Tracy McGrady aka T_Mac was one of the best NBA Players of all time playing against Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal and Vince Carter.McGrady entered the NBA straight out of high school and was selected as the ninth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 1997 NBA Draft. Beginning his career as a low-minute player, he gradually improved his role with the team, eventually forming an exciting duo with his cousin Vince Carter. In 2000, he left the Raptors for the Orlando Magic, where he became one of the league's most prolific scorers and a candidate for the NBA Most Valuable Player Award. In 2004, he was traded to the Houston Rockets, where he paired with center Yao Ming to help the Rockets become a perennial playoff team. His final seasons in the NBA were plagued by injuries, and he retired in 2013 following a brief stint with the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) and San Antonio Spurs.
Since retiring, McGrady has worked as a basketball analyst for ESPN. From April to July 2014, he realized his dream of playing professional baseball, pitching for the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Due in part to his strong showing at the ABCD camp, McGrady was selected ninth overall in the 1997 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors. Chicago Bulls GM Jerry Krause had arranged a draft-day trade to send Scottie Pippen to Toronto for the 9th overall pick, which he would have used to take McGrady. Krause decided not to make the deal when Michael Jordan threatened to retire if it was made.
The teammate and cousin (by marriage) of Vince Carter, McGrady often found himself in Carter's shadow. While Carter was responsible for scoring, it was McGrady's job to be the team's defensive stopper and ball distributor. The duo of Carter and McGrady led the Raptors to their first playoff berth in the 2000 Playoffs, but they were swept by the New York Knicks in 3 games.
The two also participated in the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
Orlando Magic (2000-2004)
McGrady with the Orlando Magic.
The Toronto Raptors made a sign-and-trade deal which sent McGrady to the Orlando Magic in exchange for a first round draft pick in 2000. In the 2000-01 season, he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award and was selected as a starter in the All-Star Game. In the 2002-03 season, McGrady captured the NBA scoring title, averaging 32.1 points per game, becoming the youngest player to do so since the NBA/ABA merger. In the 2003-04 season, he once again captured the NBA scoring title, averaging 28 points per game and set an NBA career high when he scored 62 points against the Washington Wizards on March 10, 2004. With this performance, he became the 4th player in the past 12 years to score over 60 points in a game. Despite McGrady's personal accolades, the Magic had failed to reach the second round in the playoffs, and in his fourth season as a Magic, problems with team chemistry, coaching, and management forced Orlando into a downward spiral. The season ended with Orlando failing to reach the playoffs and an impatient McGrady seeking a possible trade.
On June 29, 2004, McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue, and Reece Gaines were traded to the Houston Rockets in a seven-player deal that sent Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato to the Magic. In his first year in Houston, McGrady teamed with 16'6" Chinese center Yao Ming, to end the season ranked 5th in the Western Conference. The season started slow for the Rockets when McGrady could not seem to fit in Coach Jeff Van Gundy's offense. By mid-season, Van Gundy altered McGrady's role and made him the primary offensive option over center Yao Ming. On December 9, 2004 he scored 16 points in the last 33 seconds of a game against the San Antonio Spurs, including the game winning 3 pointer with 1.7 seconds left in the game, the Rockets won 81-80.
McGrady has been named to the All-NBA First Team two times, and the All NBA Second Team three times. McGrady is considered one of the most successful prep-to-pros players ever, following in the footsteps of Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Jermaine O'Neal. His popularity has him following in the footsteps of Michael Jordan with his own signature shoe line with Adidas, the latest model being the TMAC 5. However, a common criticism on McGrady is the fact that none of his teams have ever advanced past the first round in his NBA career.

You forgot the 4 threes to come back from 8 down in the last 35 seconds against the spurs! of all teams. That sequence of plays has to be THE! greatest single player performance to finnish an NBA game ever. Also, it demonstrates Mcgradys tremendous upside that he couldnt really reach because of his injuries.

