How to fix a Nespresso Magimix Coffee Machine that leaks water into the Capsule Box every time you make a coffee. Replace genuine parts for a fraction of the cost to send the machine away.
Nespresso were not interested in replacing my machine just a few weeks out of warranty. I had never used any other make of capsules other than genuine Nespresso ones, and they wanted €90.00 just to LOOK at it, my repair was less than €40.00 and 20 mins of my time. Simple repair that anyone can do for a very common issue.

I came across your videos when I was researching how to fix my badly leaking Magimix M100. Although my machine was different you gave me the confidence to have a go. I bought the oval tool, £3 and a set of quality Torx screwdrivers (no Philips screws inside), £18 and followed your methodology. In fact the M100 is easier to take apart and the brew chamber has no electronics, just a plastic tube to pull off so no wires to disconnect or switches to remove. It was obvious that the end of the chamber where the filter is was full of coffee gunk, as was the spout. I cleaned both with hot water and an old toothbrush and reassembled it. Perfect, no leaks. The brew chamber, being just a plastic and metal componant is cheap at £10 if I ever need to replace it. So thanks again for putting these videos on RU-vid so that I now have two Nespresso machines!

Thank you, James! I was able to fix by myself! Took awhile to get the part with Covid, and then I had to get up the nerve to begin the repair. I made the tool to remove the screws by heating the barrel from a plastic BIC pen and pushing it on the screw to get the imprint. Thanks so much!!

Thank you so much for posting this video, it has been amazing. I have dismantled my 11 year old Nespresso Milk Citiz machine (and without the oval screw, screwdriver and pliers, used a credit card and a butter knife😂as my screwdrivers were too thick- must update my tool box). I’ve now ordered a new unit from Magzimix and I’ll come back to your video for reassembly. You explain everything so thoroughly, and your video gave me confidence to tackle this project, even with weak hands (used my husbands hands for pulling the case off, it was a cringe worthy moment, but successful). Thankfully I have a spare machine, whilst I await for the £30.00 (plus £5.00 48 hr delivery) part to arrive. It’s really annoying your machine’s brew unit gave up after only 2 years😮, and Nespresso wouldn’t honour a free diagnostic. Once my machines have both given up and no longer repairable, I’m considering getting a bean to cup machine as Nespresso’s capsules have escalated in cost, and their customer service has gone down. Thanks once again James for your time and knowledge share.

Thank you so much for posting this (and making the video twice - such perseverance!). I was so fed up with my 10 year old machine leaking constantly and your video gave me the confidence to give this repair a go. Also helped that the part was supplied by a company only 25 mins away so I managed to get it all done in one afternoon. My husband was totally impressed with not just me but also your video too - incredibly helpful step by step guidance! Now onto trying to sort my Shark floor steamer….thank you again!

Thanks James for the inspiration. My machine leaked on the inside and figured it was blocked somewhere causing backpressure. The pod is pressed against a "grill" on the inside of the machine. Cleaned this with a toothbrush and flushed with water. Almost did the trick. So put a garden hose on the output nozzle of the machine (not in the kitchen!) and gave it a blast. Now works perfectly. I guess the coffee grains over time block the unit. Thank you.

Thanks for doing this, easy to follow and helpful. For those attempting this repair, the two parts I found to be the most tricky were getting the last section of the base to separate and removing the side panels. Just be patient and keep working around all the edges, preferably with a plastic pry tool, until all of the clips disengage.

Thank you very much for taking the time to prepare and post this. I have a very similar machine (cosmetic differences mainly) which had been out of use for quite a while. After watching your video, I ordered the special key and the spare part. It took quite a while to gather myself and attempt this. It was tricky, as I am not used to such tasks, but after a couple of hours I managed to complete the repair! Another difficulty I had was the fact that the pump did not start working properly straight away. This might have been due to the fact that the machine stayed unused for a very long time. With repeated efforts, and while the pump was active, pulling out and replacing the water tank, I managed eventually to get it going. Thanks again.

THANK YOU for taking the time to make this video (twice) James, I never would have attempted to fix my machine were it not for you. I bought the replacement chamber and tools and fitted it following your careful instructions, however when I re-assembled everything and tested it, the water began pumping into the machine, instead of my cup. After dis-assembling it to investigate I discovered that one of the small spring clips keeping the water tubes in position had broken! IF ANYONE READING THIS KNOWS IF THERE'S ANOTHER TYPE OF CLIP THAT I CAN USE INSTEAD, I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR ADVICE.

