I"m two weeks into my new bike that came with a CX4 motor. i had no idea the of what EMTB mode was. I came upon a rock pile on my second ride, and the bike seemed to say, "Let's do this!". I have since looked this up. Now I understand what they're up to. It is amazing! Now, I look forward to difficult sections. this thing just motors over them. Great Job Bosch!
Extended Boost is a game changer! I love it!! Not sure if this vid did the best job showing how it works. The best way I can describe it is if you give it a hard 1/4 pedal stroke you get the same power and distance under power of a full 360 degree pedal stroke, possibly even longer if you're in a taller gear. This means that in chunky rock sections where you will pedal strike like mad, you can simply ratchet the pedals a 1/4 turn at at time and power through the whole section. Same for step ups or big logs, just give the pedals a kick and let the motor do the work. This really feels like a big step unleashing the full potential of ebike performance. This is a very clever way to get the benefit of a throttle blip without actually having a throttle. Great job Bosch, I can only imagine what the next few years of R&D will bring.
Well done Steve and well done Bosch - shows yet again who's the boss of the e-bike motors. Add the solid warranty and bullet-proof reliability I am SO SO glad I went for Trek and Bosch!
That is mega news for all Bosch gen 4 users. The motor was pretty good from the start and now it seems to rank amongst the very best. Kudos to Bosch engineers.
Really makes sense for a bike shop to sell Bosch motors. Every upgrade at least, the customer has to visit the shop for the free upgrade, and who knows while they wait for the upgrade to happen they might just choose to have something services or fixed. Maybe buy an accessory in the shop.
@Tasunke what if there isn't another one? Not everyone has 500 authorized dealers nearby like you. Instead of telling people they just have to 'man up', use your brain a little next time you post a comment.
I really wish Bosch would make 'special case updates' that bike owners could download and update their motor or kiox etc. software. There are people that have these bikes that live in far remote areas or countries and are unfortunatly not able to go to their original dealers. Greets from Lebanon Beirut!
Biggest annoyance with bosch motors, you can't do the upgrades at home, you have no choice but to fork out money to get your local approved LBS to do it for you, even though in this day and age its as simple as plugging a usb cable in.
Yes i agree this to the fullest. Also you need to be a Bosch service point in order to get access to their software and cables. Which is straight up impossible for a consumer and even annoying for small businesses.
@@1barnet1 Yep, had I known when I got my bike that I would be restricted in this way, I would have gone for a shimano steps or other branded motor instead that does allow the user to upgrade its software. Hell Tesla do their upgrades automatically over the air.
So glad I went with Bosch over the Shimano steps system, picked up a Trek Rail 7 a fortnite ago. Unfortunately our local bikes shops have a 6 week waiting list for servicing.
Got the Trek Rail 9.7 2020 gen4 last December. Over 2000 km and no motor problems at all. I’m glad i went with the Bosch motor and I cant wait for the update.
After my girlfriend rode my Trek, she wanted an eBike as well. We ordered a Cube access with the same Bosch motor, which we collected yesterday. Asked the bike shop to check for the new update over the phone after watching this video, they said nothing had come through. When we arrived in the shop an hour later, update was available! Plugged it in, around 5 minutes to install, if you ask them really nicely, get them to set the region as Canada, you'll grain an extra 5mph because they have a higher restriction speed (20mph). I've had to prebook my first service for end of August, they'll install the update then.
emtb mode is basically shifting the levels of power depending on the degree of angle. which internally there is a gyroscope that monitors yap, pitch, roll and then tells the controller to put it in whatever power is needed based upon the pitch. i have the same technology in my CYC X1 PRO.
Nothing to do with angle, it's just torque sensing, the harder you push the pedals the higher the boost assist. Emtb just jumps higher boost per pedal effort. Jumps from tour to turbo even on the flat if you suddenly pedal harder.
The new 2024 update is now available in uk from Monday past adding auto, sport and emtb(165 short crank) apparently its pushed the 15.5 up to 19mph though so i think this will be over written as soon as bosch realise its clocked to high for UK! Ha you can only choose 4 to run but can toggle throughout the others removing and adding them auto and emtb short crank modes are now present on the kiox together! The US got this update last year I've been waiting for ours Rob at embt relised the info yesterday on his forum! The US guys are replacing Turbo with the auto mode now saying its the only mode thats needed its spot on perfect so really curious to test this! Im just this second away to update my smart system and go for a blast!
Hey EMBN! Steve's doesn't seem to understand the extended boost feature! I believe it means in technical terrain when you can't continuously rotate the cranks due to a trail obstacle that your pedal will strike the new software will keep the power on when you stop pedaling momentarily! The example in the vid showed continuous crank rotation as Steve rode over the obstacle! Please check with Bosch and clarify this please! Ride ride ride!
