Netflix Hunger Ending Explained 

Asian movies on Netflix are killing it these are some of the most interesting and well put-together movies I have ever seen in a long while.

The animalistic and bloody shots (almost cannibalism like) of the chef's food and clients eating contrasts so much with the girl's cooking and eating. The cinematography of this movie was absolutely amazing. Def felt like a thriller. Sadly the lovey dovey scenes (useless, could have done without a love story) didn't seem to fit with these darker scenes and thus the movie mashed all those moments from different movie genres together instead of focusing on the dark critique of the society only.

The Thai food movie that's a mix of "The Menu" and "Whiplash" is somewhat similar in some ways, but it's not entirely a copy because it has its own storyline. The story is about a middle-class girl who dreams of elevating herself in high society by showcasing her cooking skills. However, her successful recipe doesn't make her as famous as she expected, and the villainous chef is straightforwardly evil. The characters lack depth in the latter part of the movie, turning it into a typical good vs. Evil scenario, leading to a happy ending that's too easy and predictable. Darker viewers may be slightly disappointed, but overall, the movie is enjoyable, with the lead actor charmingly portraying the role, making the viewers engaged in every scene. There are many beautifully shot cooking scenes, and the production value is high. It is the first Thai movie on Netflix that feels like it has reached a high international standard.

Very engaging film for any food lover. The main character played by Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying did a terrific job as an actress. You can really feel the emotions during the intense scenes. Sadly she was the only character with any depth. It felt like her world and everyone was just living in it. The supporting roles were kind of interesting but only surface level. Many of the plot turns were pretty cheesy. The scenes of violence and the reasons behind them were random, weird and had no build up. The head chef was cool, and stoic, which is to be expected from many successful chefs, however, he had outbursts that didn't make that much sense. There was a few ominous scenes of rich people living out their gluttony with depictions of them eating flesh-like food. It was a clear dynamic between rich people betrayed as greedy while low-status people betrayed as simply, caring, loving, yet frustrated. It was very interesting to see this depiction, especially during the flashback scene of the Head Chef's upbringing. The comment about the caviar had me burst out laughing. The cinematography was enjoyable and the dishes looked great. Its probably was kept me engaged the most. Overall, this film was good. I would recommend it for sure. Many aspects were rushed, and had little development, but remained exciting and had scenes that moved me. The ending will leave most with lots of questions and unfulfilled, but you will give reflections.

5 minutes into the movie and i literally told myself " I would rather work in her familys shop cooking humble delicious food to regular families than work for rich, snobby, bored people any day-!!" Her family cooks food for people to enjoy, eat, live. The chefs cook for rich people who are bored and looking for excitement. No appreciation. The ending literally taught her what I already knew 5 minutes into the movie. Its just common sense..!

This reflects those influencers and rich who goes and follow the trend. Like patronizing the luxury brands that even its a shitty quality , as long as it will make them look rich on social media , they will go for it.

The film showcases a stark contrast between the rich and the poor's appreciation of food. The ending of the film highlighted such contrast. While the rich wastes food(not finishing the dishes prepared by the chefs), the poor lives out of leftovers just to survive.

Hunger had an unique intense tone throughout which made it an intriguing watch despite the slow paced narrative. The film definitely is lengthy but doesn't feel that way and definitely the director must be praised for that. A cook at a small restaurant is offered to join famous chef Paul's crew, to be trained under him and eventually she grows in rank while enduring his strict ways. Things take a turn when she quits and is pitched right against Paul. How she handles this while fearing to lose more than she can bargain, forms the story. The characters remained intriguing and that helped being invested in the story throughout. The lead's family and her financial crisis is well established to showcase her need to make it big. With all the craziness inside the kitchen, Chef Paul's backstory explaining why he chose to become a chef was impactful. It definitely had a darker tone but didn't go to the extreme. The climax was however underwhelming and that is the reason for my less rating. For all the build up, the climax felt like playing too safe wrt the power game instead of milking the teacher vs pupil angle. I would still recommend this movie for the honest attempt.

I remember Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying from 2017's Bad Genius and here too, she's phenomenal. While the easy (and obvious) way to look at Hunger is Whiplash meets The Menu, the writing and direction are both pretty solid. They have an interesting tale to tell here; one that doesn't just stick to the hierarchy in a fine-dining restaurant's kitchen. Of course, those bits are as hard-hitting as they come, but the socio-economic layers that the writing offers, sweeten the pot. The protagonist's character arc is clear-cut, and the transitions that she goes through - physically, emotionally, and financially - are always at the film's forefront. Not only is the film super engaging, it makes you root for the protagonist's eventual realizations. How far are you willing to go to stay relevant and successful in the modern era? And how much success and relevance is too much? Very pertinent questions like these are answered through fiery exchanges between the leads, against the backdrop of deliciously cooked food (and some grotesque consumption). The film also doesn't shy away from doing its bit on "eating the rich" and speaking in detail of their high-profile perversions. From a thematic perspective, Hunger has as much in common with the Malayalam film Ustad Hotel as the films I mentioned above. Nothing comes above family, I guess? The scene at the hospital between Nopachai Chaiyanam and Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying is spectacular. Not only does it open eyes to the antagonist's understanding of life, but it also throws darts at the protagonist for the choices she's about to make. Same goes for the climactic showdown between the two, but this section treats celebrity connoisseurs as objects of feeding, hence the lessened impact. If Netflix is doing something right, it's in giving Thai cinema the funding it needs to make competent drama-thrillers like this with great production values and cinematography.

