As the era of the purely petrol-engined Audi RS model draws to a close, Audi Sport has gone to town on the dear old RS 4 Avant, giving it one last push before the guillotine finally drops upon it, with the nameplate having been on sale since the end of the last century.
Known simply as the RS 4 Competition, this 75-unit run-out special is not cheap at £84,600, making it £16,000 more than a regular RS 4 Avant but, crucially, a couple of grand less than the similarly specified Vorsprung model. Given that its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine produces no more power or torque above the standard 444bhp and 600Nm RS 4, however, it would be easy to think of the Competition as a cynical marketing exercise; a car designed to extract maximum profit from a model whose enduring appeal would probably sell it to a committed few at almost any price.
Yet the Competition is much more than that. It’s a car with its own identity, both visually and dynamically; one that’s sharper, louder, faster and a fair bit more bespoke in feel beside the already rather tasty regular RS 4. But just how much extra bite does it offer? Our man Steve Sutcliffe got behind the wheel to find out.

yeah very true, but i am shocked Steve did such a huge mistake. Audi has stopped doing S tronic gearbox since they ditched 4.2 FSI engine.

Ooh bonus Steve! Straight on the back of the GT3 RS. My M3 Xdrive's gearbox is a bit jerky in level 3 too, I'm not a fan of it either and it does also seem unnecessary, although to be fair it's still a bit smoother than my old M4's DCT. (I so miss that car). Love the boxing helmet under a racing helmet look. Fingers crossed for a Steve C63 and an M3CLS review in the future, :) Thanks for another great video.

Watch Joe Achilles vid today on the RS4 and he said one of the Audi staff let slip that they plan to release them in the US because the RS6 has done so well.

2:29 it is not a dual clutch gearbox. It is ZF8 torque converter auto. Nice but he shouldn't be saying it's a DCT.

If Im not mistaken, Audi used the "competition" name before BMW... E.g the A6 3.0 TDI Competition. Correct me If Im mistaken...

The gearbox "jutter" he is talking about is called AMAX shifting. It is that fastest possible shift you can get from an ZF8 automatic transmission. Yes you give up some comfort for speed.

AMAX is only engaged when doing launch control, the judder he’s talking about is something else (not even sure there’s a name for it)

Part of the reason I loved the drive logic selector on M cars is for this exact same reason. When I'm on the highway the kicks from the MDCT are extremely fun. Also when sliding the kick can literally send the car sideways which is hugely entertaining. Then by using the middle settings for proper performance driving you can get perfectly smooth upshifts which do not upset the car.

Maybe I’m in the minority but I don’t see the point in this car, who really wants a focused estate car. What Audi should have done is sort the chassis and rear diff of the regular RS4 and gave it an extra 60-70hp.

I tuned my Pontiac G8 GT transmission to be smooth shifting in Regular Mode & snappy shifting for Sports Mode So snappy that I get 2nd gear chirps!!

Surely they could have just given it an extra 50hp and get it up to 500hp, just with a tune? Especially with it being twin turbocharged you would have thought that would of been a pretty easy thing for Audi to do.

It's an old gen car and It's expensive but I could imagine buting one, the only flaw to me is really that power hasn't increased which is a no go for me, still as you said It's much lighter than a M3 touring

This guy needs pensioning off. He can't even be bothered to read the press packs and know what gearbox the car has, despite him 'running' one for six months. It's a ZF torque converter box and not the a dual clutch which the previous generation had.

ZF makes dual clutch transmission as well. In this case it is a classic automatic transmission (torque converter).

I don’t think that Audi tinker with Bhp numbers much ….. at least in the RS range. In these days of remapping, maybe they feel it is below their pay grade or something. Maybe they are right. Despite the relatively modest power, the basic RS4 is such a lovely car.

I think the lack of true enjoyment on Steve's face is the biggest weakness of this car. I absolutely love Audi's RS line, but there seems to be too far between them being spine-tinglingly exciting

I’m convinced car companies produce these cars just for journalists. You can’t use the performance legally on the road yet the car is nothing but an expensive compromise on the track. It’s a shame manufacturers don’t put their energies elsewhere! Maybe I’m just showing my age 😀.

Undoubtedly a good car. But Audi continue to under deliver with its RS cars this generation. The M and AMG counterparts are always better in terms of power and enjoyment. Steve's face says it all.

Great job on this Steve. I don't get the RS4 in general. Its very forgettable to drive and this competition sounds like its only memorable for all the wrong reasons. The V6 was never fitting for the RS badge. Quick and competent but nothing I would want after

The kick makes for a more emotional shift and engagement. Look at Ferrari dual clutch shifts VS PDK feel. I like the Ferrari more when it shifts, more emotional.
