Located inside a former public housing block in the quiet but central neighborhood of Spaarndammer in Amsterdam, Tiny Loft is home to owner/architects Peter Canisius and Eline Degenaar of Studio Canisius Degenaar. Key to the overall design was to connect the attic storage, previously only accessible by a common exterior staircase, to the rest of the apartment by way of an internal staircase and changing the storage into the bedroom. The internal staircase is housed inside a central floor-to-ceiling oak veneer storage wall, which also extends into the bedroom forming the balustrade with integrated shelves. The storage wall consists of plenty of closed as well as open storage spaces on the edges, accessible from multiple sides. The new kitchen was shifted out to the open space which includes a combined dining room, freeing up space to transform the old kitchen space into an office. Living, sleeping, cooking and working are now all situated close to window openings, making these spaces feel light and airy.

@@cassuaris Yes, I was amazed when visiting Amsterdam to see how very narrow the older houses are, and how tall! Many still have the 'hoisting beam' (hijsbalk) on the gable. In Paris, stairs are not so narrow, but even so they often use a 'monte-meuble', 'sort of a motorized ladder with a platform, to carry heavy furniture to upper floors.

I agree, there are a lot of houses on this channel that compromise a lot of practicality for aesthetics. Like that one house that does not have a closet because the owner prefers a large sunroom, that's why the only storage space in that house is through a little door (1 feet) in the living room that they must crawl through.

@@meliskaraoglan9318 Maybe, but I don't think you should sacrifice storage space for an unusually large sunroom when you already have a reasonably sized daylight in the middle of the house just for a bonsai tree. There's also no way that's 49sqm. My old apartment here in Amsterdam was virtually identical to their downstairs - mine didn't have the attic, and mine was 50sqm. This with the attic has to be at least 65/70sqm. It would have been so much more interesting to see them build out one floor along the same design concept but include a bedroom, as this basic layout/apartment is extremely common here - pretty much the standard (minus the attic, which is very rare and you'd be extremely lucky to find a place with two floors of any kind at this price).
@lizabetke

@@obscurazone Hmmm.... that living room seems pretty narrow. Its seems to be 2-2,5 meters wide and just a little longer than the couch. So 10m2 for that space alone would be generous. Same for that tiny bedroom. Double for the kitchen area (also generous). Thats 40. 9 left for the bathroom. It could be true. They try to make it as spacious as possible on camera.

I keep my tv the exact same way they do: On a low simple shelf with wheels. I prefer it like that because: - can wheel the tv away to not have the it be the centerpiece ("altar") of the living room. Both visually, and for it to not catch my attention. - And when having guests, it makes the living room more flexible that I am able to remove the tv. - Plus it allows my son to move the tv when he plays PS: The apartment is too small for him to have a large tv in his room. And even the living room is small, and to avoid people constantly crossing in front of the tv, because it is in a main walkpath of the apartment, he can pull the tv closer to the couch.

It's a great layout, especially the fitted storage which is ALWAYS the main problem in Amsterdam apartments, but unless you are extremely lucky to get on the housing ladder and somehow stumble upon a place where you get the top floor and attic space (rarely if ever) this redesign is the stuff of pipe dreams. Hardly anyone in this city could do this plan at this budget, and unfortunately we are left scrambling around fighting amongst eachother for pretty much everything that comes to market. The housing situation here is absolutely diabolical - at crisis point, and the costs are now insane. I would have been really fascinated, to see how they would have designed that place WITHOUT the attic, how they would have gotten a bedroom and that storage into the main space, as indeed this then could have become a blueprint for the rest of us living in virtually identical spaces. It was a good episode, but honestly...having lived here for so long, kinda frustrating as it is the sort of size/price two floor apartment that just isn't readily available We mostly live like sardines. On one floor. Good for them though!

I’m curious about the m2 of the storage. Maybe 8-10? That makes the main floor around 40m2? Our flat (1905 in Cremerbuurt) is 50m2 on the second floor with an office in the storage (4th) accessible by stairs. Not as convenient access but definitely useful space. It works for us. Do you have any storage? Or just your main space?

