She didn't mention that looking at screens (and other artificial lights) can subject you to excess levels of blue light which can interfere with melatonin production. I don't know if all blue light filters on devices block out all excess amount of blue light. In nature, we get a healthy level of blue light from the sun but the sun goes down and our body naturally prepares for sleeping, at this time excess blue light is going against nature. Melatonin doesn't just help you with sleeping.

Excessive phone use or anything similar such as gambling, pornography, video games, Tik Tok, etc. The more we enage with those activities the worse our baseline dopamine levels are going to be. What that means we need more and more to excited. We need more and more to feel joy. Also our attention span gets worse. Another thing I'd like to point out is (based one of the previous episodes of this podcast), Steven apparently has ADHD so we also have to take this to an account. People with ADHD need more stimulation to get motivated/focus. Myself as an HSP I actually need to stay away from stimulation. Reading books, meditation/mindfulness, writing helps me tremendously. I avoid the news. I am not on social media, Tik Tok, don't watch TV, Netflix, don't play games, don't watch porn, etc. With RU-vid I put time limits on how much time I spend on it. I also sometimes have cold showers, avoid too much caffeine, I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke either. My energy levels are high, quality of my sleep is good, my attention span is really good. And I really enjoy little things in life. I can also engage with difficult tasks and have motivation to do them. There are many other things that can ruin our brains/wellbeing/mental health: - loneliness - unprocessed trauma - suppresing emotions - stress in general - lack of sunlight - sugar - certain types of medication/drugs - people pleasing - not living a life according to own values - negative core beliefs (hating yourself, being self-critical) - not being authentic (no opportunities for self expression) - being around negative/abusive people/environments (e.g. being subject to narcissistic abuse, DV, any other forms of abuse)

I am 51 and I still have a feature phone/dumb phone. And I still use my old digital camera to take photos. I suggest you getting rid of your smartphone, buying a dumb one and start a new life! You will still be able to use your laptop (almost anywhere), when you need internet access, but you won't be tempted to use your smart phone while walking or travelling! And you will become a normal human being!

family of 4 walks into same restaurant I am having lunch in. Family is seated after which all four proceed to fixate on their cell phones. Waiter approaches them and they put down cell phones long enough to order, then all return their attention to cell phones. Food arrives. Family eats, saying little to each other it seemed. Meal is consumed. Family returns to their phones briefly before leaving. what the F is wrong with this picture?? would these people be easy to manipulate by a technocracy? duh....

I think social media for socialising is akin to processed foods for nourishment. There will be a wealth of mental (and physical) health problems identified over the coming years (I’m sure many have already been identified) just as processed foods as caused so much health problems over the last 50 years.
@scorpohead
@scorpohead 18 дней назад
That is a good analogy but I think it is actually much more destructive to overall human health than processed food.

What she says is true. I Have had insomnia since birth, gets worse by the decade. All my real friends were dead before the age of 50. All of my and my wifes acquaintances have dissappeared since covid. I now find it slow and difficult to collect the words together then format them into coherent language on the rare occasions that I do Speak to someone about something interesting or worthwhile.

Wow! The brain knows the difference between real social connections and social media connections. As for meditating on loving-kindness, we have scriptural instructions Ps.48.9 O God, we meditate on your unfailing love as we worship in your Temple. (NLT) Thank you Steve and Dr Wendy
@agatastaniak7459
@agatastaniak7459 11 дней назад
Well, brain does not see any difference between real and imagined, so as long as one has a vivid imagination social media connections or even imagined connections may work well for the brain. The issue is more nuanced, social media interactions do not always work like real life, face to face interactions which for example force the brain to deal with sarcasms or abstract jokes or any jokes, require analysis of facial microexpressions or emotions in human voice, analytics of body movements and such. So in essence for the social media social connections to feel "real" for the brain the interaction has to be richer than just text and pictures. But if it emulates person to person contact to a high level than yes, such "fake" or "virtual" social connection can be perceived as "real" by the brain.

I'm curious: she asks if social media takes you away from intereacting with real people. What if it's the other way around? What if social media is the only connection you have with loved ones? Of course you can go out and meet people, but you won't always be successful.
@pravitt4852

The coin has two sides.
@agatastaniak7459
@agatastaniak7459 11 дней назад
If it's only connection you have with loved ones over time it may become more like a relationship an autistic person has with others. And as far as research can tell it decreases the empathy for those "loved ones". As for the other way round, there is some research showing that highly sociable and not highly sociable people do use and create social media connections differently at the very begining of their usage but negative side effects of long-term focus on social media only seem to be similar in both groups. So drop in empathy, autistic like traits even in non-autistic people, decrease in need for privacy or respect for the privacy of others, higher risk of depressive episode etc.

Entire human life experience can actually be traumatizing. We come to this world during labour. Do you have any idea how traumatizing it is? So much that human body has a good reason to make sure that most people do not recall this experience on conscious level. So unless a human makes an effort to grow some resillience to various stimuli and experiences, and in most cases it's possible and it's "learnable skill" than yes, agreed, human life is just one long crazy traumatizing ride.

1. Lack of sleep...very important. 2. Lack of friends/interaction with REAL people. 3. Sedentary Lifestyle / Lack of exercise. (From a different part of her interview, she emphasises the benefit of aerobic exercise on brain health) 4. Alcohol (even moderate, because it disrupts DEEP sleep) 5. Social media (particularly for kids) - its not the same as real social interaction and "... your brain can tell the difference. " 6. Too much screen time ("Can you be alone with your thoughts / focus?" - the basis of meditation and mindfulness, beneficial for potential/brain plasticity/ "joy") 7. Smoking /Processed foods (obvious less than healthy points)