If you know something about Thai society, the ethnicities of the characters also suggest details about their backgrounds. Aoy is Thai-Chinese who are generally more well-to-do (her family is actually middle-class by Thai standards) and tend to own businesses that have been passed down through generations whilst Chef Paul is mixed-blood i.e. he's probably a love child and his father abandoned him and his mother upon returning to his home country.

this feels like watching The Devil Wears Prada bit with chefs instead of fashion

The movie is largely the brilliance of the lead who plays the chef. Humble, stifled emotion, poverty - all the making of a great movie. The viewing is great with English subtitles but can't replace the original Thai. On a broader scale it offers the viewer insight into class structures and wealthy and hedonistic players in Thai society. Would recommend for the viewer wishing an experience in understanding the modern challenges of Thailand and in particular Asian culture as it weaves through new times of wealth and indulgence. As expected the movie is clean of raw sex scenes and instead focuses on the power and energy between the two leading players. Highly recommended.

I thought Chef Paul was doing some black magic thing to make his consumers eat his food crazily. And his black magic stuff he get rhe supply from the village people where Tone brought Aoy using the boat. So at the end police caught chef Paul due to that lol. 😂 But reality he was caught for the illegal activity...

Ngl I notice that when paul feeds his meals he looks down on the rich as animals feasting as if they have never eaten like how the screen turns red but aoy sees them as people telling and showing them her story and her generation

I don’t understand this sudden depiction of successful chef as unhappy, power driven and desperate. It’s almost like a new wave. This also happened in The Menu. Fine dining can also be done with joy and love please.

This movie truly reflects what i feel about many fine dining that has blossomed in recent years. Having tasted from both spectrum, i admit that initially i was trying to justify the food i tasted from fine dining, probably even trying to compensate it just for the social status. But today, i let it go and if you were to ask me again, i'd tell you with hesitation that most fine dining taste just as common as our daily good food. That's why me and my wife hardly entertain any new food trend or celebrated chefs anymore these days..

While other character except her family lost their sanity in the pursuit of dirty success (never ending hunger). 😊😊😊 But I cant help comparing this film with "burnt" and "chef" because of lack of detail about cooking ( I meant cooking discussion not cooking scene).😅

I feel like you'll only enjoy this movie if it's your first time discovering subjects presented in the movie. Other than that it's it's not really good. Beautiful visual and striking imagery, just not a lot of substance. The storyline is also weirdly rushed for something with so much dead space.

Well-cooked Thai drama-thriller with almost the right ingredients!

Honestly, the worst movie I’ve seen in a whlie The story was incoherent, the script was bad, one dimensional characters and drawn own unnecessary scenes. the actress was mediocre and so expressionless. The only emotion I got was at the end when she was crying The character development was so out of nowhere. A girl who couldn’t even cut properly suddenly promoted to sous chef? Opening scene made the kitchen look like a well oiled machine with disciplined cooks and then suddenly one of the cooks start smoking in the kitchen??? Seemed to me as just creating a conflict for conflict’s sake. The music was so dramatic it almost made some scenes comical. What even was the point of having love story? Should have just focuses on rivalry between Paul and Aoy. the movie just did not make sense to me in so many ways. Basically it was just such a bad script with unbelievable, ridiculous story lines There are better movies out there worth your time than this one

Best movie I've seen so far this year (2023).

This is a film of two halves - unfortunately, these two halves belong in different movies. The first half has the tone and feel of scabrous satire, clearly wanting to deliver social commentary. Here we are skirting really, really close to the same territory explored by The Menu. The second half discards this and, instead, mimics the dynamic and arc of Wall Street - only with restauranteurs. Which is a shame: the first half was visually arresting and had the potential to be both provocative and interesting. The second half less so. This is another one of those movies which cause me to scratch my head: what did this want to be? What does the film maker imagine this film to be about? If you're interested in writing, film-making or whatnot, there is such a thing as the elevator pitch. You're in a lift with some hotshot producer. You've got until those elevator doors ping to pitch your movie. This film, alas, fails that simple test.

