Nothing compares to Shimano engineering. 29 years of Mt biking and Shimano always seems magnitudes better than the competition, as far as I'm concerned.
Not for me. Whenever I had anything from Shimano it was a disasters. Last case is brake rotors RT76, which were bent just being new! And no one of two mechanics, to which I brought them, managed to true the rotors. So I ditched the new bent Shimano's rotors and bought Sram Centerline and now having no problem at all! And it's not the single case when Shimano sucks!
And of course there are tons of companies that make way better stuff than Shimano. For instance Compagnolo chains Record work pretty well on mtb and endure several times longer (on tarmac this chain can be used up to 10 000 kilometres). Shimano hubs with crappy bulk bearing is a trash, hubs from DT Swiss with decent bearings are way better. Hope brakes are way better. I can list examples more and more. Shimano is mediocre company producing genetic crap.
@@drewbarrow5670 No doubt there are other great product out there. Just don't know of any other complete packages. For the money, the XT group (minus hubs) has the best performance, serviceability and durability overall. It's very easy to wrench on and tune by the home mechanic. There are a ton of little features and details that give impression of thoughtfully engineered products.
Thank you man! We're trying slowly... With awesome people like you sharing our content and recommending us to your friends, hopefully we'll get there one day!
5:33: This changes everything. I get chain skips while solidly in gear on X01 and Ultegra, and have snapped just about everything except cranks. I'm really excited for Hyperglide.
I'm more of a XT guy and don't want to spend more on XTR. But if I want to save more by mix-match, I can go down to SLX crank and cassette leaving the rest XT. Shimano 4 piston MT520 brakes can save some cost without noticable compromise (at least for me 😉) I'm now eagerly waiting for my polygon siskiu N9 (full XT, 29er with TRP slate 4 pot brakes aluminum enduro bike) Thanks for the great video mate 🤟🏻🤟🏻 Well explained!
Tested the xtr 12 speed in Utah. I hate to admit this but I tried to break it by shifting under load. Heavy pedaling up a steep hill and shifting up and down and up and down and it did it all perfect. Only way I’ve seen one break was two years ago when it got snapped by an aggressive stick laying on the trail.
My bikes have Shimano everything. There was a time when made in Japan was avoided. Not anymore. Of course I'm a little biased being half Japanese. Great video. Aloha. 😎🤙
Shimano got lapped by SRAM on 12 speed and are now playing catch up. I'm not anti Shimano at all, but this is how you lose market share - not paying attention to your competition. Then 2 years later come out with a competitive product, but then limit the ability to adopt your product by making it costly and proprietary in wheel/hub options. You can give these away to racers all you want, but Shimano needs shipping volume from the Joe Weekenders and that will take a while under these circumstances. I just bought a new bike and a critical "must have" for me was 12 speed. I'm now riding SRAM for the first time ever. I'm not buying another drive train or bike for some time and I'm guessing there's a lot of riders (market potential) in the same position. 2-3 years from now when adoption of this drive train catches on, SRAM will be 2 or 3 generations forward. With upgrade paths. Seems like Shimano was caught sleeping at the wheel here. I wish them luck though. Competition is good for any market, as are choices. We need options like this in the market. I hope Shimano has more good stuff up their sleeves, they're going to need them.
Yeah, this might be the time the "Empire Strikes Back". Bikes with XT 12 speed are starting to be delivered right now. If it is true that the new XT 12 speed Hyper Glide Plus is as smooth as SRAM's XO1 Eagle, that is huge. I'll have to demo a bike with it on. XO1 Eagle is so good already, it is hard for me to imagine something even better, but it will lock up a bit if you push it under load. I have always preferred Shimano XT brakes over the SRAM Guides of various types. The SRAM brakes just feel mushy and not as sporty or precise as the Shimano XTs
Swing and a miss with the new cassette standards and not handing out the licenses to companies that don't provide OE hubs to bike brands like Hope...... Just a bad way to do business. I love Shimano brakes and cranks and will still buy them, but not the drivetrain.
Thank god Shimano came out with a 12 speed, now maybe we can get complete high end bikes with Shimano components again.. I’m not knocking sram but everything about Shimano is smoother and more durable, I prefer the xt 10 speed and slx brakes on my trek stache over the nx eagle 12 and code r brakes on my stumpjumper evo. Even the levers on the sram are sharp and take skin off knuckles without gloves. The eagle cassette sounds like it’s going to explode if you shift under power.
Usually I would say product reviews like these are one sided and gimmicky BS, but it is Shimano, a brand I have been using for decades and has proven itself to me many times.
