i'm a big fan of... and very good at....towing/reversing trailers and caravans etc too (just thought id mention that as my usual like and comment boost so more people see your channel)
Great day for you and review again, I am thinking about buying one but have always loved the Discovery.. what are your thoughts comparing them? I am a bit put off by the high insurance costs of late and the Toureg seems a good alternative..
Hello Peter. I really wanted a V10 Touareg when they came out but the price seemed just too far away for me then….it was a very special car above other VW’s but these days, it seems hard to make special cars that look clearly different from others in the same range….people are expressing surprise at £80,000 and ŷet that has become near enough “normal” for anything a shade upmarket and far beyond that for many others. The Touareg has always struggled with depreciation so maybe in 12 months at £59,995, it will be a bargain! I got used to reversing trailers when had one for house renovation work but that self park would have been useful at times! I once watched a farmer tow a big stock trailer full of sheep up a narrow lane towed by a basic Focus LX that was well covered in mud. He stopped…without a hesitation then reversed the whole thing through a narrow gate that was also on a steep slope upwards and then across the field and not a hedge touched! It was fascinating….so smooth, precise, quick and effortless…..yea he has done that hundreds of times but still clever planning! 😀😀😀P.S. Buy the Defender….even better and you look like Harry M !!😎😎😎😎
Thanks, I assumed it has, but was just wondering if the camera software had any software tricks to help line up the hitch, but based on camera’s make it so easy to
Really nice car and spot on review as always from Pete. I do wonder though what planet VW are on though when it comes to pricing. Lottery winner aside who has £80k plus for the R? I think the motor industry has a big wake up call coming soon on vehicle pricing.
Thanks Mr Ped good review this is my go to car , i will probably get that one next! when my current deal is up , has to be in L Blue with the tan interior , great family wagon !
Nice midlife tweak, like the new front and rear fascia changes and the tech updates. If I had the current version I don’t know wether I’d be highly motivated to get into this new model because it’s a pretty solid car before the tweaks but given there’s no price changes you can’t possibly argue this newest version, it’s a very nice vehicle indeed.
Yup two thumbs up! As always, you videos are spot on in every respect. Way back when, yes I could have used the technology for the parallel parking on my test, but I got it eventually. That is a beautiful vehicle indeed, and if someone wanted to give me one I’d gladly accept. All the best from Canada, Petrol. Cheers mate, safe driving.
I've always wondered if the vehicle owner or the manufacturer is liable in the event that the former's car damages another when using the parking assist app? The same applies to an accident caused by an electronic safety aid, such as unwarranted emergency brake application.
From personal experience, 28 miles tops in pure E mode. Mind you, you can tow 3.5tonnes in E mode and also drive at up to 80mph if you wish. The range is obviously affected by towing and speed though!
I had the previous version for a day on test. Very comfortable car. Plenty of poke from the 3L V6 diesel but oh my days the economy around town. hence they have a PHEV version.
I remember when I bought an Evoque back in 2016 we had a LR Experience Day thrown at Peckforton Castle. I remember the instructor summarising the drive saying we have been in low speed control all of the time, haven’t exceeded 6mph and the car has done all the work! Looks the same in the VW. Very enjoyable video Ped,, however the car looks too nice to be ploughing through mud all of the time! 👍😎
I’m with you on wanting to park/position stuff myself. If you can’t park you shouldn’t be driving. Same for trailer reversing. The old man has been towing for 40 years and still struggles to back the caravan 😂
Hi Peter, Would love a new Touareg R line. As a Touareg driver ( 2018 R line 50k miles) I would very much like to upgrade to the new model, but as in your previous post……who can afford new high value cars, I’m afraid I can’t. I guess I would be looking around £50/60k to trade in my current model, now being retired not an option. Great content, keep it coming.
