We’ve all heard of the nepo baby. But nepotism doesn’t always flow from parent to child. There are many famous people who carved their careers out of a connection to someone else - there are nepo parents, nepo partners, even nepo friends. It’s been argued that Paris Hilton gave her assistant Kim Kardashian her first foray into fame and that Taylor Swift is responsible for putting ex-boyfriend Joe Alwyn on the up-and-up. But while we’re quick to point out what looks like nepotism, are we forgetting about the importance of collaboration, and the inspiration that creators derive from their close ones?

Helena Bonham Carter was not Tim Burton’s nepo spouse. She was a highly respected actress since her breakthrough role in Lady Jane in 1986. She was Oscar nominated in 1997 - 4 years before she met Tim in 2001 starring in Planet of the Apes

I cannot believe you listed Helena Bonham Carter as a possible example of a "nepo relationship." That is ludicrous as well as insulting to Helena. She has been a successful and critically acclaimed actress since she was in her teens, and has received multiple acting awards, many for projects that had nothing to do with Burton, or even predate her relationship with him. This includes her Oscar nominations: one predates her relationship with Burton, (The Wings of the Dove), and one is for a project that didn't involve him (The King's Speech), Associating her with folks such as Hailey Bieber is just beyond shallow. Frankly, I think that any Burton projects that Bonham-Carter participated in elevated them, because even if he is the director, hers is the superior talent. Since their break-up not only has she continued to work, but her work has showcased her depth and versatility as an actor. This entire video is shallow and reductive, but using Helena as an example is simply beyond the pale.
@freyja6360
@freyja6360 Год назад
She was "successful and critically acclaimed as a teen" because she was already a nepo BABY. If it's problematic in the US then in UK it's simply shameless. Look up British actors and count the percentage of "upper class" people or people already connected in the film industry. I agree with you though that nepo partner was used incorrectly here - they were in similar positions in their lives and careers at that point.

You can be a nepo baby and have real, genuine, incredible talent. One does not negate the other
@kt_jpg
@kt_jpg Год назад
Being a nepotism baby doesn't mean you don't have talent it's saying that you had industry privileges and connections that your peers did not. It's literally the definition. People can be talented and still benefit from nepotism, it's mostly problematic when people don't acknowledge their advantages
@marshatolbert154
@marshatolbert154 Год назад
@@freyja6360 Totally agree that Helena started out with an insane amount of privilege. Nevertheless, for this video to even vaguely imply that her career was dependent on Burton is just next level absurd. How do these producers manage to get paid for this drivel? 🤦‍♀️
@jenm3056
@jenm3056 Год назад
@marshatolbert154 I am with you, I followed Helena's work way before the union with Burton which I personally think was a nosedive in quality roles for a strange cosplay to his vision. I do agree with the other posters noting that she is Nepo based on family (she interacted with Princess Margaret BEFORE the Crown bc of her family) but the Burton relationship is a terrible example in this video essay and further insulting when you get the Rowland/Cassevetes examples (who I LOVE0) but I'm sure Helena would see herself more in that camp than the Beiber/Baldwin scene, hehe, Edited for PS: This is another example of this channel's "age" bias----alot of the bigger statements and comparisons reveal the age of the creators and clearly a lack of a deep cultural lens older than millennials in the brainstorm room. All for young content but they trip themselves up often with the more totalizing comparisons due to an artificial timeline.

I appreciate the mention that marrying into nepotism is nothing new. The first example I thought of was Catherine the Great; through a combination of political alliance and sheer gumption, she went from a minor German princess to ruling Russia in her own right. She was also much smarter and savvier than her husband, and even though she usurped (and possibly murdered) him to gain power, her reign was truly a remarkable one.

I think the real problem us frustration over the unfair system that allows certain people the opportunity to be creatives but not others. I mean, think about how many creative and talented people are from the low income neighborhoods of Baltimore city alone, do they have the same opportunities as these people? How much art are we missing out because they're not wealthy, famous, or connected. I know for my generation we were told that this is a meritocracy, that anyone can make it if they work hard enough, when reality does not match the narrative we became disillusioned and frustrated. Sure a lot of these people are talented and deserve the recognition, but it wasn't their talent that allowed them the opportunities they have, meanwhile so many others are stuck just trying to get through each day without losing their overpriced apartment, that's the crux of the issue.

I'm not buying the whole "muse" explanation. While it was probably true to some of the actor-director duos, the term quickly became overused and abused by the directors. Many of those "muses" weren't treated very well in those relationships. That being said, I think that nepo babies are much worse than nepo partners. I mean, you can't help who you love and if ithere's an economical imbalance, it's natural for that "nepo partner" to do everything that's possible for them to not feel worse, level the field. That's human and a way to protect themselves in case they split up. Saying that nepo babies "can't help in what family they were born" is just dumbing down the real issue. They are born with every possibility accessible to them. How many are there the ones who chose to pursue education in any kind of science or anything else that's actually productive and beneficial to the society and the world? Do we really need that many actors/singers/influencers? Problem is that other things would require much more effort.

