Net Making Knots Close Up The Two Net Making Knots That I Use and Why
I have done a couple of net making videos and some people have asked why I use two different net making knots. First of all I started using the sheet bend method of tying a mesh knot. But there were occasions I found that the knot would slip and turn into a slip knot, and ruined my net. So to get round that I used the double knot method, which for me seemed to prevent the knot from slipping.
I know that there are other net making knots out there, but I just wanted to show the two that I use in close up. This way, if you are starting out, you can see what to do and how to prevent a slip knot forming at the bottom of your mesh!
The two different knots are taken from these two videos:

To be honest that was the main reason for learning net making. I just wanted to produce something that was easier to follow. Even some of the books I purchased were awful!! Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated. Are you more of a practical or decorative knotter?

The fishermen have been using the double knots method in our regions long ago. It's very common as it does not slip. I think some other countries also using this method. I learned to make casting net from local fishermen since very young. The method of making cast nets are almost similar all over the world.

The second method is a very good tip for beginners. My first net I attempted with the first method, but was having some issues. My second net, I tried the second (double) method and I didn't have a single slipped knot ... and more important I was able to concentrate on all of the other details that a beginner is struggling with. Thanks! And while I am at it: I cut my netting needle out from cardboard and used a ruler for the net gauge. (For a beginner just getting a feel of things, they worked great!!)

I like that second knot. When I made nets(thinking of starting again) I had problems with a single sheet bend(my line just didn't have enough mass to it to prevent the knot from rolling out) and ended up using a double sheet bend. For some reason it worked a lot better at preventing the slippage but I may give your knot a go. Any idea what it's called "officially"? BTW, I use a plastic netting needle but it's got a split at the point so you don't have to do that double-wrap thing that your plastic and wooden needles require. It makes it really easy to load the needle and I don't have to risk breaking it nearly as much.

What I was taught was the single turn was ok for natural line like hemp, but the double turn was more secure on synthetics.
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 6 лет назад
I think you may well be right, a bit like using five tucks when splicing synthetic rope. I must say though that when I have use the single method in synthetic twine, even after some time my net seems fine. But there again, my net is more ornamental than a tool.

I use both knots making cast nets. The first one works on bonded nylon when hand knitting them They are dipped when finished the which sets the knots. If you pull both sides of the bottom of the mesh you tied to before dipping it can flip the knot under the mesh just like letting it slip under while tying. The second knot is what I use when making monofiliment panel nets. Mono is slippery and I double knot each tie using the second knot first and then another sheet bend on the same mesh. There are far fewer knots in a panel net so it is much faster to make one.

Not sure if it's something original, or if it's been done before. (I don't recall seeing a name for it.) But instead of a bend make a loop on one side, and the other line that's passing through you tie what amounts to a clove hitch over where part of the loop doubles up. If you cinch that up, it's unlikely to go anywhere at all. Not the smallest knot, but seems like one that will not shift or slip in position down either line. Another one that will hold place is more difficult, since it requires overhand loops put into and properly spaced along the first line that you're tying to. (A bit of crazy planning ahead on this.) Those overhands aren't cinched or tightened starting out, but it is important that you work them into position to have the spacing right. With the second line you go through and follow the first line's overhand loop back through itself. If you do it right, you get a form of water knot. Cinch that, and it also doesn't go anywhere. And this is a neat and small knot. And if there's tension on either half it's not going to lose its place or come apart. (The water-knot type thing can also be used to put a nice round loop into a rope that doesn't collapse, but I'm not sure if there's a particular name for that. Seems the water knot tie is more common to join two lines together instead.)

THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! I live in Florida and I learned both knots many years ago, but when I moved away, I lost interest inaking nets and hammocks. SoI forgot how to tie the knots. THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME?!! AND; if you just keep reminding people to NOT let go of the bottom of the loop as they pull the "first" knot tight, then they will usually maintain a proper tight knot. THANK YOU AGAIN!!!

Johnny Debt I struggled when first started making nets because other people did not repeat the knot like you do. They just make one and go on never really explaining the knot. I like the way you use larger cordage to explain the knots. Would you use the first knot or second knot when it comes to making a casting net?

Many thanks for taking the time to view and comment. Having made a few nets now, I tend to alternate between the two knots. In my mind I feel that the double method is more secure, I would also recommend this one for a beginner. The main reason being is that the sheet bend method is too easy to get wrong when you first start out. However, when I mess with my nets, after they are made, I do not really see one as being better than the other.

@@KnottingKnots sheet bend method is mainly for hammocks, For casting net better use double knot very secured as the monofilamen line is very thin and slippery.

@@abdazizmohamad2511 I find the sheet bend is fine in natural or non slippery line. If it is slippery, I then revert to the double knot method. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.

You can sometimes rescue it by pulling on the two sides of the "yellow" cord like you're trying to pull them taut. This should cause the rest of the knot to try to slip upward over the "red" cord. If you've already pulled the original knot too tight, don't expect it to work very often though.

two questions........do you use anything to help protect your hands from the twine, such as powder and tape.... or..... just a good callous formed from years of netting??? .... the second question.....have you ever heard of or used a technique called the flying dutchman.....
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 4 года назад
Hello Billy, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. When it comes to net making, I do not use any form of hand protection. Mind you having said that, none of my nets that I make are large enough to cause me a problem. I think when it comes to the Dutchman variant, the knot is tied underneath rather than over the top, as I show in my videos. I am sure there might be a good reason for tying one way or another. Mind you some knots vary from county to county or even country.

Nice video, can you please make a video like this on how to untie the knot of a sack of rice from the grocery. Thanks
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire
@CurmudgeonExtraordinaire 2 года назад
I suspect that there could be quite a bit of variation on how sacks of rice are closed, dependent upon the manufacturer and the country in question. Around here, in the large bags (25-50 lbs), they are sewn and if you pull the right end, they easily come loose -- basically unzip... Some bags are sealed (via heat or ultrasonic welding of the plastic) and the only way to open them is to cut them open...

Thank you! 03:25 But what I don't unterstand, why you go with the needle , when you have passed under the red line to the right, you go first to the left over your hand, then again to the right. And then erst start to go under the red bight? Why don't you go when the needle is on the right side at once under the red bight? Like you see it at 04:00

I tried for hours to get monofilament nets fixed and it is really difficult. I have resorted to hitches. A hitch allows me to get the net exactly the right length as well much easier. The gillnets require double sheet bends and they do not flow well enough for me and tend to close improperly. Now, this is no help for pickups. The original net appears made of overhands; so easy. There must be an alternative for monofilament pickups.

I find myself watching your videos over and over again. I think with enough pressure on the net this version could also collapse and then slide as before. What if you put the second go around through the bight of the yellow rope? Then the red rope could not pull through the bight. Maybe Ferrule Bezel has the answer with using the Carrick bend. Great video and great explanation, thanks. Keep them coming!

The only time I have had a problem is when I tie the single knot version wrong at the very begining. However, just use the double lock version if you really want security.

When you say double lock are you referring to a double sheet bend?
@KnottingKnots
@KnottingKnots 5 лет назад
Yes, but is it a double sheet bend? The only reason I say this is that a double sheet bend usually goes around the whole thing twice. Where as this variant comes up between the V and then goes round. It may well still be classed as a sheet bend??

I see, you call it a sheet bend. Makes sense. A Japanese sheet bent simply has a twist in the red chord, otherwise it is the same. The Japanese one also hold better.
