Netflix's Locke and Key's taken a long road to get from the six volume graphic novel and into your Netflix queue. Here's how showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill adapted Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's comic about a family discovering magical keys in their father's ancestral home, and all the changes they made along the way. It's time to ask What's the Difference?

It honestly annoys me how they always forget about the music box key and the mirror key, those 2 are some of the most powerful keys and they didn’t even used them for nothing useful, like defeating Sam or Dodge, I mean they were all wondering how to defeat her/him just use the mind control box and say “ go to the mirror “ and lock them there, easy peasy

I think the characer's stupidity REALLY got in the way of the story when they were looking at Duncan's memories and saw that the identity key existed, and then 5 seconds later, saw their dad kill someone, and didn't once think that MAYBE the keys (or specifically the identity key) might have had something to do with it. I know technically it didn't, but STILL.

I kind of enjoyed it overall, but the characters are all idiots - there were so many opportunities to get out of bad situations with the keys/magic music box etc. And they never think to use the most advantageous things you could imagine when it calls for it. If the characters never did anything stupid, there would be no story, it ALL relies on characters being dumb, Ellie tries to resurrect Lucas, Bodhi frees the Well lady, they lose all the keys easily, they constantly make stupid decisions, they trust people quickly even though they know there's a shapeshifting key? They just left that lady trapped in her own head? They didn't figure that part out? it's completely erratic about who can remember what too, theres always a convenience, and even though I figured out the Gabe twist, I wasn't sure if it was an echo, or if there was a real Gabe at some point, or how he knew the Savinis, and so on...it's probably obvious, but it all felt needlessly convoluted. And they literally bring Lucas the key when they know he has the crown and they know where he is. It would be like someone going to the Death Star with the location of the secret Rebel Base, and walking right into Darth Vader's bedroom. Its stupid. Oh, and don't get me started on how they let a little kid dictate the potential fate of humanity, they just let a little kid wander off and play detective and protect potential world ending keys? And imagine if a crazed gunman walked into your home, someone who has already killed one of your family members....and you're complete expendable....and he has a loaded gun. I think most people would hold back on the sass and insults. I think you'd keep your mouth shut in that scenario and not piss off a possessed maniac. Right? Actually - why didn't Kinzie say...."I'll give you the key, I hid it in the music box, only I can open it" And then when she opens the music box she tells Sam? Was that his name (the gunman) ...she tells the gunman "shoot yourself in the balls and then head". Problem solved.
@rvantong
@rvantong 4 года назад
Kinsey being sassy with Sam was due to her removing fear from her mind. But yeah, I also don't get how the music box wasn't used. They could've literally ended the whole situating from the other room..

Not a huge fan of the Netflix series. The cuteness is sometimes too sweet and the decisions the characters make are just plan stupid. To the point you are kind of rooting for the bad guys. Stranger Things does a way better job of creating a tight and yet entertaining storyline with children as the protagonists and still having interesting relationships with each other and the other characters around them. Locke & Key definitely has their work cut out for them if they want this series to have any kind of success. I wish they left it TV-MA... making a more family friendly series (unless done very well) doesn't seem to breed the same popularity are Marvel films. Plus, on the rare chance that any execs read these comments... if you go into a comic book shop... the people you see in there are mostly older teens and adults. You rarely see families or children younger than high school age. That is your target demo.

I read the comics and loved them. When I seen there was a NetFlix series I was excited and then I watched it. I don’t say that to say I don’t like it, they wanted a wider audience with more mainstream appeal and i understood that when I watched the show. Do I love the original comics? I hate when writers think they're doing something interesting or different for whatever reason and say that it will keep even the readers on their toes, but then by making changes they lose the initial audience. It's one thing when you're taking advantage of the different medium, but altering things for no apparent or necessary reason annoys me and makes me feel conflicted- mostly because I'm the type of person to really compare an original work to its adaptation. I thought the first season of the series was good and easy to binge, but there wasn't anything surprising. The ending plot twists were easy to pick up on in my opinion and I was more just confused as to why things went in certain directions and why specific things got more focus. Something I really like about the comic series is how dark it is, but to me with the lighter, teen show take with the adaptation, they lose a lot of the hard-hitting moments and storylines. The comics are quite memorable and the show is a jumble in my mind.
@jussometoucan2337
@jussometoucan2337 4 года назад
Bailee Walsh , completely agree. Never read the comics but I think if you’re going to do an adaptation of something it’s better stick to the source material as closely as possible. I’ve binged the series while working and every plot point was painfully obvious. The problem with a lot of today’s shows is they feel the need to put twist and turns. Gotta have that “aha moment.” I personally don’t think there’s anything wrong with knowing where a story is going or a cliché so long as it is written and executed well. And regrettably for this series the only mystery I still haven’t figured out is how this show managed to snag itself a other season in the works.

The TPBs are sold at the museum underneath the Government Palace, a major tourist spot. I'm OK with cutting out Nina being raped and stuff like that, but they turned this into Riverdale, down to the photography. If you read the comics, the colouring and shading is sharp. But more importantly, the comics unearthed the real thing at the heart of horror: Trauma and grief, as Ari Aster captured so well in 'Hereditary'.

You guys should do the Netflix umbrella academy too, I’m tired of getting into a drunk tirade to explain why the comic is far superior to my friends. And honestly I hate all the changes made in the show, it feels wrong. I don’t mind more keys but the blatant changes to the rules and lore doesn’t feel like trying to keep the audience guessing it feels like Netflix said, “this is lame we could do better!” I would have preferred a soft reboot/sequel/prequel. You could tell the story’s about an earlier or later Locke family or if you wanted to make a kid friendly show have a younger cast collect the keys like Pokémon with a cartoonish villain. This somewhere in between dark and kid friendly and rewrite of elements just feels like a shameless cash grab

I agree with all your points. But Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode are the new Key Keepers and it’s them that are destined to stop Dodge and close the Omega door forever. The story depends on them.

The differences made for the show is good on its own. The graphic violence in the comics would never be duplicated in the series for sure.

The show was "ok". I never read the comic, but I do wish the show leaned more towards horror than it does. As-is it kinda feels like a spiderwick type story, which the comic obviously is not. I don't know if cinefix was being serious or sarcastic when they said Elle being the one thrown into the omega door was surprising... Cuz it wasn't... At all. I saw that coming a mile away. The other thing that bothered me is Gabe being Dodge. We are introduced to Gabe so early on. How would gabe/dodge know that kensi would join in on that movie? Gabe had to be a new kid too, yet that's never mentioned, and it seems like he had been part of the group for a while. So I'll admit, I didn't realize Gabe was really dodge til probably the last episode. But that's cuz it doesn't make any sense

@@luciusvalentine5722 can you recommend comics like these which are not marvel or dc?
@BadMoody420
@BadMoody420 2 года назад
@@educatedguess7416 sorry a bit late. But Locke and Key is definitely a good comic choice. I’d also recommend things like The Sandman, Watchmen, and select Batman comics that focus beyond the super hero tropes.

It's funny how bloody dark comic books or graphic novels get kid zoned or teen zoned in film/TV adaptations.

I wanted to like the show but the ending soured the already weak adaptation. The last twenty minutes where they held your hand. Target audience ages 12 -16. Show written for ages 4 - 8.
