ASU says temporary housing is not new but, a year-over-year comparison shows a steady increase. That is due to the university's growing popularity, ASU is projecting a record enrollment this fall semester, with more than 15,000 first-year students on campus. The plan is to have two new dorms built as early as 2024.

Just curious why ASU is accepting dorm students when it doesn't have enough dorm space? Couldn't be because they are greedy.

i had to stay at a hotel for part of my freshmen year. while it was nicer as far as the bathroom, beds, etc, it made it harder and more inconvenient to get to classes. my hotel was “close” to campus but still far to walk. there was a bus, but the schedule was wacky for classes. it also wasn’t convenient as far as food and meal plans since my meal plans were for use at places on campus.

The University I went to only gives international students a priority for housing. Why? Because of the money. They dont care if you are a freshman or from Alaska. They will completely reject and make you find your own housing. It took me one month to find an apartment and it wasn't cheap, it costs a lot for a student, and finding other responsible students to pay bills on time is also a challenge.

If you can and want a campus experience, explore going abroad. It was less than $15k (US) a year to send my son to the UK for university. Wasn’t Oxford or Cambridge, but there are plenty of good smaller schools without the prestige price tag. The EU countries also have some of the same. And housing can be inexpensive if you look hard enough. Public transit is great for getting places. My son has had a wonderful international experience, meeting friends from many countries. Not a housing shortage, it’s a funding shortage. The federal government spends less and less on education, including public university dollars. So, increasingly universities must increase enrollment to make up for the shortfall. I don’t know much about forecasting budgets but my guess is these schools aren’t able to predict what funding they’ll receive with enough notice to build additional dormitories. Still, not a good way to operate a university. Also, tell your politicians to support education funding!

i was a freshman during covid so campus was basically empty that year, but this year compared to 2021, i have noticed that campus is just packed. there are people absolutely everywhere, and you can tell that this is the year everybody really is either coming back to campus or coming to campus for the first time. we are seriously overpopulated. the tempe campus alone has over 55,000 students, with 75,000 in person students total and over 130,000 enrolled in either in person or fully online degrees. asu not being able to house freshman when they come to campus is a huge issue, especially when our enrollment numbers are so high as it is. i get they send out so many acceptances to meet an enrollment quota, but they need to understand that it is really possible to exceed expectations, and accidentally take more students than you can handle. more and more students are choosing our programs because of our top business school, incredible research programs and opportunities, we are highly ranked in sustainability and #1 in innovation. asu is really making a name for themselves as a tier 1 research institution. phoenix offers great opportunities for those students as well, with the mayo clinic opening in scottsdale, as well as banner health, who hire college students as medical scribes all the time. we have a good tech industry who offer great internships, as well as we have a ton of sports (NHL, NBA, NFL, WNBA, MLB) and many opportunities for sports journalism and other sports related professions. asu isn't just the "shitty state school" anymore, and they need to realize that because accepting so many students is going to end up doing more harm than good if they keep having housing issues like they have over the last few years. as a student here, and as a tour guide, there is a lot more to be said than just the housing problem. this needs to be addressed and fixed before it gets worse. you might say this is overdramatic, but all problems like this start small and blow out of control.

The neighborhood near my college is so expensive where apartments go for $3000+/month for a single bedroom. Literally hundreds of students here got waitlisted for on campus housing and they told us only weeks before school starts that we should look for off campus places. Luckily I searched for off campus housing when it was a little cheaper early in the summer. My school also said that housing for 2nd years was guaranteed when we were first years and suddenly on their website said they were not offering that anymore. And for off campus apartments its incredibly hard to find a guarantor that makes enough so that your security deposit isn't 2 months worth of rent which many college students can not afford.

It's because theyve quickly increased class sizes but not hired enough teachers and dorm building because the first requires paying teachers and second requires a few months of construction of wait more costs for universities

Housing is always difficult for freshmen because seniors and juniors get first dibs on dorm rooms…followed by sophomores…at least that’s how it worked at my school

As far as dorms are concerned, a hotel is better. I understand its not the freshman experience many kids dream of, but it's not the end of the world. I started school during covid and it was weird but it was what it was and we all moved on.

It should be illegal to require freshman to live on campus, this is just one example why. My friend was required to when her parents lived walking distance away from campus. It's extortionary. I literally waited to go to asu until I was "too old for dorms" - what they literally told me. I was 19 at the time and just got an apartment with people on an on campus roommate finding board.

@@Plasticsoldier64 No, in fact i got in an argument with a guard at a casino last night cuz i didnt have an ID and im 27 now. im like dude i dont look like a kid. Those 19 year olds in dorms today were in dorms at 18. they kick you out at 20, right before you can buy beer. But if you dont start at 18, you're too old to start living in dorms after that

That's OK. Plenty will drop out fairly soon. I'm wondering why y'all aren't choosing colleges overseas? Many, many countries provide a far better education than the US and you'd have a greater experience. Not to mention you'd have a much greater chance of not getting shooters.
