie in basketball. In soccer there is a different set of rules for the goalie than there is for everyone else, ie: can use his hands, however not outside of the box. In basketball all of the players on the defensive end for an given play adhere to the same rules, even if some are better/taller. The reason its not allowed, and this is the most important part of this post, is because teams could just get a tall guy to stand at the rim with his hand in the basket to keep every shot out. To explain the rule more simply, after the ball leaves the hand, when the ball is going up its a block. When the ball is coming down its a goaltend.

Goal Tending is basically preventing the ball from going in the hoop when he had a wide open shot (or basically blocking the ball at the hoop instead of blocking it as the guy is taking the shot)