Perfect instruction 👍 it is a typical problem with that model. It comes when you leave the used capsule in the brewing unit. Because the wet coffee swells and the capsule gets bigger. So it busts the ring of the brewing unit. To prevent this, remember to eject the capsule immediately after brewing. I tested many different types of capsules in the last 10 years. In the result I use only nespresso or lavazza capsules. They work best

Olli, that makes a lot of sense and would explain how some people don't have any issues but others end up throwing their machines away.
@brianlaughland8960
@brianlaughland8960 4 года назад
So Olli, is that the O ring that gets burst, that some people are saying in their posts that they replace do you think? In which case is it necessary to get a whole new unit rather, than to try replacing the O ring?
@olli4611
@olli4611 4 года назад
@@brianlaughland8960 Hey Brian, i Don't know exactly what the o ring means. The thing that surrounds the capsule and brings it to the pyramid plate gets a hairline crack. You won't get this part single, I think. If you can see no hairline crack, it could be a different mistake maybe the jet, where the water hose is connected is blocked (because of using hard water). This is the mistake, when the capsule is not perforated and no coffee but only water comes. In this case you could try to blow the jet. Good luck

Thanks so much, this was a huge help and I wouldn't have been able to do it without the video. We have a Citiz without the milk attachment so it was possible to do without fully removing the base and leaving the earth attached, it made it a lot easier when reassembling at the end. It also took me a while to pry the plastic spout cover off, the clips for that are at the top and the bottom if anyone else is struggling.

Fab stuff. My Citiz started leaking after 7 years of regular use - so I retired it and bought a Sage. I found it in the loft a few days ago - Googled repairing it - bought a new head unit (£30) and followed this video! AND GUESS WHAT......? It now works perfectly with no leaks at all! It took me about 50 mins all in - and YES invest in the oval screw tool (£4)👍🏻 😊

Just to say a big thank you for this video. I followed all your advice, bought the part and the tool for the oval-head screws, and last night I successfully repaired my machine. I am very happy with myself for succeeding! The hardest part was taking the casing apart, because I was worried about using too much force and breaking something, but your advice was good - be slow and careful - and I managed it. No leaks this morning, and the coffee is better too. Thanks again

Thank you for doing this video James, it was a real help. Here in AUS, the manufacturer wanted AU$240 up front just to get them to take a look at it! With the info you put in this this video, and the special tool to remove the elliptical headed screws on the bottom and a replacement coffee difuser (?) - the part that was leaking, I was finished in under an hour and cost less than $100. Great work James, much appreciated. Two thumbs up!

Excellent and helpful video. The lungo button on ours had stopped working and other posts suggested it was just a matter of cleaning the inside of the rubber button. Your video gave me the confidence to open it up (some of the case clips require quite a bit of pressure). Once open the repair was simple and effective. I made a small tool to remove those damned oval-head screws following advice on another thread - used a bit of old 10mm rod and drilled a 3.2mm hole in the end then extended the hole slightly to oval by tilting the drill back and forth to about 3.5mm on the axis. That worked fine and removed them easily and cleanly.

The brew unit I needed for my particular model didn’t seem to be available, but I bought one for a standard Krups machine of a different serial number and it turned out to be the sameas my model. I found what was a problem for my solution and why my coffee machine still leaking. The cause was part that James talking about at 15:53 min of James clip. In my case, this part had a blockage in the tip of its nose and that was the cause of leaking. What I did, first I removed the blockage then I drilled a hole in order to remove small plastic cross at the tip of this nose to enable better coffee flow. Now I do not have leakage any more :). Please check this nose - remove any dirt and remove the plastic part on the tip of the nose itself (by drilling), then check is your machine still leaking if yes go further and order the part James suggesting.

Firstly, what a wonderful video - both precise and easy to follow and, more important, leads to a successful outcome, as it once again works perfectly. There are only a couple of things I would add. Firstly, I think James was very unlucky with his machine ,as I've had mine a number of years before the "water tray" problem ocurred. Because mine was older than James' machine, I gave my Magimix Nespresso a really good clean whilst it was in parts and before I re-assembled it. I did take James' advice and I bought the oval screwdriver as this made unscrewing the base very easy, other than the comment about having the last corner of the base "difficult" to separate. But it does come off. The only thing which might catch somebody out was that the old M190 brew unit (the bit that needed replacing) was attached to the unit with four T10 torx screws - and you got it, I didn't this size screwdriver! So, having purchased one, problem solved. Overall, a successful replacement following a perfect demonstration on how to do it. Thanks Paul. Peter McCaffrey

To remove the oval screws out on mine, I heated the end of a biro pen tube (ink cartridge removed) and pushed it onto the screw head. Because it's hot, it takes the form of the screw head and they can be unscrewed. Great if you're impacient and don't want to order the specialist version.