Hold up bro. A friend of mine went to high school in Beverley hills with a lot of these celebrity kids and the majority of them went on to be doctors, lawyers, work in finance, and have normal careers outside of the entertainment industry. They’re just not famous because ya know they’re normal people and they don’t like flaunting their famous parents around (and their parents protect their privacy because they’re not public figures). You’re just being hyperbolic because the famous nepo babies are the ones who stand out but think of how many celebrities there are and how many of their kids there are and how many of those kids are actually famous.
@availanila

The most cringe worthy use of the idea of the muse was with Seth MacFarlane and that girl that played Alara and the one that played the annoying gay girl in The Orville. It had such a predatory energy to it, I couldn't help but cringe whenever any of the girls talked about him or him them. I remember realizing I wasn't the only one feeling it when I saw the "replacement Alara" actress cringe when the annoying lesbian character's actress talked about "her's and Seth's method." NB: I don't know their names, I don't mean to sound so rude about it.

@@ayameisastar Why are you calling me "bro"? Yeah, yeah... A friend has been places and has seen shit😂... It's a shame that they haven't taught you how to spell "Beverly Hills". I'm sure that some of them have decent jobs. What's funny is that you still failed to mention scientists and I've asked mainly about that. BH is not only full of celebrities but also kids of rich doctors, lawyers and financiers. Imagine that they go to schools there as well and yeah, they're choosing "nepo careers" too. Arguably, with the resources they had from the start, they should've been well-known in their fields and not no-names. Why are you assuming that I've heard only about celebrities? Give me a few examples if it's a "majority" of people. Parents still brag about their children's success so their names and professions are usually a public knowledge, it's XXI century - complete privacy doesn't exist. If you think that it's the minority I'm talking about, then that minority takes an awful lot of space and that isn't cool either. It's not only about "all the children of celebrities". It's about the fact that arts are still exclusive and closed-off to people outside Los Angeles and maybe New York. If that "minority" takes most of the industry, then that industry is sick and needs some changes.

Being a muse has nothing to do with the health or lack of health of a relationship. A muse is just someone who inspires you to create and in the Nick Cassavetes and Tim Burton cases Idk why you cannot process the fact that if the role was inspired, it makes sense that success hinges on you playing it. Also, the vast majority of celebrity kids don’t end up celebrities themselves. Plain logic would tell you that much.
@freyja6360
@freyja6360 Год назад
@@jakestroll6518 Thank you for the explanation, I wouldn't knew that without you🙄🤦‍♀️. If you're a creative person working in arts and you can only find inspiration in the one person you're currently sleeping with then first of all - you're putting too much pressure on the relationship which is unfair to the other person who probably feels pressure to be inspiring to you or else. It has an expiration date from the start and it's more of a business deal than a relationship. Besides that, if that's the only thing that inspires you to that extent, you're probably not the best one to do this job since inspiration can be found everywhere. All I was saying that it was overused and specifically by men. I've never seen a female director calling her partner/husband "their muse", so it's clearly not needed in this profession. I've said it already but I'll say it again since you clearly have problems with comprehension. It's not about ALL celebrity kids being celebrities. It's about the fact that nearly all of the people in showbusiness are the children of celebrities or millionaires.

@2:11 with HBCarter she comes from a wealthy family and got roles in her teens. She went to St Pauls a top private school and was head girl there.. She was successful way before she met Tim Burton tbf to her. Hailey Beiber became an IT girl/influencer due to her Baldwin connections and she is friends with Kendall Jenner this was way before she met Justin.

Labels seem to be a good thing, but Labels also seem to be used as a bad thing. That is all I'm noticing with all these names we call things. LGBT"AlphabetSoup"/Nepo/Gender/Boomber/Milenial... if it gets a label, it gets roasted... Things just are my people... things just are... who cares at the end of your life... think about the moment you will be lying down dying and wonder, will I give 2 faqs about anything but the people you love?

There's no Joe is William Bowery. Lots of details don't check out. In interviews Joe mentions being a terrible singer. There is no evidence of him being able to play piano - something an actor would advertise as its a skill that adds to their repertoire. William Bowery is also listed as an american citizen...which joe is not

Honestly, marriage is so miserable, if it helps someone become successful, they earned it.

All this "nepo" judgements... that's just people being jealous of other who are richer or more famous thatn they are. And they are looking for a reason why the other people are rich/famous and they themselves are not.

Another way to look at it is frustration that actual talent and hard work are overlooked in favor of nepotism. Imagine you were dedicated and excelled at your job and the boss just promoted his mediocre son or daughter over you.

I do not get why people are so pressed that strangers be marrying into rich or well known families, when the popularization of marriage in the olden days was just that. Marrying to have a better life. Some marry for their families and not even for themselves. The real question is why do people care so much about how another person makes their living? Because they don't think they deserve it? Come on! This is the age old argument from the poor complaining about the rich. People should stop worrying about who's connected to who and just focus on their own lives and careers. Abolishing rich people's inheritances isn't going to make you rich. That money will never reach you either way. So complaining about opportunities and fortunes that don't belong to you instead of focusing on how you can build your own career and comforts is just unproductive. Sheesh.

4:07 - 4:21 love and support?! You can get that from anyone! No offense to the person who’s from the bottom or of lesser means in the relationship…but that doesn’t give them much defense! You can get love and support from any genuine well functioning human being who’s there for you. That doesn’t take away the fact that their benefiting from being the significant other of someone rich/famous. So no offense , love and support is not some rare quality. Nothing wrong with being with someone of means, but don’t ever form your lips to say you work for everything. Even your partner knows deep down that’s lie. Pissed them off one day bad enough and they’ll put you in your place to let you know that.
