I am glad that I embraced yoga a couple of years ago. It has completely changed my nervous system. I grew up in a very emotionally unhealthy, angry and chaotic home where I was made to feel unwanted and unloved. This resulted in depression and anxiety. I never truly felt calm for long periods of time. I had learnt to anticipate the worst and to protect myself from it as a kid to survive. Yoga (along with a few lifestyle changes) has tremendously benefited me and has calmed my nervous system. I never experienced the Zen I get to enjoy now. My depressive episodes have drastically reduced and my anxiety is not as frequent and problematic either. Anyone whose grown up in an unhealthy and abusive environment and feels that they are stuck with feeling broken and experiencing pain, things can improve massively for you. Don't give up hope and be kind to yourself as much as you can.

May I ask what changes in addition to yoga you made? I really resonate with your message.

@@MadameSarah Sure. I am not an expert but I'll mention what works for me. One of the biggest obstacles for me and a lot of people with childhood trauma is that we think we don't deserve love because if we did, our parents who're biologically meant to love us would not make us feel unwanted. I was taught to be kind to others but not myself. To counter that is a slow process where you become conscious of your internal monologue and try to be kinder in your self assessments. Those who have grown up among overly judgemental people turn out to be even more brutal to themselves. Recognizing and slowly changing that cycle of self sabotage helps. I also decided to do certain things that were out of my comfort zone because depression made me completely demotivated. It doesn't have to be something big but depression makes us tired and demotivated to do things that might otherwise be fun like making plans with someone, traveling, exploring some new restaurant, spending time in nature. I slowly pushed myself to get out of my bubble of comfort. It was not too much where I would get burdened. Reading is one of the biggest influences in my life. In many ways it has saved my life. It's a safe space for me. I make it a point to do little things like reading with a cup of tea everyday, taking a walk in nature or listening to music to calm myself. Reading before bedtime can be calming to a lot of people. Taking out the time to do what you love every day helps a lot. I have a gratitude journal. It's about everything I am grateful about. It can be anything that makes you happy and smile. From your first sip of coffee in the morning to the affection of a pet. It helps remind us of the small moments of beauty in our lives. Also the more we focus on positive things, the more our mind thinks positive thoughts. Even this channel has amazing videos describing this in detail. Similarly, I learnt that fighting bad memories only makes them stick harder so I routinely try to remember good ones. If you have anxiety, try focussing on your breath. Most of us tend to breathe from the chest. Our breathing is usually quick and shallow. Take a few minutes daily to breathe slowly from your belly. You'll feel calmer and more relaxed. I hope it helps :)

Sadly at 54 I’ve learned too many in world grew up in dysfunctional and unhealthy homes incl some form of abuse or trauma to varying degrees and severity. Can be generational as victims create victims and hurt people hurt people and or cultural/geographical. I’d guess the issue in this video is prob a global epidemic now. TY for sharing.

Boy do I have this! Whenever I experience a highly stressful situation the next day I feel so depressed, weepy, and anxious with rumination. I’ve had a lot of therapy and realize this is a trauma response and I need to separate myself from the feeling and ask myself what type of self care would be helpful. This usually looks like a long walk or making my bed and sticking to my routine. Nice short btw!

Had this happen to me at work last week. Was under a lot of pressure. When the pressure ended I was totally wiped out. I struggled to eat dinner with my family and went straight to bed. The next day and a half at work I was hardly functional. I basically did what I had to do, to get through the day. I did have a long chat with my therapist about it this week.

Great question- it's definitely a cycle, the mind and body play off of each other, working on either the mind side or the body side can be helpful.

Thank you for this video. I find it very valuable. I hope motherhood is going swimmingly well for you as a new mommy of a beautiful baby girl. I have a question; when the nervous system is in disregulation and it's caused from fight or flight from cortisol and adrenaline from physical pain? Physical pain in both legs stemming from a chronic condition (severe osteoarthritis) not ever expected to improve. How do you regulate your nervous system in these circumstances? I do not want to do any medical intervention as all the options are very invasive. I also refuse to take opiates. Thank you so much in advance if you are able to address this question!

TY good video. Tied into nervous system hyper sensitivity w/chronic pain? Also I’m prob older then avg viewer but can post retirement from demanding career incl sml biz owner @60-80 hrs per wk min for 15-20 yrs lead to NSD? Being a mom and biz owner I’m sure you know w/mult clients to keep happy + staff you’re ‘on’ 24/7 even on vacation and ‘sick days.’ Can this lead to longterm NSD down mode/low motivation in retirement or 2nd career? My new biz is far easier by choice incl no staff and I love it but crash 1-2x per wk and lost motivation from first biz. Maybe age too.

Yes, and unfortunately many will blame themselves when they crash and believe that they should be able to get out of that state by using a mind approach - it's not you, it's your dysregulated nervous system. Heart video🙏🏼🤍