Really nice car… lots of Landrovers do have that tow facility via the Terrain Response dial, however you do have to have a special decal on whatever you’re towing which is a shame… Great review as always Pete… 👍
Hi Ped, a very nice car, to expensive for me, but i do like it. 1 Malmesbury is where i went to school i know two years from 60 showing my age, 2 if you went near a villiage called "Minety" that was where i lived going to school and the last place in England before moving to Wales. as always enjoyed your video. Haydn.
Thx. Started the day with a new video notification from you and a Toaureg review! Great 👍🏼 But I will save see it for my coffeebreak later. It's a good day 😌
If you really want to be good at reversing a trailer, practice. And remember that you steer the trailer. (the car will always follow it). I would suggest that like the parallel parking feature after a few tries the trailer reverse gizmo will never be used. It's far too slow and clunky.
I have it on mine and I have never used it! Like you say, practice makes perfect - and usually the longer the trailer (or caravan), the easier it is to reverse.
Hi Pete what a cracking stunning car , build quality top class love the style and practicality and the R version with 460 bhp wow but the price over 80k that’s up against the new cayenne S with a V8 470 bhp having driven my brothers new Cayenne S I know if I had the money lol which one I’d bye the cayenne for such a big car handles like a dream and build quality is out of this world
@@MrAjjm65 I believe it’s the same 3.5Tons although my brother didn’t get a tow bar fitted it’s in the car manual spec. He’s specified options like rear wheel steering and chrono pkg and some special anti roll bar in conjunction. 48v system , the car handles like a go cart for such a big machine
In 2006 I owned a V10 diesel. I purchased it at a very good price because it needed a new gearbox. Following the gearbox I had it stage 2 mapped, it had over 1,000Nm of Torque. Lovely big SUV but fragile.... it ate discs, pads, prop shafts. I even managed to shear the bolts holding the flywheel...!!
Nice motor, Pete, but at that price point the Cayenne has one major advantage - the badge. (And subscribed to Nick, hope he can get over the 100K hump!).
Thank you, another excellent review. Impressive car, and the design update lifts the Toureg from the mundane to the stylish and purposeful (imo). Pity about too many functions being accessed using the enormous centre screen, especially in a vehicle that is clearly very capable offroad - climate control at the very least should be on buttons.
People making dumb comments due to lack of information about cars. The cost of the VW is competitive with Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Lexus GX. Conversely, the BMW X6 would be over 10k more and a RR Defender would be 1.5x as much. @16:55 no mention of camera forward or underside. Also, hill descent is still too fast. For that off-road test, the slower the better.
The colour scheme of the one he drives at the end, is beautiful. But I can guarantee that won’t be available in the UK (it’s LHD, so not for UK market no doubt). VW UK will only offer black and grey, and there won’t be an auxiliary heater option like there used to be. So it will probably be a Defender or RRS where British buyers still have the full range of options to spec.
That does seem very expensive. I used to love reversing when we had a caravan but likewise spent many an afternoon watching people fail dismally to park their caravan and could certainly see how trailer assist would help many people towing.
Just an FYI, the DVLA recently changed the legislation regarding trailers in response to the HGV driver shortage. Anyone with a car licence can now tow a trailer legally
These are clearly lovely cars but even allowing for inflation, they have steadily positioned themselves much further up market. The original Touareg started well under £30K in 2002 and you could purchase the base 2.5 diesel in 2004 with discounts for £25K even from Listers…… which is £35K in today’s money. Given the increased costs of finance, I wonder how it will all work out.
£30k in 2002 still works out to £53k today, so the increase isn’t that much, bearing in mind there are other models below which didn’t exist in in 2002.
@@Pugjamin it is the £25k which surprised from 2004. I live barely 200 metres from Listers. You are right about the other models like the Tiguan emerging from beneath It has become their flagship but is the market there? That applies to so many financed cars, I guess.
If the parking assist mode requires the use of a phone to operate, then surely this will result in the driver breaking the law and liable to a fine+points for using said mobile?
@@PetrolPed good point! 🤦🏻♂️ Albeit insurance might have something to say about their limit of liability. Great gimmick to show your mates, but not sure people would really get out of the car to remote control the parking….not terribly convenient, but novel nonetheless!
