Hey, French guy here. Just to be clear: This.not.a.culture.thing. And this is extremely infuriating that anyone would even use this argument. The shots you showed are quite shocking and made me extremely uneasy... This is not acceptable for a movie and this is not normal in the French culture either. Actually, going to rephrase it: This is not an acceptable way to depict children in any medium and this should not be normal in any culture either.

I made sure my blinds were closed and covered my eyes (like an 11-year old watching a scary movie) multiple times.

I found myself squinting through the dance scenes. After they were over I felt like I committed a crime. Kept looking out the window for police.

This is not just in movies. My gf and I were out of town and there was a dance contest going on. Some of the girls in that contest could not have been more than 5 or 6, they had them dressed in the same outfits with a ton of makeup and doing the SAME moves. We both had to leave right away as we both felt disgusted.

The movie Pretty Baby features Brooke Shields at 10 years old and includes full frontal nudity while a photographer takes a picture of her lying on a couch. And a bathing scene. Not sure how it's legal.

I honestly feel bad for the camera guy. I'm a photographer and personally I can tell he was not comfortable with filming ass shots because he kept trying to film faces more so but the director kept telling him to film the girls bodies. That's fucked up. I hope he got paid well.

We cancelled Netflix months ago and haven’t looked back. Not only did this cuties thing happen, but they raised their rates during the peak of Covid when people are at home stuck with nothing to do.

I heard that the cinematographer of this film actually has some experience with this type of shit, I think in 2017 he produced a short film that focused mainly on a seven year old girl running around topless. The whole film crew should be investigated including the parents of the children who somehow agreed to this shit.

Yeah you can't defend this when the camera is literally focused on their butts. Also their dance moves are literally the same choreography as the cardi B WAP video.

Even if the film was supposed to be about the dangers of sexualization, they didn't actually NEED to sexualize the actresses. They could have just instantly cut the camera to the audience or whomever they were performing for and have their expressions and dialogue imply what is happening. The actresses then wouldn't even have to do anything since they would be offscreen. This is one of those cases where the director SHOULD have broken the rule of "show don't tell."

Let me just tell you as someone who's got close connections to France through friends and family, who's traveled across Europe and still lives in Belgium: *None of this is European culture in any way, shape or form. Not French, not German, not any culture. This is pedophilia, plain and simple.* The idea that anyone is defending this movie as "It's a culture thing" is, to me, the same as excusing terrorist executions cause it's a culture thing. It's the same as saying Gulags in the cold war were a culture thing. Crimes are never a culture thing, crimes are crimes. Especially when, in the country of origin, this would also be considered a crime.

For a film that is supposedly making a statement against the sexualizing of children, they sure do alot of sexualizing of these child actors. You don't fix a problem by doing more of it. I can't believe people would defend this movie. We must be careful of what behavior we normalize.

The problem is: If u want a movie against murder, crime or drugs, u will have murder, crime or drugs portraid. Because the act of, for example, crime is bad. Not the portraying. But the crime of child porn is the act and the portraying. So if someone talks : "This movie shows the problem..." NO, this would be right with crime or drugs, but on this topic, it IS the problem.