Kinda reminds me of food wars with Souma's father he was known as a demon cook with such amazing skills, made unbelievible delicious food for the high class but it was never enough till he met a small food restaurant bar, fell in love with the owners daughter and the three ran it together. He was much happier there then cooking for high rich lust individuals

Great acting but stupid plot. First I don’t get whats the point of Chef Paul keep go against Aoy. If he would wanna ruined her career he would have easily do it and sabotage her restaurant since he’s so famous. Secondly, okay he wanna prove the point that the world it’s prejudice. Let’s say go with it, the world it’s prejudice, Paul wanna made Aoy understands that. Even she knows it and wanna be like Paul, she first need to made a name of herself by cooking good first then only she can be like Paul. Isn’t that what she is doing , climbing up the ladder first to be at the top then only be like Paul. So I really get it what’s the whole point Paul it’s doing against her. The director trying to the audience the world it’s prejudice , but he’s should use fashion to tell it that would more sense. Cause in f&b no matter bias or prejudice, if your restaurant it’s not consistent you will ended up losing crowd too. That’s why I think it’s a stupid plot, but great acting by Aoy 👍

The movie first and foremost asks the fundemental question every human ask themselves. Devote life to proffessional skill and work or devote life to your family and have work life secondary? The protagonist realizes that while she claims economic and class status she doesn't gain any wealth, the thing she set out to find. She finds out that she already has wealth but she was too blind to see it until she nearly lost her family and stranded into a lonely life because shw lost sight at what was important to her. The movie naturally addresses multiple questions such as economic/class status, the hubris and ignorance of people who never experienced poverty and to a certain degree even addresses those issues and projects them unto the audience. We also have more than we could dream of in comparison to alot poorer people and often fail to see it, we're too focused climbing the top to see how far up we already are. We get caught up with self worth and hard work and reach a point where we believe other people are at a worse spot than us because they never worked hard enough for it like we did this the quote "you were never hungry enough". We can see the chefs soul drive to cook is his own loathing of the rich class, seeing them as something sub human. His own dishes reflect the vile and grotesque nature of his clients. His own food is a clear statement of how much he despises the rich and they are so ignorant that they never think about what is under their nose. His pleasure derived from seeing the most powerful people being so pathetically dependant on a nothing more than a lowly son, of a lowly poor maid. The final competition is where ideologies class, love vs hate, humanizing versus dehumanizing. What's funny is that both of their ideologies are correct about the world that surrounds them. Our protagonist quit because first and foremost, she was proven wrong, making a food achieve the true wealth she had all along, a humble, real life and family that truly love her unconditionally. She realised that the only way to the top, was for her to sacrifice everything she stood for, to rig all odds to favor her and destroy anyone who gets in her way.

Ok let’s talk about this. This movie is an abomination to any cook, chef, sou chef, etc. the beginning, I’m sorry, but if you went to culinary school and you don’t know that cooking fried rice involves making it with left over, refrigerated, rice, then you really need to either get your money back from said school, quit all together, or sue said school. Secondly, you’re telling me that the main character stood ALL NIGHT, wasting nearly $10,000 worth of wagu beef, just so she can learn to simply cook the thinly sliced beef quicker by like a minute, then she needs to never cook again. The end result of her learning to cook a damn steak is to simply cook it for 17 seconds, that was it. There wasn’t a certain technique, or some secret of how to cook the beef. She simply just has to cook it very fast. What in the world were these writers thinking? Cooking with a wok involves a certain cooking technique not “learning to cook it very fast”. Thirdly, anyone who’s anyone has smoked cigarettes when working in the kitchen. The fact that a professional chef was dumb enough to smoke, in the kitchen, while cooking, and while the main chef is in the same building just goes to show you that whoever made this movie has never spent time in a professional kitchen. Also the main character, how are you an Asian chef and do not know any cutting techniques? ITS THE MAIN THING you learn when becoming an Asian chef! There are so many things wrong with this movie that it’s an insult. And don’t say it wasn’t about the cooking because that’s bullcrap. The menu movie wasn’t about the cooking because there was a total separate main story that used cooking to tell it. This movie uses the story to talk about the cooking. Also the fact that the sou chef who discovered the main character in the beginning took one bite out of whatever she made and was like yes come cook with me, is pure bullcrap. Supposedly he was so blown away by what she made, that he never asked for it again. Also she just made that meal, HER FATHER was the one who made the menu so if I was the sou chef I’d actually talk to the father of the main character NOT THE COOK. I’d understand if she used some kind of technique that he’s never seen before and was like oh yea she definitely needs to cook with HUNGER then yea I’d believe it. Lol there are just way too many things that is just plain bullcrap about this movie.

idk movie was lowkey ass, plot was just so off, thinking something sinister was happening in the background with Paul. The family killing. The shrimp situation. Doesn’t add up to the ending it had. Couldn’t decide if it was gonna be a love story, mystery, or a life lesson. Just a weird mixture to get attached and say it’s well made. Still good movie, just confusing. My opinion of course.