Is there any potential impact on battery health due to what seems like a requirement to suddenly draw a large spike of current? Never thought about it but do the battery packs have any capacitors to protect the battery from this?
Las Vegas, Nevada. Rode this morning before it hit 110 degrees. The lower cadence sensitivity is something I'm really missing with my Yamaha. I am not a high cadence rider. Never have been. BTW, there is a certain playfulness in your demonstrations that says as much about the ride as your words do. The technology is certainly improving.
New Bosh,I have enough to think about without thinking about what the bike is thinking about if you get my drift. Going for a road ride into New Quay Wales today. Capt Harry
@@TheAntoine191 There is a reason why it is absolutely different. The gen4 doesn't have the transmission the old one had. There for the new one is absolutely seemless. Which i can also confirm from riding it in my Ghost Hybride ASX.
With there being more torque and power i hope it dosent effect battery range too much.have only just managed to master monster whellies also hoping this power shift to lower cadence dosent effect power delivery to much im 90% in touring mode .how do you guys find the differences to a standard gen 4 and updated gen 4 in touring mode ?
That’s the first Haibike I really liked the look of. Seems like a useful firmware upgrade to an already useful motor. That said, I’m ever more happy with my 2020 Levo Comp and the Brose motor. Ultimately though this must be putting a lot of pressure on Shimano who are being left behind... I expect something special soon from them.
Awesome! Thanks for the video, and....what about Kiox update? Hope more training features will finally be implemented.....do you ha e any news in that or plan a video?
yo do realise that they are trying to deliver the content in the most effective way possible, and they went with this narrative. sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. lighten up man, and take it with a pinch of humour and don't take it so serious. Great vid - and great delivery of content.
My wife owns a 2017 Haibike SDURO "hardtail" with the CX motor. Please do a video about cadence & gear vs. Eco/Tour/sport/turbo to maximize chain life and battery/ride distance. I keep telling her to increase cadence... But she keeps lugging (slow-peddle) Up hills.
Not sure if this has all ready been asked but when we leave the EU will you be able to del restrict your mtb and will all those sold after have a higher speed limit, thank.
I think it means when the motor doesn't give any support. He mentions this when talking about the extended boost feature where one is going very slowly - no pedal rotation(?) - over a difficult obstacle. You then apply pressure to the pedals and the motor "kicks in". If the motor did not kick in, then this would feel as if the pedal "jammed" since it would be almost impossible for the rider to move the bike- or rotate the pedals - on pure leg power.
@@zedpoutine It will be interesting to see how this works in reality. Having ridden ebikes for a while now, the one thing i notice is that a stalled ebike, sucumbs to gravity more than a lighter non ebike.. i.e if an object or incline is causing you to stall, calling on the motor to give you a turbo shove without the need to pedal sounds like a great idea at first and sure may at times work, however being clipped in when this occurs might be an unwelcome shove :)
Very Interesting .Firmware /Software updates really improve previous models. I would love to try updated Bosch which maybe is now currently the best motor . Have 2018 and 2020 levo's. Updates to 2018 Levo Brose motor and battery really has made them as good as 2020 motors even better as they are more bullet proof.?????Elephant in the frame?????? Set eco 20/30 Trail to 35/55 Turbo 60/100 really smooth strong and rideable .Also have a Shimano E8000 very good but a bit sudden on technical climbs and just doesn't have the pedal control and smoothness of levo or outright grunt.
From the Philippines with love ...but... It is a pity that we do not hear the sound of the engine, this was the opportunity to hear it not that music ..
hi guys. just got my trek powerfly 7 (2020) from update at my local dealer and i noticed EMTB mode on purion display is now replaced with SPORT mode? is ot OK or...?
I look ,weight and noise are much more important than just the power increase by a few newton.Wish more manufacturers would do that rather than more &more power.we don't need a motor bike but rather a bike.
I have a gen 4 2020 motor so im happy I will be able to get the software update this summer. However, what if I want to upgrade the actual motor in my trek rail 9.8 to the new 2021 motor with more torque? is that possible? Or even desired?
Nice bike choice, I have the same. If you update the software you will effectively have a 2021 motor. This is only a software/firmware change, not a hardware change.
@@1968Stratocaster 10 more newton metres if you're an engineering nerd like me. Torque = twisting moment which multiplied by RPM gives power so technically yes but the motor will still be limited to 250 watts average power as required by law. From the reviews I've read so far it sounds like it's not that noticeable on the trail but the other changes to how the EMTB and power overrun work are great.
@@BrentDunstan Thanks! sounds like the 2021 physical motor is exactly the same and its just a software upgrade. this wasn't clear to me after watching the video.
