Tony Snell has had a lot of success in his career. Then, last year at the age of 31, he was diagnosed with autism. Now for the first time, he’s sharing his story and opening up about the disorder with TODAY’s Craig Melvin.

I recall an interview Tony's college teammate Cam Bairstow gave when he was drafted the same year where he made a joke about how quiet Tony was in college. He said he was so quiet that if he actually spoke up his teammates would laugh and joke about it. I can only imagine this made him feel even more isolated and anxious. Very courageous to speak so openly.

As somebody with adhd I'm glad he's speaking up and encouraging others. that feeling of knowing you're different but appear that nothing is wrong can be hard. Every successful neurodivergent person is climbing that mountain and putting their flag in the ground showing how far they came

I found out as an adult too. Its almost a relief once you've thought you were possibly an alien because everyone reacts so poorly. People treat me with a lot more grace now than they did when I was just "weird" to them. Just having the label changes how I am treated so much

So crazy. I went through the same. I’m 31 now and my son got diagnosed last year. Now I’ve been diagnosed and my mom as well! It’s so crazy my mom is almost 70 years old and never knew ! I can honestly say if my mother would’ve known back then, alot of parts of our lives would’ve made sense. I’m really happy there’s more information nowadays because it really is important to understand your children or yourself at a young age

I didn’t get my diagnosis until I was 33, it made so much sense when I got my diagnosis. I always felt like an alien in a humans body. I don’t think people grasp how challenging it is to be on the spectrum. I dealt with bullying, insane amounts of awkwardness that made things so insanely hard, not being able to pick up on social ques that are fairly simple for everyone else, so many other things. I have to force myself to socialize so I can stay in a routine with it cause if I don’t i slip into the awkward silent nature I am naturally inclined to. Which is also not fun cause it causes a bit of discomfort having to do so. I’d prefer to stay in my man cave and play video games all day 😅. My daughter is showing some mild signs of being on the spectrum already. She will have a much better support system than I did.

It is so hard to have an adult tested. We realized our son was on the spectrum when he was 19. It actually made me cry when he said that if he had been diagnosed younger, he thinks he would have been limited. I had so much guilt for not knowing until later, but the truth is, no diagnosis was holding him back. He’s a very productive man now, and drives a truck for a living, as well as teaching new drivers how to drive.

Awesome stuff man! Congrats for getting your diagnosis and (I imagine) getting a lot of answers about your own life too! I'm curious for your opinion - Do you think Mitchell Robinson from the Knicks is on the spectrum? I've worked with people with ASD for 17 years and counting, and I love a number of people on the spectrum. Of course, I don't want to create a witch-hunt of armchair experts.... but I'm pretty certain he's on the spectrum too. Just watching interviews with him - he seems to show many different signs that makes me think that way.

I grew up mostly independent as well. I still have issues relating with people even as an adult. I am not officially diagnosed as yet, but there has been speculation from different mental health and educational professionals for years, since I was 12.

Tony always had the right mindset and that was to make it to the NBA. When he played for the Lobos, he was a very quiet person just like he mentioned. I remember going to a party where everyone was drinking and Tony was sitting on the couch with his headphones on not talking to anyone. It was super strange at the time so with this it totally makes sense.

I was diagnosed Bipolar II. Everything made sense when I got the diagnosis. Since then I had a doctor say I'm not Bipolar II. Either way, I know me and I know my struggles. I prefer doctors that listen.
