In the pitch-black night, stung by jellyfish, choking on salt water, singing to herself, hallucinating ... Diana Nyad just kept on swimming. And that's how she finally achieved her lifetime goal as an athlete: an extreme 100-mile swim from Cuba to Florida -- at age 64. Hear her story.

I have watched this TED talk over and over and over again since 2 years ago. At that time, I was training for Hood to Coast, which is a 200 miles relay race, from the Mt. Hood to Seaside, Oregon. In this race, all teams need to run continuously. The race started, I remember I was running in the mountain with no cellphone service, it was 2:00AM, with the moonlight illuminated the road, the forest, and myself. The distance between runners were so long that we couldn't see one another. But I felt a strong light behind me, that was one of my competitors catching up, he was fast and over took me easily. What I could do was do the best to follow him but not slow down. Around 15 minutes later, he was half a miles in front of me. At that moment, the image of Diana Nyad swimming across the ocean floated in my mind, yes, Never ever give up! I began to speed up and short the distance with that fast runner...There was one and half mile left to the exchange point, I caught up with him, I over took him and arrived at the exchange point 2 minutes earlier that him. Today, I train for Boston Marathon. Every moment when I suffer from trainning, I think of Diana Nyad and her feat and her inspiring speech, thank you! Never ever give up, you could chase your dreams at any ages and you're never too old!

I've heard a couple people say that what she did was "selfish" and that it cost an enormous amount of money just to help one person accomplish her life's dream. Yes, it did cost a TON of money but to say that it was "selfish" is so, well, I would say "ignorant" that it's downright sad. Ms. Nyad is an incredible inspiration to anyone who has a life's dream of their own, no matter what it is. And, specifically I would imagine that there's a lot of "older" women who will receive an enormous amount of inspiration from what she did. I'm a 59 year old male and I find what Ms. Nyad did just amazing - and inspirational. If I met her I would consider it a significant honor to be able to shake her hand. Her "Look what I can do." is really "Look what everyone can do" if they'll only keep on trying and never give up. Mission accomplished Ms. Nyad - Job well done! Enjoy your rest and all the accolades that come with your accomplishment: you've earned them all!
@tokitobe2450
@tokitobe2450 7 месяцев назад
It's interesting that people think that. I don't think it's selfish; maybe if i was super poor, I would have. But I see people give up on themselves past age 40, and make themselves so small at age 60. It is what kills the human spirit, causes Alzheimers, causes people to live unfulfilling, dreamless lives. THis woman putting herself out there, challenging herself, showing herself 'in her prime' at 64 really affects people's psyche. I am no longer afraid of growing old thanks to people like Diana Nyad. It's subtle, almost subconscious, but she and others like her helped imprint that people don't have to give up and think of themselves as failures and losers if they don't achieve everything by age 30. That we can still be curious and expansive well into old age. It is a great contribution.

Absolutely mind blowing! I was captivated by her every word. Two major lessons to be learned here. The first and most obvious is that you should never give up in pursuit of a dream. And the second is that no matter how beautiful the offering you can never please everyone. At the time of this comment there are over 400 dislikes of this video! That's insane.

As Ms. Nyad states, even a solo swimmer can't reach the distant shore without a little help from her friends. Yes, personal commitment goes a long way towards achieving difficult goals but "no woman is an island" at the end of the day. Please, people, give each other a helping hand when they need it. You will receive the same kind of help, in return, if you're very lucky and extremely stubborn.

If we are passionate on the things that matters in our lives and apply the principle of never give up, there will be a high chance of achieving things that will contribute to our overall happiness. The speaker was wise enough to let us understand the value of doing things that matters in you and the power of believing it and not giving up on whatever circumstances that we are about to face in our journey.

Giving up is how you decide to try something new. You must drop unproductive methods to move forward. Some activities are not productive. Also, failing is instructive. Failure is sometimes more instructive than success. Diana's success is notable, but her failures were impressive, too. "The Journey itself was worthwhile taking" - nice.

you should see her previous video where she said she will do it and here she stands today when she has done it. She is the one who said it on ted and did it. Respect for her.

I love the pasión she is able to transmit telling her life story. It touched my heart and I am so motivated because she is the great example of achievement. I will buy her book and find my way to accomplish my dream.

Gosh! Relatable, funny, encouraging, real, inspirational, moving and above all, hopeful that a way will be found through struggles. Persevere, be bold and confidence will guide you through the challenge. It feels like most people would appreciate listening and internalizing what Diana has to share. "Find a way!" You can do this!
