The 8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System was released 30 years ago in North America, bringing the Famicom game console outside of Japan for the first time.
We detail the differences and similarities between the NES and Family Computer, and talk about things you might not have known about for the last three decades!
(Can you believe we never covered the NES directly before? Neither can we!)

The "AC power" image flipping was way funnier than it should have been. Also, the expansion port was designed entirely with the Disk System in mind which is why it has exactly 10 pins that match up with the unused middle pins on the NES cart connector. There would have been an NES RAM Adapter with the 2C33 chip in it, and those 10 pins would carry all of the signals in the RAM adapter's cable (except power and ground) as well as the audio.

Awesome video! I never knew about the expansion port through the player two port! IT ALL MAKES SO MUCH SENSE NOW! Thanks guys!

+tylerjameslucas the rest of the expansion port pins (as well as the 2 that the zapper/powerpad/etc. use) are on the bottom expansion port as well.

Gets even more complicated for PAL versions of the NES.

Famicom Dojo Well I mention it in my "British NES Ports video" but essentially there's two NES systems in Europe, the Mattel model and the Nintendo made NES model. Mattel models only work on PAL B games, where as Nintendo ones work on both PAL A and B. Mattel were essentially dicks when they made the NES and made regioning ultra restrictive and the games ultra expensive. (so paying $140 in 80s money for a game was not out of the norm here)

Of course as a vet of Famicom World, I've known all this stuff since about 2005, but even so it's nice to see documented in video format. Good job guys! Although I would suggest really stressing the NES AC Power Supply vs Famicom DC Power Supply. I know you addressed it ina denshimail, but it's always good to heavily remind people not to use the NES-001 power supply with......ANYTHING else. It's incredibly sad whenever I hear about someone who imported a Famicom or PC Engine or Super Famicom from Japan and then tried using an NES AC adapter with it.

I believe we addressed it in theater Famicom-specific video earlier this year. I didn't want to go too far into the weeds with this once, since we mentioned it recently.

+That's Orange I can totally understand that Sean. My recommendation stems from personal experience when you're trying to educate the public on an important topic. I've found that no matter how little sense it makes to you as the content creator, there will be people who watch this and not the others and will not truly grasp the importance of not using an NES power supply with a Famicom. Therefore, repetition and elaboration of the NES power supply is something you should do not just once or twice, but pretty much anytime you're discussing system hardware ever. You get it, I get it. but don't assume random first time viewer will get it. Just my PSA to help save Famicoms from meeting a terrible fate.

I like the front loading of the NES and I think I prefer the bigger western cartridges.. Maybe I just liked the grey uniformity. There are too many colours here in Japan!

Isn’t it? We felt like we had to condense a lot of what we’d released on the subject over the years, but also fulfill the promise from Season 1 that we’d finally cover it

Did the NES 2 overcome the connector issue?
@FamicomDojo
@FamicomDojo 8 лет назад
+Stephen Ney The NES 2 does not have a 10NES chip.
@Greenhooves
@Greenhooves 8 лет назад
+Famicom Dojo I meant the issue referred to at around the 5 minute mark. the pins that would lose their spring or erode or get dirty.
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 8 лет назад
+Stephen Ney Oh sure. The top-loader is just a straight-up slot like the Famicom's. The main issue with the front-loader is touchy communication with the 10NES chip, however.

Isn't it somewhat debated whether or not Super Mario was actually a launch title or a slightly later release?
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 8 лет назад
Well, even the NES launch date itself is kind more of a date range, because it wasn't widely available until 1986.
@MarkNESStarFox

Why is the video flickering around 1:18?
@darkarchon
@darkarchon 8 лет назад
+MarkNESStarFox Because "AC" stands for "alternating current". So I guess the picture alternates... as a pun.

@FamicomDojo
@FamicomDojo 8 лет назад
+MarkNESStarFox It's a rendering error. Weirdly, fixing it caused other rendering errors. After a few hours of trying, and having the random errors pop up, we're just gonna call this good, and try to fix it later for the (eventual) disc release.

Why can't you blow in the NES Cartridge?
@SeanOrange
@SeanOrange 5 лет назад
ShortShaker It’s more “shouldn’t” than “can’t”. It might seem to work for a little while, but it probably wasn’t the blowing that made things work so much as reseating the cartridge. Any immediate benefit blowing may have had could possibly also be due to saliva deposited on the contacts to make the connection. Over time, this will not only corrode the game’s contacts, but the console’s as well. We did a whole video about how to lean your games properly: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dg1S3Z8hOgw.html
