This is how Madden has always worked for years. I taught my dad how to play Madden when Madden 15 came out and in his first two games he beat me twice. I was like I hate this fucking game.

They dropped the "Trolleys" from the name and just became the Dodgers. Then they moved to Los Angeles in the 50's and kept the Dodgers name.

I was wondering the whole time how the first football game went. It was probably a bunch of people blasted drunk sat down and planned out the silliest most overcomplicated thing they could. You know the usual rigamarole "We should make the ball not round, how wacky would that be!", "OOH! And name it 'football' but hardly ever kick the ball!" Then they each had a different version of the game when they were finished and compiled it into one game randomly.

QUEENDOM Its not the same for everyone. Most people don't feel the need to have knowledge on something they don't need to care about. I'm a geek but I grew up in the south so playing football was really the only way to make friends and now I'm very knowledgeable about football ironically because of that, even though I don't necessarily care about football.

QUEENDOM Being athletic and being into sports are not the same thing. Why is someone who doesn't like sports more likely to be a loser in your eyes? I lift, run and climb everyday. I just don't find traditional team sports entertaining. I think field and ice events move faster, are easier to understand and just a better viewing experience for me. But I find long involved games with a myriad of arbitrary rules are more engaging in a video game where I can participate.

QUEENDOM To be fair, while I'm an unathletic loser, I have nerdy friends who basically fit the stereotypical "socially awkward guy who hates and knows nothing about sports" while being able to do 30 one handed pullups. So there are ton of ripped nerds know just as much about sports as Arin.

BroadwayBrittany Basically, in real life football, this is normally considered a practically impossible situation since that's a lot of yardage to gain (anything over 10 is considered long) and failing to gain the necessary yardage gives the ball to the opponent while also giving them good field position. Normally, the offense would punt the ball to put the opposing team far away from the end zone to score, as to not take a gamble. But even if the team chose not to punt the ball away, a pass play is more effective since it's difficult to run the ball more than five yards in a single play, while passes can go for a considerable distance. Essentially, Arin running a run play at 4th and 22 and successfully gaining the yardage for a fresh set of downs is a slim to none chance

A coach calling that play in the NFL would be fired the next day no questions asked.

The only time that I can think of that a manual does nothing to help the player is Home Improvement (SNES). "Real men don't need instructions" or something to that effect but Tim Taylor (played by Tim Allen) constantly fails at doing his job consistently and competently. Experiencing a game, and researching a game are both valid choices and I would use both to gain any advantage I can over my player opponent or prepare myself for the game so as to not fail as much if at all. However, some games are better teachers when they kick your ass, and several times for that matter because knowledge of the game comes into play just as much as honing skill. Mega Man classic series, Ninja Gaiden, and Battletoads come to mind as strong examples.

You only control one player on your team, the one with the star. When you get the ball, you have 4 chances to move at least 10 yards, until eventually reaching the end zone and scoring 6 points. On fourth down, if you don't think you can get enough yards for a first down, you can decide to kick a field goal for 3 points (typically if the ball is at the opponent's 35 yard line or closer) or punt the ball and give possession to the other team. Should you score a touchdown, you have the option to kick an extra point or run one more play at the 2-yard line for a chance to score 2 points. When the Game Clock reaches 2:00 at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters, the clock automatically stops at the end of the play for a time out. Nowadays, there are a bunch of special rules that also go into effect, but they didn't exist back in 1994.

If you're not American, it's a little like rugby only you can throw it forwards if you're behind the line of scrimmage (where the ball starts). The coaches call plays where every player has a role to play. You can four "downs" (tries) to advance the ball ten yards (~9 meters) and get a new set of downs or score by reaching the end of the field. Play stops when a ball thrown forwards touches the ground, or if a player who caught or is carrying the ball is tackled or runs out of bounds. You can also kick the ball to the other team if you don't think you can get a new set of downs. If you reach the end zones, you (basically) get 7 points, but if you kick it through the yellow poles you get 3 points. If you're not trying to score, you're defending. Just like in soccer, the object on defense is to stop the other team from scoring and/or steal the ball. Just like any other sport, there's a ton of rules and regulations that I didn't mention. Admittedly seeing all the plays on a 20 year old console makes it look very complicated. The appeal of football is unique. There's an insane amount of strategy at play. Each down each turn chooses a play, so trying to outhink your opponent is a big part of it. At the player level, football accommodates a wide range of athletes. Big muscular guys can be linemen, skinny fast guys can be receivers, etc. Each player has to memorize the plays and the code from the coaches, too. There's a lot of room for smart but not super athletically gifted players to excel. Football is one of the most dramatic and exciting sports to watch. Unfortunately, it's also very controversial. Playing football is extremely damaging to the brain. The league is incredibly corrupt and, to be honest, racist. The effects of brain trauma really put me and others off the sport. It's actually worse for you than boxing. It's a very tragic sport because it's so amazing and so terrible at the same time. Hope that helps.
