In Australia all laundry rooms have a laundry tub (ie a large sink) in addition the washing machine and dryer. This is a great place to tip dirty water. And in fine weather clothes are dried on the outside clothes line.

I had an appliance repair technician tell me to never use the self clean feature of my oven. He said that there are certain parts in the back panel of stoves that often melt or are otherwise destroyed by the extreme high heat of the self cleaning function. He also said that he saw many stoves needing repairs because of this. I trust this technician because he has serviced many appliances for me over the years, and has never given me bad advice. All of his tips have been so helpful. If he says don't use self-clean, you can be sure it is for good reason. Personally, I use baking soda moistened with dish liquid, give it some "dwell time", and then scrub away with a cold Scrub Daddy sponge. Just be sure to rinse very well. And then rinse again.

I am not surprised by what the technician said. I used the self clean function once and it burned 2 spots on the top of the door . It didn't seem to do any actual cleaning inside the oven either. I thought I might be able to get the spots off, or at least fade the discoloration but, nope. Very disappointing. I don't know if my experience was just a freak thing or not, but I'm not taking any chances. Thanks for sharing.

I really appreciate the environmental spin on this video. More people need to know that there are some natural ways to clean that work amazing and save you lots of money. I do disagree with the home steam cleaners. I do agree that the professionals do a much more effective job, but as a person who keeps dogs, I'd be calling the guy about once a week! The home machines get up far more than I can by hand. It gets us through until we call to have all the carpets shampooed. Also, I'm not sure what my 3 year old stainless steel fridge is made with but my norwex cloth or vinegar solution leaves it streaky. The only thing that works is the actual stainless steel cleaner. Luckily I found an environmental one here in Canada. Myni, which is very similar to the American brand Blueland. I love your videos! Keep on sharing that environmental message! Our planet needs some love these days.

My appliance repair guy (who we’ve used for decades and trust) says never use the self cleaning setting on ovens. It shortens the life of the oven and he is busiest just before thanksgiving when everyone cleans their ovens before the big day and then their ovens go out. As far as carpet cleaners (not a steamer - not sure of difference) but as someone with pets, the amount of hair and dirt that is removed is incredible. Professionals are pricey and I can shampoo myself several times a year. I gifted both my grown kids a carpet cleaner when they both moved out to their own places. I agree with all the other recommendations! I do love your content!😊

I have memories of my mom cleaning our linoleum kitchen floors with ammonia and crying because the fumes were so awful. She used other harsh products like bleach that did a lot of damage to her lungs too. Thankfully, she's still with us but she went from a diagnosis of asthma (that wasn't responsive to inhalers, telling me it was just straight up lung damage) in her middle years, to being very susceptible to pneumonia and now diagnosed with COPD as a senior. I learned some good tips from her as well, like using a cloth with soapy water instead of spraying a cleaner that gets inhaled. My daughter used to make fun of me for being "crunchy" but, now that she has a bunny, she understands the need for toxin-free cleaners. 🐇 My journey toward becoming an eco minimalist has had some bumps along the way and I'm not quite there yet. I thought I was doing such a great thing switching to laundry detergent sheets but they contain a type of plastic called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) that, similar to laundry and dishwasher pods, is not completely biodegradable everywhere. A certain bacteria has to be present in the wastewater treatment process to fully break it down. I had also purchased a bulk supply of microfiber cloths before I learned that they shed microplastics that aren't totally removed from our tap water but I will use these things up before moving on to better options. A final thought to anyone else who is interested in making more environmentally friendly choices - try your best to avoid synthetic fabrics in your clothing and linens (acrylic, polyester fleece, etc.) because of that same issue of shedding microplastics when laundered.

I've never used oven cleaner, the best thing I've found is just to use a paste as soon as the mess is made, before it gets baked on. It might be a pain to do it right now, but it beats all the scrubbing that it takes later. I'm sitting home having a day to myself while my husband is at his sister's house. I don't know what she uses to cover the smells in her house, but something that takes away your ability to smell anything but that stuff for 3 days is not good and I refuse to go back over there unless I don't have any choice. When my husband gets home, he knows he has to go straight to the shower bc I can't stand the smell that's attached to him. I'm also looking for an alternative to cascade. I'm with you on the antibacterial soap.