I think it's kind of hilarious that this newly designed brake lever with "2 points of contact" is being touted as this great new feature, as if it's some marvel of engineering. Seems like it's a solution to a problem that didn't exist imo, and if that problem did exist then the clamp for the previous version was very poorly designed and all they're doing is fixing a mistake. marketing in the bike industry is fucking ridiculous
I think it makes a huge difference. Ive had both versions and if you can get more stiffness out of the brake lever, why not? That doesnt mean it was a problem before, its just better now.
The new XT and XTR have a new servo wave track in the lever to change feel and less free stroke. They also have less of the "on-off" feeling that used to be so polarizing.
@@bbarker5766 That is on our list this fall! September-ish. We're publishing the full dates on our Patreon page in hopes of meeting up at parks and places in between to ride and meet with our Patrons! www.patreon.com/theloamwolf
Im confused. I have nonboost frame (GT Sensor Carbon Expert 2014) with 12x142 Hope Pro 2 Evo (Im waiting for microspline hub, which will be avaible soon). I want go from 3x10spd (24-32-42 + 11-34) to 1x12spd (36 + 10-51). I know that new XT cranks has 3 variants (8100,8120,8130), which has different Q-Factor and chainline. The 8100 crank variant says that it is for O.L.D. 142mm and 148mm together - but it has 52mm chainline. Isnt 52mm chainline boost? Can I go with this cranks or not? My actual triple (FC-M780) has chainline 50mm. BTW: XT 2x12 cranks has chainline 48,8mm....
the 3-by drivetrain on my road bike makes me want to commit toaster bath. I would kill for a one-by that could hit 35 mph really I want a mountain bike, but I'm looking for lost craigslist gold before I buy.
EXACTLY !!!!! XT DI 2 AND MICRO SPLINE XT THERE GOES THE MOST AFFORDABLE DEPENDABLE GROUPSET SINCE 83!!!!!!! SHIMANO FINALLY CAUGHT UP TO SRAM PRICING I GUESS ILL BUY SOME MORE SPARE 11 SPEED (NON BOOST) (8000) STUFF SO I CAN LAUGH AT EVRYONE WHO IS LAUGHING AT ME !!!!!!!!
Neither, i follow the loam wolf but on this occasion it seemed to be more of a promotion than a real assessment. Put it this way throw a load of wet grit at the cogs and you'll still be cursing at the grinding noise and crappy shifts. Im going to try a pinion gearbox soon and weigh up the pros and cons
Perfectly fine for you to have that opinion, but the new 12 speed XT and XTR have a lot of other great features like hyperglide+ that make it worth buying. There's no need to be afraid of change. Keep your 11 speed until it wears out, then move up and enjoy an extra gear and a host of other improvements when you're ready.

The Loam Wolf Thanks for your response. Solid one. As a mountain bike enthusiast preparing to buy a new one for the new season, yes - I would be willing to pay a subscription if I would somehow have the certainty that the reviews are not biased. My only general problem is, like I mentioned in my first reply, the viewer/consumer has no way of being certain that the reviewer is not influenced by money or goods. I‘m not saying you are, but it‘s just so commonly practiced I personally don‘t know which reviews to take serious anymore.
hmmmmm XTR OR XT ? HOW MUCH CASH U GOT !!!!!!! if u have to ask u cant afford it unless yer PRO !!!! i have a XT drivetrain on both my bikes, but i run a XTR shifter (poor mans XTR !!!!!! ) never felt the need to try SRAM !!!
@@maximilianlindner If it's not as flimsy as GX Eagle (I don't have NX but I guess it's even worse than GX), the cage doesn't hang as low and the grass cannot bend it then it's already better. If you consider that Shimano's 'shadow' rear mech doesn't stick out sideways like SRAM that's a bonus and also, the 10-45 cassette option as not everybody needs the dinner plate 50/51T. I had two bikes with GX Eagle and I upgraded one of them to 11 speed XT.
The shimano guy looks thoroughly unconvinced about the merits of his own product...sheesh, no wonder sram dislodged shimano as the default drivetrain option.
nic louw not for long I suppose... I’d rather see SLX than flimsy cheaply made GX/NX/SX Eagle on any bikes. Shimano 11 speed was/is still hands down better than GX/NX Eagle but marketing made people believe that since 12 is more than 11 it must be better too which is not really the case.
@@tamasvarga67 i wholeheartedly agree but, surely, Shimano should have a little more to say about it's most exciting launch in YEARS than dull marketing platitudes? I can't wait to see whether SLX and XT 12-sp are as good as the shimano groupsets of old. If they are even CLOSE, i am IN.
You gotta take a step back and remember not everyone likes to be on camera. Poor Nick was just trying to have dinner when we cornered him for an interview! Aha. We're very certain that shimano will now be far more present on OEM drivetrain spec. The customer demanded 12 speed and as a result SRAM won out because they offered it. Shimano has never been a company that rushes to meet trends.