I feel like all these tiny apartments are always the same. basically the idea is that you use one room as several rooms and the walls are always closets and cupboards. Some of the stuff isn't really thought through like having a tiny TV far away that is on the floor. Nobody would use that because you neck would hurt after couple of minutes. I feel that could have been done easily better, e.g. with a projector and a screen that slides out of the ceiling. Also if you are old, this apartment is no option for you, because you can't really get around that well, especially the stairs .

I totally understand that this channel is about living comfortably in a tiny space, but just to give you some perspective... At the time of this writing, a 50m2 appartment in the same area costs about 500k euro's, that's about $525k. Just ten miles outside of Amsterdam the same size appartment is only $230k. If you have $525k to spend then at the same 10miles outside Amsterdam you can get a 250m2 proper house with a garden, a garage and a private parking spot *AND* still have $100k left over to decorate it. In short, this tiny loft costs $100k more than a proper house that is 5 times the size. Also: for the people praising the design: remember that the people who lived here when it was new had no money and usten lived there with a family and birthcontrol wasn't really a thing back then it was often a mother, father and 4-8 children. They managed do live there without all the "clever design" and certainly without the half a million that was spent just buying thins place, let alone the money that was spent decorating it, they didn't just hammer a few planks in there, this is a casestudy by a design bureau.

Best, best & best!! This house is my utmost favorite!! I have been watching tiny home videos for about a year now and THIS IS THE ONLY ONE I COULD ACTUALLY LIVE IN! Absolutely stunning.❤️

What a smart and beautiful apartment, my favourite yet. Very practical and relaxing. I could easily see myself living here.

I love this space. My only concern is the decision to put the laundry machine in the office, which defeats the purpose of being able to work in quiet.

something ive heard lately is how the new minimalism has a fear of color. dont know abt them, but I cannot work with the sunlight shinning in my face. also, thats a LOT of wine

Looking forward to part 2 of this video where they construct additional space to be able to live in.

Very nice. Simple but pleasing to the eye. I'd totally live there. However, I would mount the TV on the wall, because looking down like that is not sustainable for a long time. I'd also get a comfier office chair. Bit other than that, kudos.

Can we acknowledge the facet that 49 sqm is not tiny¿ This is an average 2+1 family space in Europe. Go below 30sqm and we can start talking

Ohh , the so ever pragmatic and frugal Dutch. Where else could this come from ? They might come accross as staid and boring, but they sure as heck can solve many of the World's problems ! Good footage.

500-600 sqft is a normal 1 bedroom sized apartment lol. Still a very well designed apartment though

It looks nice but a couple of things bother me. First the entrance, the front door looks a little "shabby" and could use some paint. The "silent" officespace" is not that silent anymore when the washing-machine is running. It all looks a little "boxed" to me, even though there are less doors. For an open space, it's not that open. The last thing would be the price, it's priceless and this i ment it too expensive to rent or buy. It's Amsterdam and almost central Amsterdam. This made the little 2 person apartment very expensive. Another thing is that the couple could "test" the layout at forehand and that is something normal people can't do.

I wouldn't call 49sqm tiny. It's a spacious apartment (for european standards). 22-29 sqm is tiny

This one isn't doing it for me. I wouldn't like to have all my clothes stored downstairs like that. Would've liked more storage in the bedroom like floor to ceiling fitted wardrobe where the hanging rail is. Also the bathroom is also far from the bedroom. Getting ready in the morning would be a faff. Also I lolled when they said they put the washing machine in the office and then called the office a 'quiet space'.

very nice. I must say however, certainly not huge but I wouldn't call it "tiny" by any means. it has multiple rooms for instance.

There's so many good ideas anybody can take from this space. But the only thing I didn't understand is the size of the bed. For 2 people it seemed way too small.

Amazing apartment and would love to live here, however, the toilet/shower left me wanting more. It looks super uncomfortable in there.
