NES VS Famicom Disk System - 5 Import Games with Better Audio!

In this episode, we compare and contrast the audio quality of the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Famicom Disk System and rank my five favorite Famicom Disk System games from an audio standpoint.
One of my favorite things about the Famicom Disk System is the enhanced audio native to it. Games sound so much richer, so much deeper, it's almost like a completely different system. While there were intentions to add expansion audio to the NES in the USA and Europe, it never happened. As such, those enhanced audio versions were forever locked away. I have played many games through my FDS, and these are my favorite games with enhanced audio.
Testing: For the most part, I have connected my Famicom Disk System to my HDMI Modded NES with a 60-to-72 pin adapter. I did have some games that would not play through my FDS, so for those I used my Sharp Famicom Turbo Twin via composite connectors to my RetroTink5x set to 1080P output.
5 - Kid Icarus
Starting out a game that has more subtle enhanced audio, Kid Icarus tweaks the theme music, the death music, and some of the sound effects by taking advantage of the additional channels that the Famicom offers. Unlike some of the other games we will feature where the difference is night and day, this is definitely more subtle. Perhaps if I enjoyed Kid Icarus more I would rank this game higher as well, but as it is, it's a pretty decent start.
4 - Castlevania 2: Simon's quest
While it may be a terrible night for a curse, it's a wonderful game to hear expansion audio. The main music is so much richer and deeper in Simon's Quest, and once you get out of the town and get to fighting enemies the enhanced audio really shines. From killing enemies, and picking up weapons, to just the background music, Simon's Quest is an example of what the Famicom could do from an audio standpoint, and it's marvelous.
3 - Metroid
Metroid suffers a similar fate as Kid Icarus, where if I was a bigger fan of the game I might rank it higher. The foreboding tones that have been added to the theme music, the overall richness that the Famicom Disk System version gets, it's all so much better than what we got with the NES. One of the more subtle effects that really stands out to me is when you open a door, the Famicom Disk System version just sounds more substantial than what the NES version did. Another benefit of the FDS version is the fact that you no longer have to remember your passwords, your progress is saved right to the disk!
2 - The Legend of Zelda: The Hyrule Fantasy
This was almost my number one, and for many people, it probably would be. Again, from the theme to the weapons, to other sound effects, it's almost as if the original Zelda (raise your hand if you knew the full title as the Hyrule Fantast) is a different game on the Famicom Disk System. While many may point to Zelda 2 as having even more and better enhancements, for me the original legend of Zelda is where it's at. Just listen to the sound effect when link shoots the sword across the screen, it's just so good. Plus, you can use the player 2 controller to defeat Pol's Voice!
1 - Gyruss
I know for many this will be an odd choice, but stay with me here. Gyruss is very similar to me to Tempest 2000, both in gameplay and how much I love the soundtrack. Based on classical music, the NES version sounds amazing, you can't say it doesn't. When you hear how much better the Famicom Disk System version sounds, it's a shock that there could be an improvement on something already so good. The base hits harder, the richness is even greater, and for all these reasons and more it is my number one favorite soundtrack on the Famicom Disk System.
These are not the only games with enhanced audio, simply five of my favorites. Nintendo and Konami both did amazing things with the Famicom Disk System audio, which is why they have so many games that I rank so highly. But where do these games fall in your opinion? Did I miss any out? Make sure you leave your favorite Famicom Disk System enhanced audio games down in the comments.

Just imported a red sharp twin Famicom turbo a few days ago & paid $5 for a cart of smb3. I’m hoping to get a FDS game to test it with, but the seller did say it had its drive belt replaced so I’m not too worried about it

I've imported far too many FC and SFC games to count. But the one that started it all was Zelda no Densetsu. It made me want to buy a FDS and my first disk card. I was blown away by the enhanced theme music. Plus I wanted to experience it as it was originally released. There's just something about inserting that yellow disk and hearing all the clicks and clanks of the FDS. That is unless you get an error code lol. The only negative about it is the loading times. Like in Simon's quest, every time you get hit off screen and back to town, the disk has to load. Zelda 2 is also pretty different. Just for the hell of it, I put Zelda no densetsu on my Everdrive and ran it on my NES and wow, there are a lot of tracks missing that the NES doesn't pick up. Then I installed the Voultar board that jumps pins 3 and 9 and gives the nes expansion audio just because. One of my favorites to listen to is Akamajou Densetsu, which is if course not a FDS game, but the premise is the same. I can't go back to Castlevania 3. It just sounds so lifeless compared to the Famicom. Does your turbo twin have that resistor mod that boosts the audio? When I first got my Twin, it was noticeably quieter than my FDS until I did that mod. Great video. More ppl should know about expansion audio lol.