If self-cleaning ovens do more harm than good, why the heck do the manufacturers make them with that function? I read an earlier comment that the appliance repairman is pretty busy before Thanksgiving because everyone self-cleans the over before turkey day and then something malfunctions?? Next time I have to buy a stove, I'll remember to skip the ones with the self-cleaning function. Luckily, I live in an apartment, and the stove was new when I moved in, but didn't have all the bells and whistles. Looks like one of those bells or whistles isn't actually necessary.

Enzyme cleaner for pipes gets organic stuff like grease, hair, etc. Great for maintaining pipes. Zep works really well for me and it's used in restaurants, too. *All* essential oils are bad for pets, especially cats! The disposable toilet wand cleaners are the best, no comparison to at least 20 other options for cleaning the rim and the flush hole area. The off-brand ones you can get are very cheap. The same detergent that is ok for delicates and workout wear is the same you can use for babies-the key is that the detergent is a RESIDUE-FREE type of detergent.

Since we have a bird, I completely agree with you on many of the products. Self-cleaning ovens and oven spray cleaners can kill your pet bird. I did want to add that if you have pet birds, please do not use essential oils in an oil diffuser. Not only do I have a pet bird, but I also work in guinea pig rescue, and essential oils are very toxic to small animals. They are probably fine if you have a dog, but please avoid them with any type of small animal such as guinea pigs, hamsters, chinchillas and rabbits. My husband definitely agrees with you on drain cleaners. He said they are so bad for your pipes. We seldom have a problem, but if we do, he uses a snake. When you were talking about the toilet tank, it reminded me of when my friend's husband put bleach into all three of their toilet tanks. It completely destroyed all the workings of the toilet. They had to replace all three of their toilets. When she asked him why he did that, he said he always heard that you could use bleach to clean your toilet. She told him, that's in your toilet bowl, not your toilet tank. That was an expensive mistake.

Very good video! Another reason I don’t use laundry pods is for the times I do a smaller load. I like to have control over how much detergent I use. And I haven’t used antibacterial soap for ages for the reason you mentioned. Ordinary soap does a great job of cleaning hands and washing away germs. Must caution people about using vinegar on stone and granite countertops - will eventually eat away at the finish.

@Marilyn-np2xh

Agree on all these! Just a few comments. I never use the self cleaning feature in my electric oven, I’m too afraid of the high heat! If I’m baking something I think is going to spill over, I put a cookie sheet underneath it. Or I have read that you can get silicone pads to put on the bottom of your oven, since now they say not to put aluminum foil on the bottom of your oven. As for floor cleaners, I do use the Bona cleaner for hard surfaces on my sheet vinyl in my bathrooms. But I don’t use that on my LVP flooring because, yes, it does leave a film! So for my LVP I just use water and a microfiber mop. And for cleaning toilet tanks, a word of caution about using vinegar. I put some vinegar in a toilet tank with a toilet that wasn’t used, and a couple weeks later part of the rubber on the bolts on the bottom of the tank flaked off! The acid in the vinegar ate away at it, so I’m not sure about your citric acid if that might do it too. But be careful about parts in your tank that any type of acid could deteriorate.

Our LVP installers recommended Bona. I think it’s horrible. I was using it weekly to wash my floors with the Bona microfiber. I used a white towel to wipe up a water spill a day after washing the floor and the white towel was so dirty. I switched to Mrs Meyer concentrate diluted with warm water or Dawn and warm water.

You are supposed to remove your oven racks when using self clean. Normally I use the regular ( lye based) cleaner on the racks, place them on an old shower rack, or newspaper, on the back deck, hose them off later. I have been cleaning for 45 years, nothing out performs the lye based sprat, or brush on cleaner. Obviously read the precautions and follow, it is LYE BASED. It is very low/alkaline on the Ph scale, you need some vinegar on hand to rinse your arms with if you get over spray on your arms. You will feel a bit of stinging.