Will the 2020 models receive the software upgrade this year? Three days ago my CUBE shop didn't mention the upgrade. Are there really no hardware differences? They are not really getting an other 10 Nm just by an software upgrade, are they? I bought my bike, a CUBE Reaction Race 500 2020 three days ago, this is kind of a mixed blessing. It is one of the BOSCH low points, that you can not upgrade your software at home. Not only is it necessary to bring your bike to your dealer, you must pay for an upgrade every time. Nevertheless I have been riding it all over Munich and about 60 km in two days isn't too bad for somebody who returns to cycling after more than 30 years. I'm enjoying my bike a lot. The BOSCH Gen 4 motor is fantastic. I can ride my bike even with a severely broken foot without major pain even on medium distances. My E-montain bike allows me to get back into one of my favorite sports. It makes me happy. I'm already sure, that buying the Reaction was a great decision.
@@der_hahnenkamm ...and only your dealer can make that update. That's exactly the crap that makes me not wanna support the E-MTB industry at all. Most dealers charge you just to upgrade the firmware. And what about people who live a long way away from any dealers?
Everyone focusing on how annoying it is to have to get the bike shop to do the upgrade. But how awesome is it that the bike you already own is getting more power and features added after you bought it. When was the last time a car company did that (other than tesla). 😃
@@Adamoo8 Having to go to a dealer to do a simple firmware update is just part of the problem. The real problem here is how irreparable and unserviceable these motor companies have made their products. Open up the motor yourself? Warranty voided. Circuit board fried? Buy a new motor. And what if your motor is from years ago and has been discontinued? Depending on what bike it's on, you're basically forced to buy a new bike. While this business model is perfect for their profit margins, it's subpar for the environment and consumer. While this update is great in the sense that it makes you feel that your motor is still relevant, its doesn't solve any of the problems mentioned above.
@@Adamoo8 You are not wrong. ;-) As a techie it is just a little frustrating. The one thing I miss about my bike is better connectivity. The sensors could offer a fantastic foundation for an entire ecosystem of electronic gadgets and apps. For example, it would be extremely easy to use the sensors measuring how much energy the rider puts into his pedals... Sadly Bosch doesn't seem willing to open the interface standards. I get this for safety related motor features, like the output and the top speed, but other brands seem to be much more open, I'm looking at you Specialized... ;-) Software upgrades, based on signed code shouldn't be a problem at all.
They only mentioned the GEN 4 2020 and 2021. The 2019 GEN 3 is a completely different motor and if I had to guess it probably does not have the sensors that are required to effectively implement the new boost feature.
How does the customer make the update? Must go to a workshop? What is bothering me with the new Bosch is they are making us more dependent of the workshops and not always we have a good workshop nearby that won´t ripp us off. I got yamaha in one site and bosch on another, got no probs going to a workshop where I have the bosch bike but where I live most of the time I have yamaha and have no reliable workshop nearby. If updating to keep it optimal is the way to go, they should give the consumer the opportunity of buying the software and update our bikes directly from the brand web and be independent from the workshops. Bike industry always made it easy to be independent so I hope motor producers will do the same
Guess I’ll be making an appointment soon as when I bought my 2020 model Focus Thron2 6.8 from my local dealer they told me to pop in every so often for an update, there was no mention of cost, I was already with the performance as it has allowed my 63 year old crappy knees to tackle climbs that killed them on my old GT I-link 5 0.4 trail Mtn bike.... anybody want to buy it 😆
Any bike shop that is worth their salt will not charge you for the upgrade and a A proud Bosch dealer myself i don't think that was ever Bosch's intention
I'd like to see a comparison of e bikes with 'standard' 'boring' 'old' 'incapable' bikes to see if what you can't do. Unless you're Danny Mac, you ain't getting up some of that, gearing is too low to maintain speed and you can't change whilst it's loaded.
I need to update my gen 4, but we have no dealer here in my country. does anyone know if you can update the motor just by having the motor (without bike)? that case I would ship the motor only, to the original dealer, your feedback will be highly appreciated!
It certainly does I have ridden a volition bike built in Sydney Australia fitted with a 60 volt battery that comes custom programmed and it was capable of 66kmh on the flat and had drive train damaging torque. So much so they only offer a 3month drive train warranty on such a beast if you order one..level 2 pas is equivalent to boost on a shimano equipped bike. The 25kmh limit only applies to bikes ridden on road in Australia..Off road go for it but risk the damage...chains are cheap.
Boost mode is the next higher level of assist you can choose where it is on all the time. Just buying my bike now so don't have enough experience to compare too much but another rider said he just stays in boost all the time here in Colorado mountains.
Question for you guys, is it possible to find a decent EMB for under 3500...wait for it... Canadian? :( and in Canada. Been looking like mad (I am in Toronto).
