I "invented" my own scale about a year ago. Turns out it's a Locrian scale with a couple passing notes. I (of course) had no clue, LOL. My guitar teacher identified it in seconds...but *I still invented my own scale* dagnabit 😠🏴‍☠️☠️

Man I've been trying to learn guitar for years but I keep losing motivation and giving up so now I've decided instead of starting out with all the stuff they recommend like barre chords and open shapes I'm gonna learn to do what I started playing to do and shred. Once I can shred over some basic chord progressions with a fair few scales then I'll have built a foundation of knowledge. So when I go to learn the other stuff, which I will do, and I get frustrated, which I will do, I'll always have that foundation to fall back on and stay motivated. Don't get me wrong I think people should absolutely learn how to do as much on the guitar as possible and experiment in other genres but if everyone built that foundation of stuff they love first then I think a lot less people would quit.

In my limited knowledge, I'd opine that it's lots of open E (or down-tunings of open E) with whole step or chromatic modulations. With a smattering of melody, harmony and diatonic stuff. Edit: The point being that the scale is less important, even though some are quite common. Unless I'm just talking crazy talk.

Great lessons Scott, what has helped me a lot is listening to all the Castlevania video game music. From the old melodies to the newest ones, now I can understand that the made a whole cool song with a 1 minute loop over just one chord. Some songs have orchestra now, but some are very simple and sound like Bach or Vivaldi. Thanks for the video.

I must say that you Rock! I'm the drummer of the disbanded "Psychosis " (Massacre Records) with no way to let loose where I live, so I'm shreading on my brother's Squire affinity. I hung out with my guitar players back in the day (like when Rising force/ marching out was shining and new) and bothered them until they showed me some Yngwie licks that I absolutely had to know. I never learned an entire song, only some cool intros and scales. As a tone deaf drummer I was showing off to a new bass player that I could play guitar and he took my left hand as I was playing and moved it up a half step and all of a sudden it sounded good!

I find my self using the pattern the scales make more than remembering the scale letter by letter. The shape. I suppose some call it the caged system. But you can make a hell of a lot of time riffs that sounds good even if you just memorize the shape of scales and to me makes it more accessible because you’re not thinking where the notes are. Especially helps writing black metal. And even other music like punk and oi. Even find my self using it to make hardcore music.

One could go so far as to name the most prevalent scale in each of the sub genres of Metal. I.e. the Phrygian Dominant in Neoclassical metal. I'd guess that in Pop Metal, Dorian would be most popular. However, I'd have to say that the most common scale used in Metal as a singular genre would be the Natural Minor/Aeolian.

RE: YT being squirrely with the community comments. I am GUESSING that they are playing with the user interface. I noticed that the UI got more complex a week or 2 ago. little thumbvids of a couple frames on video thumbnail mouseovers appeared, the UI would stall due to an endless script which would have to be cancelled, general slowdown like when game devs just load an insane amount of effect graphics and the whole thing runs slower. The endless scripts seem to be gone now, so things seem to be changing. I see only your "WTF is going on here" comment and my 2 comments in the community post..btw, carlos santana or possibly angel Vivaldi. he is really creative.

well since you say your a newbie, here something thatll blow your mind the phrygian dominant scale is the exact same scale as the harmonic minor, just starting on the 5th note of harmonic minor, so instead of thinking of them as 2 different scales, think of them as the same scale but different shapes . so if you want that sound you have 2 scale shapes to use. so lets say im in A harmonic minor, the notes are A,B,C,D,E,F,G# so the 5th note is E. so take the phrygian dominant shape from this video and start in on the 12th fret of the 6th string(the E note) and boom you have 2 shapes of the same scale to play in.

Is the scale shape more important or the names of the notes you’re actually playing? I’ve been on this like kick lately of knowing the notes and then using that to play the modes in any key and pushing myself to find them anywhere. It helps me out quite a bit when I freestyle to jam tracks actually believe it or not. Maybe each player is different? Also what I liked about Dimebag’s solo in walk was the legato riff towards the very beginning because it’s all the minor blues scale in almost “e flat” I believe... those tunings had to have been inspired by randy rhoads.
@penttikoivuniemi2146
@penttikoivuniemi2146 4 года назад
The important thing is knowing what you're doing, how you categorize your actions in your head doesn't really matter that much. I know a guy who teaches music and he thinks about the note names when he's playing, another guitarist who thinks about the frets, and a professional gigging guitarist who mostly just finds a good scale he can play over the entire chord progression and just lets rip without thinking that much. I myself mostly just think about the intervals in relation to the chord playing at the moment, or when I get lost I center myself around the scale until I figure out which chord is playing again.

Mr Spacetime I think I’m in your boat. I like knowing what notes I want to play to find the shape of e Phrygian for example without having to stop and google it and that way I’ll eventually remember that shape and how it looks on the fretboard. But I don’t sit there and think about each one as I play them. Especially freestyling I want to know where to play based on the key I’m in so I can find those shapes faster. But I base those decisions on the minor and major blues/pentatonic and major 1st positions mostly but don’t play only those positions either, they’re just good for reference

I've been playing since 1980, and what I find listening to my favorite players solos (Andy Larocque for example), is I find certain notes, or groups of notes stick out to me more so than taking the solo as a whole. Listen to some of your favorite solos and you probably will find the yourself doing the same thing too (where have I heard that before?) Regards 🎸