Thanks very much for making the video. I got the most benefit out of pulling the coffee machine apart. It gave me the confidence to pull on the plastic a bit harder than I wanted too. What I wanted to say thought to help you and your viewers, is you don't have to buy that part. You were so close to fixing the entire problem without spending a cent / penny. The part you say not to strip... and buy another one. You are right, don't strip it, it is all to do with the lever action of the pod being put in place, except for one part... the part that the flat side of the pod pushes against. That part is the reason the water is in the bottom, because it's blocked and the water is not going through. So... take out the little grate with the flat blade screwdriver, clean it with a toothbrush, put it back into place... done. No need to buy the part, just put everything back together. If you still have your old ones it will be easy to see what I mean. Go to the front where the flat side of the pod goes against the coffee machine, there is a plastic grate. (You have nothing to lose, you have already bought new parts) you will see a place where you can lever it out with a small screwdriver, hold it up to the light and you will see nothing. Clean it with a toothbrush under running water on both sides, hold it up to the light... there you go... a heap of little holes. Click it back in... done. I made a little video for you and your viewers so you can see what I mean. One very small little extra thing, and it doesn't cost anything next time. You don't want to spend 25 Euro every two years. We have had ours for almost exactly 8 years, and we figure we would have put through 3000 coffees. however we only used filtered water, this could have made a difference. This is the video I made for you so you don't have to buy the part in future ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x4ygWJ_E6Mc.html

Thank you so much for this video! Seems to be a relatively common problem with the Citiz recently. Disappointing since the manuf does not seem to acknowledge (at least in the US), and the 'keep descaling' advice is getting old. It is a struggle to remove those awful screws, but only took ten minutes and good needle nose pliers - not much point buying the tool since i've already thrown the screws away and will easily replace with phillips head screws. Maybe you can get the cover off without pulling the screws, but far easier if you do. Note that if your target is only the brew head, it's not necessary to completely remove the base connections to get enough access to remove the side covers. If you are in the US, the replacement brew head is harder to find - I finally found one for 44 dollars, and notice that PayPal went back to the UK so that's where it is coming from. Again, thank you James!

Great result! If you use your machine for more than 3 coffees per day the repair will pay for itself within 2 months if you use standard supermarket capsules, rather than the original Nespresso ones. Aldi capsules are pretty good and half the price. Using only Nespresso capsules didn’t make any difference when it came to a “just out of warranty” claim with Nespresso, so I now use supermarket capsules! 😃

I had a go at taking the brew unit apart and it seems easier than what you have already done to get to the brew unit. Less chance of snapping plastic tabs and easy to put back together. I only found one D-Ring seal... DRings are tricky to find 'off the shelf'. I tried BS125 2.62mm Section 33mm Bore EPDM Rubber O-Rings which seems a little small but seems to have fixed the leak for now. So, if you got this far, I recommend trying just replacing the seal. Maybe try a very slightly bigger one. I don't know how long this fix will last...

Thanks for your vid. I fetched mine from the basement, where it has been collecting dust and did the repair. I managed to fix it with thorough cleaning of the chamber and seals with vinegar acid and soap. We have very hard water where I live, so I'm thinking the seal was somehow clogged up with calcium.

Found that the Magimix M190 is similar construction. Bought the replacement brew unit and discovered the leak was just as bad after fitting it. It turned out the plastic spout (not supplied with the new brew unit) has two levels feeding the spout (the spout appears to be split in four, but its 2 x 2) and the lower level was blocked. In retrospect I could possibly have cleaned this with a pipe cleaner without taking the unit apart. With the spout lower level unblocked, the machine does not leak.

Great video thanks, but I had the same water leak problem, I just unplugged it, but it in the kitchen sink and cleaned the brew chamber with a Waterpik flosser, then descaled it, and it works great again, no leak or initial water before coffee when brewing. Perhaps worth a try before you go for the full rebuild! (we use the plastic Bestpresso capsules from Walmart, perhaps they leak coffee grinds a bit more?)

