This is the last major project in our DIY home build. Red is installing some plumbing, pouring the concrete floor, screwing in the bracing and cement board, installing the drain, applying the Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane, and doing a sloped dry pack for the shower base.
We are Red and April. We are building our own home from the ground up, figuring it out as we go, and sharing the journey. This is our first time doing a complete shower.

Thanks for using Schluter Systems. For your first time out I was impressed how smooth your Kerdi Walls looked. That’s where a lot of people struggle, the details make the difference. When I train new tile contractors the troweling can be mess. You did well.

If you do any more shower pans. Try packing your dry pack I have placed over 100 shower pans all you needed to do is get a 2x4 and a hammer. hammer it to a nice pack state, then use the board like you did to cut to slop. your are doing a greatjob keep up the good work

Thanks! Good tip! As we were wetting it down later, we ended up packing it down a lot more. Glad we did, because I think it was too dry and wouldn't have set up hard enough.

Yes especially after wetting it down and compressing it, the dry pack ended up a little low around the edge of the drain. He leveled it out with mortar. 😊 Happy New Year!

Many years ago I worked with a tile setter and mixed lots of the dry pack. It was just a mix of sand and Portland cement. It was the way almost all shower floors was done at the time. Yes you had the mix a little too dry, but you recovered well. Thanks for sharing.

You can find 4x8 pieces of hardy backer boards at FBM in Tucson, I have to do that to 16 bathrooms next week. We don’t do membrane, just redgard

We’re doing hospital remodeling at Banner Tucson, the whole entire wing witch has 17 bathrooms in total, one doesn’t have-a shower, just for staff. You guy’s are so inspirational, you motivate me to build a house off grid almost like yours.

Wow, for someone’s first time using this system you did a great job. Especially with the dry pack. Hoping to do something similar in my home. Also not sure if they will be used in the future but the kerdi band and their corner pieces should be used on all intersections.