As far as " Essential Oils "... you have to be careful, some are not good for Asthma, can cause Headaches, and some are toxic to pets... even to Pet birds and fish. I am a former Professional Organizer/ Housekeeper .. I would often see THE NEED for a heavy duty cleaner ( even Lye, for ovens ) .. it depends on the Level of Dirty that one is dealing with. I n e v e r use( or used ) the " Self Ckean " on an oven... its not a good thing , whoever csne up eith this.... Not good. ..people should not use it. Dawn dish soap/ Vinegar / etc are all fine for certain things.... but its not always going to work for every type of cleaning needed.

We recently replaced our beyond repair gas wall oven. Unfortunately the broiler on the new gas oven is electric and on the inside of the main oven cavity. Our old wall oven had a broiler drawer under the oven portion and used gas to broil. I will not use the broiler feature on our new oven because I’ll never get it or the oven cavity clean. I actually wipe out my oven with warm water once a week to avoid using the self clean function or any oven cleaner. I also have a front load washer and didn’t know I could use laundry sheets. Finally, powered dishwasher soap always cakes up in our dishwasher. One more: how can anyone use Febreeze on their furniture or their clothes? I can’t imagine the residue that leaves behind.

Laundry pods are really bad with front loader washing machines - the covering dissolves into gunk that coats the machine inside and makes a mess, traps dirt, and that leads to mildew, etc. We have to run a cup of vinegar with every single load to prevent mildew. Not sure the laundry soap sheets are any better, though, and I don't want my teens spilling powder all over the place.

@PotentialofHydrogenClean
@PotentialofHydrogenClean 29 дней назад
@@tarynmaria_ My point was you mentioned oven cleaners were dangerous then suggested the self-cleaning function. Most oven cleaner fumes suck (and if you clean frequently enough, you don't even need oven cleaner), but the self cleaning function is way worse than even oven cleaner (unless you mix it with something or run the self cleaning function after using oven cleaner as you can never go back to self cleaning safely once you've had strong chemicals in there). If you have heavy duty carbon build up, you need something with a high pH (preferably using one of the 8 strong bases) to remove it. No elbow grease is getting that off with anything near pH neutral even dish soaps up to pH 9 won't cut it. But, I understand some people really hate strong acids and strong bases. So, they can use self cleaning and cross their fingers it goes well or use a cleaner too weak to remove the carbon and get it as good as they can. It was when you suggested dish soap on flooring (without specifying the type of floor) where I checked out. You advocate against using a strong base (oven cleaner) in favor of self cleaning which can break ovens and start fires but then when a pH neutral cleaner (floor cleaner is almost always neutral), is best, you say use dish soap. There are very few pH neutral dish soaps. Most are around 8-9, which can damage some types of flooring over time. Some people will even tell you to only clean them with water (perfectly neutral) to avoid potential damage. As long as you are not cleaning tile with an acid (that eats grout), you can throw almost anything alkaline on tile. Other floors aren't as lucky (or are more lucky if you're like me and refuse to allow grout into your house). The point is high pH won't hurt tile, but it can hurt wood and stone (yes even a pH 9 dish soap over time). That is what floor cleaners are for. Maybe I am being too hard on you and this isn't a cleaning channel. If it is, I just hope you research this moving forward before offering more bad advice. Instead of dish soap for everything, use the right cleaner for the right stain. For sensitive surfaces or simple messes, go pH neutral. Inorganic stains need acids, and organic stains need bases. Heavy organic stains, like carbon, need a strong base. Otherwise, it will not come out. I'm not trying to come off preachy. My guilty pleasure is watching cleaning videos, so I don't clean things in my house that are already clean. I see a lot of bad advice online, and I usually do not say anything. I won't comment again for fear I've already said too much here.

4 STEPS TO UNCLOG YOUR DRAIN AND CLEAN YOUR DISPOSAL WITH BOILING WATER, BAKING SODA & VINEGAR: STEP 1: Start by pouring a pot of boiling water down the drain. STEP 2: Next, pour a cup of baking soda and 1 cup water/1 cup vinegar solution. STEP 3: Cover with the drain plug and wait 5 to 10 minutes. STEP 4: Pour boiling water down the drain again. The bubbling reaction from the baking soda and vinegar helps to loosen the drain clog, and the boiling water in step 4 helps remove it from your pipes. Vinegar is a good cleaning product and iinhibits mold growth but should never be used on natural stone, it will etch and dull it.
