Hmm... in all of the war diaries written by the pilots from Skalski's Circus, Macchis appear quite often, usually as clusters of burning debris. :) Wacław Król also mentions an unorthodox tactical move he saw performed by an Italian pilot: a series of desperate and chaotic turns, followed by hitting the ground at top speed. Król, an experienced flying ace with more than 10 kills on his account (including one Macchi), admits he didn't expect this one. He barely had to shoot his guns :) Generally, Skalski's aces describe 202's as a nice target practice, steered by a terrified Italian amateur. They usually preferred to spare ammunition for real opponents though, in at least three confirmed cases out-maneuvering Macchis into a crash instead of shooting them down properly (Król, Arct and Skalski himself). But hey - I know Skalski's boys were no usual pilots. For a regular, a Macchi could have been a challenge. ;)

Actually the mc200 was already a fine plane, but the mc202 was the a lot better. The cr42s and the g.50s were good against hurricanes and gladiators... but not against p40s or spitfires.

No. It had 2x 12.7mm MGs in the upper cowling and 2x 7.7mm Mgs in the wings. (1 per wing.) The issue was the 12.7mm guns, which used a frangible bullet as standard. (Frangible means it shattered on impact , with tiny shrapnel fragments penetrating the target). The result was little more real damage than that caused by a .22 shot shell, scaled up maybe 3x. The 7.7 mm were rifle caliber guns and did about 2x the damage of the 12.7mm guns. The MC 202 was under-gunned, almost all its opposition outgunned it. It's successor, the MC 205 was initially armed with the same guns, but after the third production run the Regia Aeronautica asked Macchi to replace the 7.7mm guns in the wings with German MG 151/20 20mm rapid fire cannon., and that pretty much made the 205's into a very dangerous opponent. (I have no idea why the Italians thought a frangible bullet in a fighter was a good idea!)

@@martijn9568 Nope, in the video you can see some macchis shooting with the 7.7mm wing guns too, like at the minute 2.26 for example. By the way the 7.7mm guns were often removed since they reduced the flight characteristics of the plane

Thunderbolt in Italian translated is "Folgore." I think that's what they meant by it, not comparing it to the P-47. MC.202's literal name is the thunderbolt

the P-47 had 8 0,5inch guns, the Mc-202 only two. And the P-47 was 90 km/h faster but not as turnable as the Mc202. Both had nothing to with each other.

Typing "Italian Thunderbolt" in the movie sounds as the Folgore was the answer of Axis to the P47...So I typed that the Folgore was built before the Thunderbolt first flight, therefore "The Italian Thunderbolt" is anacronistic.

The pilot left the dog, sunglasses and the cane back at the base.