It does drive me nuts that these classic games or collections often get released without the option for Japanese audio. While I'm nostalgic af for the NES chiptune sound, there's definitely a lot to appreciate about how much one extra soundchip can do

Nintendo doesn't support my country anymore, so all of the games I play are either digital or imports. The Japanese games really sound awesome, I think that the board is only for making things easier, it's possible to use some wires and capacitors to enable the expansion audio for much cheaper, although it requires soddering.

It's very strange that to this day, rereleases and emulated versions of every FDS game use the inferior NES versions. The sole exception I can think of is 3D Classics Kid Icarus but that was a full-on remake that just used the original assets. It's not like emulating FDS takes a significant amount of power more than emulating the NES... Is this the same in Japan? Are Metroid, Zelda, and Kid Icarus on the Nintendo Switch Online Famicom app the NES versions?

@@RoXolidthe fact that the u.s. didn't get the enhanced audio quality, to me, is deceptive of Nintendo. Couldn't we at least had a choice??? An enhanced VERSION of the cartridge ? Even the MSX version of contra and metal gear were superior in terms of sound quality. If they could stuff a super FX chip (graphical) in starfox, stunt race FX, etc... they could've given the U.S. better audio !

These are for the disc system for the famicom. It was a addon. This addon sytem had a extra audio channel The nes didnt have that addon so had one less sound channel. It also didnt have the same pinouts for cartridges so it couldnt accept those special chipped games, which while nintendo japan 3rd party companies were allowed to make their own carts with their own made special chips, usa nintendo forbid this and all carts whether made by nes or konami lets say HAD to be made by nintendo japan which could take months. This is why nes games have their soundtracks reworked for famicom disc games brought over to the usa etc.
@smacdad
@smacdad 2 месяца назад
The Famicom cartridge port had two pins connected for audio directly from the cartridge. On the NES, those pins weren't used and the audio in was on the expansion port underneath, which was never used. It was a short-sighted decision in retrospect.

@@RoXolid I do too! It's even better because there's no B button dash like we're accustomed to in Mario games making it even harder! 😉😉😁😁 I believe it has a better story arc than Super Mario USA! Plus you have to beat the game with all four characters individually to get the actual ending! I played my copy and it goes to the actual ending after beating mamu(wart) with any character that is the fourth one you used! Also there's a video on RU-vid about how to erase the save info on actual disk, because while it saves your progress, you have to do a suicide in 3-1 or similar to erase the save info! 🤔🤔

I don't agree with you at all,some fds games DO sound better and also in some cases run better too but I would say its a case of more fds games not sounding as good as the nes versions Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2 are two key games that don't sound as good Metroid is smoother in screen scrolling and has better audio overall and saves to the disk Castlevania sounds the same but saves to the disk,zelda 1 sounds better in some places but is nearly the same I own a disk system but I don't think it was all that much better,konami's audio chip for a few famicom cart games was far superior to the disk system audio but I also think the stock nes audio was equally great. Gyrus sounds great on both but yeh,fds audio is wayy better

Even the most diehard of FDS fans agree that bloody tears does sound great on the nes version. And Konami tends to do a decent job of reworking tunes to deal with the loss of the original fds channel, so the nes version rarely are actually BAD. But Zelda 1 is definitely better on FDS, so is Metroid (particuarly the title and end tunes). Kid Icarus is also definitely improved. Metroid also lags a lot less on the FDS version, because it takes less cpu to do the fds effects instead of the NES versions for say the screw attack (a common source of lag on NES version). And Gyruss is amazing, with every tune except maybe the boss one a large improvement. It's almost as much of an improvement as SCC vs PSG music on Knightmare.

It’s funny because I walked into a retro game store looking for the US version of the game and they didn’t have it. I had been researching the Japanese version for a month because it has some interesting symbolism. I walked over to check out the imports and it was right there. Needless to say I was very excited to buy it. It cost me less then the US version I eventually found. It’s way harder too.