Thank you very much! Couldn’t work out how to take the cover odd. It is so evil to have those really subtle oval screws. Cynically designed to stop us repairing the machines and forcing us to use their expensive repair service or buy a new one. Saw another video suggesting that it usually is the percolation plate so hopefully when I eventually get it open I will be able to unblock the holes.

May have already been posted but this has post has been on a while so thought I would share my experience. I bought a ‘leaking’ machine and dismantled the unit as per above (quite straightforward just need to be careful with plastic as per most posts on here). Read on another post that you should replace o ring which is within the brewing unit (see other video on here). That looked ok so put it back - cleaned sprout (lots of coffee buildup) and then ran it through again. Leak still coming from just behind spout when capsule clamps onto front of unit. Still same - although slightly less pouring out. Anyway - ran descaled through couple of times and hey presto leak almost gone. So, moral of story - run the descaler before you start taking everything apart in case it does cure it!! Better than £30 for new brewing unit... Not sure if this will work for everyone - I’ve still ordered o ring and will probably change anyway before putting back together. Trust this helps a few people! I also replace all the star headed and oval screws with cross head screws - why they use those I don’t know (actually I do it’s so that people send back to the repairers!)

Thanks for the instructions, very clear and quite concise! I invested in the special oval screw driver and this made things very easy. Having replaced the brew unit (Torx screws on my CITIZ brew unit as mentioned below) I found water still drips from the new unit. Suspect that this is 'expected behaviour' as there is a collection reservoir - just mentioned in case someone goes to the trouble of changing the unit when it only drips slowly! (Unless you found the replacement unit didn't leak at all!) Well done for the video!
@jamesroberts2907

Mike Jurkiewicz thanks for your comments. You’re correct that the tray beneath the spent capsule cube does capture some water. A few drips each time you make a coffee, this is normal and you perhaps need to empty this tray when the spent capsule box is full. We have to remember that the capsules are under 15 bar pressure when extracting a coffee and when this pressure is released a few drops of water will drip through the spent capsule box into the tray. The issue is when you only make 1 or 2 coffees and you have to empty the tray. Hopefully this is no longer the case with your machine?

@@jamesroberts2907 Hey there, it doesn't have anything to do with the main message but i'm looking for more informations about that 15 bar pressure, in fact does this machine has an area where it gathers that much pressure? It seems too small to generate this much pressure while small professional machines are at 9 bar and weight at least 40 kg.

Eddie, Thanks. Yes, its about time Nespresso stopped taking us all for fools, the machines don't last that long for limescale to build-up!! Its a great concept, Nespresso gave us a way to enjoy nice ground coffee in many different strengths and flavours but it doesn't give them the right to treat customers like idiots. Hope you repair goes well. the toolkit I bought was this: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0189YWOIO it is quite expensive just to repair your Nespresso machine, however you can buy this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ovalkopfbit-Ovalkopfschlussel-passend-fur-alle-Jura-Impressa-Extra-Gehartet/121562808742? Much cheaper if your not planning on using a lot of specialist tools. Im not affiliated nor paid to represent these products, just trying to make it easier for folks to get better value out of their machines.

Hi, I want to thank you for this video. I have the exact same problem since like 2 years with my 4 year old Essenza Mini. It was always annoying enough to bug me but not enough to make me buy a new one. Tonight I said enough and tried gooling the problem. I dismounted the unit with a bit of help from you - a bit of struggle (looks somewhat different), I think I broke a plastic clip holding the button panel, but it should still be ok - and ordered the part for 46 euro. I'm fairly convinced it's still the same looking at the images. It's a shame parts are this expensive when a new unit costs 99 euro, but I decided I'll take the risk just for the heck of it, screw manufacturers, I'll gamble and if lucky it should serve me for some more time. #righttorepair

Had excess water leaking into the drip tray and overflowing onto the counter from our Nespresso Citiz C121. Watched this video and replaced the extractor. Back up and running. Thanks so much for the video!! As a heads up, I tried to clean up the old extractor by further disassembly but a small spring came off the back of the capsule housing part (can be detached, 2 retaining clips) and the silicone seal at the back of the extractor that connects the water hose became unseated and difficult to get reseated without worry of a leak once all back together. I gave in and bought a new extractor. I'm sure someone could figure out where and how to reset the spring but it was not worth it to me. I think it is best just to buy a new extractor which comes with a new silicone seal for the water hose. Hope this helps someone.
