Love that your daughter loves the chickens and goes right to them and picks them up! What fun she is having.

We use the bucket method for our chickens as well. Easier to clean and and replace if needed!

Get some old milk crate like Justin did..you might need to cut the back off and just have 1/2. You need also somewhere they can roost at night off the floor.

we do have a roosting bar on the opposite side of the bucket. Yeah, I just didn't want to go buy milk crates. thanks Sue.

We used buckets for our nesting boxes. Left the lid off and did not cut them. We built a perch in front for them to jump up on. Leaving the bucket whole gives them more privacy (which they like).
@SowtheLand
@SowtheLand 7 лет назад
I would have thought that the bucket would be too small. But maybe not. That may be the next thing I try! thanks for watching!
@louduhon
@louduhon 7 лет назад
You just cut the lid to a few inches. Enough to hold the nesting material in. We use pine shaving. we also have a perch in front so they have something to stand on before entering. Good luck.

Cool! I think the buckets will work perfectly. Smart idea. I've seen people use them before, but just not tailor cut like these. But they look like they will do the job just right! Let's ask the girls! Lady hens, "What do you say"?

They will I have a similar set up with the same buckets. I put them on a slight angle leaning towards the back and only cut the lid in half. The kids come off all of the time so I now keep them off and with them at an angle no eggs fall out. Also I put a screw in the front of the bucket that goes through to the wood so it is stable and I can remove it for cleaning if needed. If you trace out the inside diameter of the bucket on a lid and cut the lid you can use it as a scraper to clean out the bucket.👍🏻

the chickens are still going to poop on the bucket maybe less but you will catch them roosting on it, you can use the ordinal box you made, add the tin back on top and fix it to the outside of the coop, this was a fix we found to work really wall. also add cinder blocks to the 4 corners either tie down or lay 2x4s over the corner boards you have sticking out and you can add a few extra, but you made a huge sail
@SowtheLand

Yes, that me be my next step is attaching the boxes from outside. We'll see! Thanks Robert!

Have you checked Craigs list for your area, for free stuff that if you pick it up they will just let you have it? Lumber and stuff like that.

don't know if they still make them but if so try one of egg shaped pantyhose containers in the new nesting box.

I'm just wondering whether the chickens will find it private enough? They do like their privacy when they lay their eggs. :)

Cleo Castonguay I was thinking the same thing. I have shallow nesting boxes that are more open in the front and some of my hens don't really seem to like them

Looks kinda small? Maybe a plastic milk carton on its side, with an added sloping roof. Or add a different roof or barrier to the really nice nesting boxes you already built? I wouldn't think you'd want a solid bottom box (for hygiene), but at least this will be easy to clean. Is there any way to hang your nice boxes to the outside of the coop, so they can't perch on it at night?
@SowtheLand
@SowtheLand 7 лет назад
I may eventually try and hang those boxes if this doesn't work. This is kind of like an experiment i guess. Thanks for watching!

If it was on the outside of the coop, predators would have an easy access to fresh eggs.

You should of turned the bucket side wase and cut a hole just big enough for the chicken to get in. But we will see.

Put some fake eggs (golf balls) in to let the chickens know you want their eggs there.
@jerrycampbell634

but also chickens do prefer privacy when they are laying, so maybe make a curtain to hang around the bucket.

From what I have seen -- never had chickens myself -- the top of the nesting box should be covered but by a steep roof that they would slip off. If you extended the back of the boxes you made so it was taller -- and then put on the tin roof sloping to the front -- it would look like a wooden version of this one I found on the net. www.meyerhatchery.com/productinfo.a5w?prodID=BB-10&A5WSessionId=fb37e62831e04bb298c080bdb30aec15 Love how your chickens are so used to your daughter that they just sit and allow her to pick them up :o)
