1:55 Not likely an artifact of the developers. Most NES games only needed a single byte of information to store sprite transformations (i.e. palette select, horizontal/vertical flip), so really it's pretty simple to make a code which somehow attacks this one byte and reverses the transformations being stored. Or even find the routine that sets up the sprite and mess with it there. Whatever works.

I had an NES 16 years ago and a Game Genie with it. I tried experimenting with different codes but my biggest success was with the pinball game High Speed. What I did was make a code that made the extra ball light lit up at the very beginning. It was lit up at the game start and when you lost the ball and restarted with the second, third, 4th and so on and so forth.
I do not remember. It was years ago. All I remember was the code was 6 characters by default. Once you put in the 6th character, it goes to the next line
I live in MI...back when this first came out it was actually banned in the US...Nintendo tried to block it. So on a family trip to Canada, I got my parents to buy it for me. I brought the code book (the original was blue/purpleish) to school the following week and I was the coolest guy in school for like 15 minutes since I had this outlawed Nintendo magic cheating device. I think it showed up in the US the following year.

Snake Rattle & Roll would make up some crazy levels if you played around with the level select codes. Damn, it's years since I played that criminally underrated game.
I remember using the level select codes for Snake Rattle & Roll on the NES as a kid... I changed a letter or two and the results were amazing, I used to think the game had 100 levels when it in fact only had eight! None of the other games I owned seemed to work so well with game genie custom codes.

There actually was a neat version of a cheat module for the SNES that had a "cheat finder" build in, when playing the game you could make it scan through different values and then mess with them. For example, in terranigma you could get infinite magirocks by letting it scan for a value you currently have, collect one in game and then let it scan again for values that have risen. It's still a trial and error process but allowed you to find codes, kinda like CheatEngine nowadays.
Oh man, I LOVED my Game Genie when I was a little tike. My book is in a million pieces now, but I still have it... ! My dad tried to order the second edition of the book for us (twice!). Galoob totally cashed his cheque twice, but the book never came.....
@rinrygamegame It IS Bomberman! At the end of Bomberman, you become the Lode Runner guy. Then, I guess, the other Bombermans try to capture the Lode Runner.
Cutest voice ever. Ahh the game genie. I Remember cheating myself a hammer bros suit and allowing myself to do the spin jump myself into hovering in super mario 3.
You can hook up multiple NES Game Genies together and put in more codes. I owned three. :D This also works with the Sega Genesis version. It may work with the SNES one too though you might have to trim the plastic on the lower one, because of the odd shape of it.
Great Game Genie review, rinrygamegame! I jut love this device hehe :). Back in 2001 I found a website that said that it was possible to create your own codes by typing in random letters. After a lot of trial and error I came up with some pretty cool stuff! My favorite codes that I managed to create are: PTTXXX for Double Dragon (NES), Sucks to be You! ISITYU for the Punisher (NES), The Boss code! YATZEY for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES), Mike Tyson's Black-Out!
As I had to have had this Gamegenie sung to Billy Bayoya games, Dragon spirit (but this game never took codes), Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Megaman, and Werewolf, those were the most difficult games in my Children, lol xD
I really enjoyed the video. I remember figuring out a bunch of NES Game genie codes when I was a kid, I have no idea how. I suppose I had too much time on my hands...
this thing was amazing and made it possible to beat some of the harder games i sucked at. i dont mind cheating if it means i can actually finish a game i suck at