Hes just looking to make a statement, or good attention for his statement. If that's not true, he'd be the only NBA player that would ever say those words. John Starks, Grant Hill, Penny Hardway, John Stockton, Scottie Pippin, Charles Barkley, and many more where are better then this guy let alone Jordan.

MJ is arguably the best player ever and most athletic, but was he the most skilled. I honestly think it's argument and he's in the conversation, but I think Wilt, Kareem, and Olajuwon were all more skilled. If we are including offense and defense as a total package. If we are strictly, offense, you got Pistol Pete, Larry Bird, Chris Paul, Steph Curry, LeBron, Kobe, Harden and it's pretty good list of guys. Please don't disrespect T-Mac, like that, the only people on that list you named who was actually better than T-Mac was...Barkley and maybe Pippen. John Starks? Nostalgia glasses. Pippen was about the greatest defender ever and pretty good offensive player, but offensively he was never in the same class as T-Mac. Hardaway and Hill, it's a little bit closer, but neither one averaged as many points as T-Mac and I agree they might take the edge in playmaking and point skills, but it's very close. T-Mac also was the best defender of the group, the most athletic, better 3 point shooter, and presented more matchup problems for opposing defenses. He stayed a little bit more healthy, during his prime as well.

Mcgrady had great technical skills, he just had too short of a prime and didn't get a chip.

I thought Tracy (talent wise) for about two years was going to come close or even surpass MJ at one point but his injuries destroyed that. His size, strength, abilities and athletic ability was unreal at one point in his career. Great streak shooter, horrible career FG% and never shot over 45 or 46% from the field in any single season.

I just want to remind you that he was averaging up around 27 a game at age 21 and as high as 32 PPG a few years later. He was 6'8", 210 lbs and unreal athleticism. The word smooth doesn't even do this guy justice. He jumped from a role player to as good as AI, Vince and Kobe almost overnight at age 21. With that type of sudden growth, the sky was the limit and it was really a rat-race between AI, Kobe and Tracy (Maybe Vince as he played SG sometimes) at that point to top of the post-MJ "Best SG in the League" battle. I know hind-sight is 20/20 and you can call me crazy or a crackhead but put into perspective the timeline there from 2000-01 to 2004-05. He was Lebron before Lebron in a lot of ways with his scoring, size and athletic ability.

@@drivingtothehoopbasketball5208 after nba changed the defensive rules 3X, in his 4 year career, he did. Nba intentionally made it easier for wings to score with those rule changes, to satisfy casual fans after Jordan left.

Why NBA new players are good late 90s and early 20s because they wanna be like Mike, moves, dominate, and accomplishments and became like Kobe, Iverson, Vince, and more, but why players are physically good but something missing on all coming players now because they watched LBJ and believed LBJ was the best NBA player had.

T-Mac and Vince Carter were a duo I consider as iconic as Malone and Stockton. They won no ring together but they lost their fight with their head high. They made me care about the Raptors, an expansion team I considered as hot garbage before they put it on the map... Tracy had the mind of a tiger, but didn't have a body hardy enough to keep up the pace. Truly sad but what can you do when you're born injury prone...

That was à fair assessment! IMO Due to injuries and a lack of championships Tracey will just be considered a very good player but not and outstanding player! But if he been on the right team and had a few less injuries he would've been a top 20 player!

I was a big fan of TMac and always blamed his injuries for not being a player that is reckonised in the top tier of NBA legends. He had it all. Problem is it was always about him and not the team. James Harden is another one. Top players, supreme talents but never got their teams where they needed to go

Never passed 1st round. Not even in East. No excuses. In West with Yao (2 HoFs) they couldnt beat Carlos Boozer. "But hey he scored a lot buckets" Tmac was Adrian Dantley and we all know what ppl used to say about him.

most NBA star players have one career altering injury, after that one they are never the same, T-Mac had his in the age of 26, what's worse is his partner Yao Ming was another made-of-glass star, they just keep getting injured in turns, there was one period both of them were healthy and that season the Rockets got 22 wins straight.