That looks like a very capable car on an off road with some interesting gizmos but I am not convinced in the badge i.e. turning up at a shoot or a riverbank it would in my opinion not be my car of choice as you said yourself it is roughly the price of your Defender. The plus side though is it probably wouldn't break down as often and it will have more room in the back than the 90 so I suppose it is a contender.
I had an exMilitary 110 FFR softtop. 2.5 D n/a 1995. I bought it in 2014 ran it as a Daily for 8 years and it never let me down. Never broke down. Even drove it from Norfolk Coast to North Northumberland 9hours never missed a beat.
Hi Ped I thought this might be interesting, and I was not disappointed. Initially badge snobbery came to the fore, surely VW cannot be serious trying to compete in this price sector, but then as we all know prices have gone crazy. Initial impression favourable and worthy of further investigation. The level of tec impressive but warning bells ring when you consider possible problems outside of warranty, which would seriously dent the housekeeping🤭
I own a 2015 VW Touareg tdi and recently sold for a 2022 Lexus GX 460. Yes the tdi is very fuel efficient, but you can’t beat the Lexus old fashion body on frame for driving smoothness. It’s in a league of its own. Totally old fashion, which I like, but that buttery V8 and built like a tank feeling makes it a better choice. I think the new Touareg looks nice, but way too high price and too much tech which is nonsense.
Very nice. Though I would prefer it to be not so tall, and I personally don't need the off-road capabilities or other gizmos. Hmm, maybe an Astra Estate will do for me then.
Loads of tech but the front sensor will still drop radar like they all do intermittently Big VW fan and long term owner but i can't see it's worth 80k guy
I had a '19 Touareg for a year or so. Wouldn't touch one with a bargepole again. Leaky sunroof caused no end of problems and nobody could fix it. Our local VW dealership is dreadful too, we found a good independent luckily.
Companies, top 10% of earners, and another and another batch of people trying to keep up with the jones's....New cars haven't sold well since pre covid, now interest rates are so high there's tough times to come for the car industry. Last financial crisis 4x4 values took a bath as everyone moved away from them due to high fuel prices. We've seen a far bigger impact with interest rates this time, so will be interesting to see if that causes any shift.
£80,000+ for a VW I'm sorry but they don't have that price value in a VW badge. Porsche,Bmw,Audi, I honestly believe Vw have gone mad with their pricing and badge value. ps I now own a VW
Me too, I've got a passat and an UP. I'm quite disappointed they have dropped the UP model, which is a great little city car with good economy. They seem to be going for much larger, much more expensive cars. Not really the peoples car any more...
Model by model or year by year, they are eliminating driving skills. I have a very sporty, coordinated 20year old son who refuses to learn how to drive a manual car. Parking, reverse parking, changing lanes, three point turns, are all part of standard skills. Sitting in the passenger seat , using a phone app to park a car doesn’t impress me. Who is actually in control of the vehicle?
Whilst the video was good, the car on the other hand i’m not so sure. The Touareg has always been capable off road and I’m not convinced this new one is justifiably different to the previous generations. As for the price, who is paying £80k for a VW badge? The very mention you made about a lot of similarity inside to a Tiguan shows the car just doesn’t meet the price tag and VW are out of their comfort league. Anyone with 1/2 a brain is instead looking at a 1yr old Cayenne with a better badge yet similar residuals. The only thing this has going for it is that it’s ever so slightly more left wing being a VW as opposed to the Audi / Porsche equivalents. Having said that, the customer care of VW these days isn’t what it was only 10yrs ago so even that is debatable.
Because that’s not how it’s pronounced. Here’s the definition for you. The car is named after a nomadic tribe. noun. Tua·reg ˈtwä-ˌreg. variants or less commonly Touareg. plural Tuareg or Tuaregs also Touareg or Touaregs. : a member of a nomadic people of the central and western Sahara and along the middle Niger from Tombouctou to Nigeria
