I watched a regular interview after watching a bunch of Sam's interviews, and it was immediate the disconnect of most interviewers just ready to ask a list of questions while having no connection with the person they are interviewing. Sam has such empathy, such connection, that he can have real, meaningful and deep conversations that we are lucky enough to be able to view and learn from.

Exactly. He asks them good questions about themselves and not about a role that they are promoting. He lets them talk, and he gets this great content.

It's funny that so many actors either have much deeper or much higher voices in real life than the characters they portray. It's a mix is audio mixing and of course just playing the character

I think it's something about the way they mic them. There are other interview subjects who have an unnatural amount of bass. I think it sounds great, though.

I think there are two more parts to the analogy: skill and luck. As in surfing, you need to develop your craft to be able to take advantage of the opportunities that come along. Also, you often need to be in the right place at the right time.

I like how well-spoken he is. "I think the immediacy of fame, although it is an opiate, is certainly double-edged." There are not many who can formulate sentences like that on the spot, just having a conversation.

@Harry Baals Nah, I'm good, thanks. :-b Really, intelligence doesn't come into it that much. My point was more about reflection, the ability to take a step back from one's own situation and put it into simple, but effective words - that elusive thing that enables some people to do more than just formulating a sentence of more than seven words without an unhappy accident along the way. I work with extremely intelligent people every day, but many of them still struggle to bring their point across a lot of the time, if only because there's so much on their minds and nothing is really simple and clear-cut to them.

"The goal was to be patient enough to value that metaphor" is a beautiful way of putting it - it's not your approach that has to change (you can't beat the waves), but your character. You have to understand what the reality is, not the fantasy, and reconcile yourself to a different sort of beauty. Which applies to life in general.

I always love watching NPH...my favorite though is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog which isn't even a well-known show. Not everyone has the range to play a great, complex anti-hero. Plus he gets to showcase his singing ability too:) Also love the surfing analogy...when you're young and you miss a wave you think it's the end of the world. True, the exact same wave will never come again, but life always has opportunities if you're willing to get back up and keep trying.

This is really helpful actually.....holy crap. I'm hoping to get into the industry but I'm still working my skills and I'm not putting myself out there yet. I'm starting with practicing lines from My favorite shows and studying mannerisms while trying to put myself out there. It kinda sucks cause my parents are very much not letting me get out into the world which is nessacary for this kind of thing. But back to the metaphor I'm definitely going to use that ideology in my thinking now!😌 sorry for the long speech I'm done now
