@@zippymcfearson2776 I’m about to send this for a couple days on my grand Cherokee thermostat housing wish me luck brother I’ll keep you updated the i6 will be ok
We dont always have the right stuff to do a repair so it's nice to know alternatives and I never seen that tape trick before, good video thanks for posting......
I collect antique outboard boat motors and I use this method to make gaskets. You can grease one side of the gasket if you want to disassemble the motor later without destroying it. I also keep pinking and cuticle shears and hole punches for cutting them out.
Why didn't you use an oil to make the template? It would be easy and quick. Just put a little oil on the the face of the device and print it on the cereal paper.
A wise old mechanic taught me a neat trick. Place the gasket material/cornflake packet then get a small hammer and hit the edge of the part your are trying to seal and it will cut a neat cut out of it.
I've seen many ppl tighten screws/bolts down to the point of stripping or breaking. Telling someone to hit it with a hammer will definitely ensure them heading to the part store for a new part and gasket after breaking their old one.
The way I learned at college was to put the flange on thr cardboard first then draw around it and cut it out. Put the cut out version back on to the flange and the make like the holes using a small ball peen hammer. So much quicker
thanks this might help me get my atv running, there is a big open hole where my 2 stroke oil pump was(its broken). so now i can screw a plate and a cheapo gasket on and get the engine running. will be mixing oil into the fuel untill my new part arrives in a month or 2
Next gaskets for plane parts since all rotary engines are dead but some rotary piston engines are still living because a few restoration museums are making them live longer.
Probably better to try this idea with thick aluminium foil for a 50cc head gasket but make sure there is sufficient clearance so that the piston will not hit the head .
Before I understood anything, I saw that gaskets were basically a type of cardboard so I made some out of cereal boxes lol. I had an old scooter that needed a new cylinder gasket. 😂 It ran just fine for a few years actually. But now I can afford proper gaskets so I wait a couple weeks for them to ship instead of doing this but it is always good to know this kind of thing in an emergency.
@@richardprice5978 oh! You missunderstood. Yes it actually works. It's works as well as any other paper gasket in the short term, it just doesn't last near as long as actual gasket material. I use it all the time as a temp gasket until the new one ships from Amazon.
@@DobleWhiteAndStabley ok im not buying into it working but your not the only person said it works so maybe you guys are right, i just don't plan on doing that, thanks for the tech tips. and no im not using this for customer cars fixes so for the next wise guy broke DK in line the answer is no im not using your box come back with cash or the rite gaskets
didnt work for me on my 250cc engine. might have been my fault but im notsure long life milk cartons work really god for me, they have to have the shiny metalic side facing the inside of the engine. thanks anyways.
Hi, is it ok to use this home made gasket for cylinder and head cylinder on a scooter engine? this part is very hot and the gaskets are pretty strong, so this is why I am asking. Thanks
I've made it for a cylinder head before out of cardboard. It works, but I'd highly suggest using copper or aluminum if you are going to make a head gasket. A simple cylinder gasket is fine to use cardboard for.
Flexoid gasket material is fine to use on timing covers and water pumps, even on a real badass V8 big block. PS, sounds awesome 👏 breathing out of flowmaster mufflers.
Cornflakes has a myth associated with them that it was created to stop masturbation. Well, it does not work. I know this first hand, no pun intended. However, now I have a new use for the box. I will be trying this with a leaky waterpump. Let's hope it works better than the cornflakes worked for... Well, let's just hope the gasket works.
I'm not a fan of Kellogs Corn Flakes. They're alright I suppose but corn can be hard on older teeth. None of the kids here like them either. Can I use Uncle Tobys Vita Brits packaging instead?
Actually it does work I used it on my exhaust manifold header. Trick is to use permatex spray copper jus double it up working perfectly for me it's now 8 months
There is a flaw in all these “emergency” gasket deals isn’t it? An emergency (as most of us think of it) is when you are in the middle of nowhere and your parts store is either not near, closed or just don’t have your part. If you are in the middle of nowhere and need a gasket what makes you think you will be able to find a store to buy CF, eat them (no waste) and make your gasket? I see the creative aspect of it. I do not see the $ saving element
Tax2Me probably a magazine or scrap piece of paper kicking about in the car somewhere! I once made a Water pump fast for my car out of a fashion mag front page and used Vaseline as the sealant. It held up for 30k miles before I refurbished the whole engine.
The point is that knowing how to do it is better than not and piece of card is far easier to source than the correct gasket or even gasket paper. There are literally thousands of things you could use such as the box from a takeaway burger or the front page of the handbook in the glove box.
This time on frum rags to riches , The corn flake box gasket company inc. How one man went from leaking out oil to leaking out mega quid! Neighbors said he wondered about auto mechanic shops peddling corn flakes gaskets. "we all used to laugh at him, calling him flakey "! Look who's flakey now mates! 😎🏰🚤💍💎👑💵💰💶💷📠.
