The Metro is a supermini car, later a city car that was produced by British Leyland and was intended to complement and eventually replace the Mini.
A particularly peculiar system in these is their suspension, which we will be having a closer look at today.

What an unexpected new project on this channel. Back in the day used to see these cars on the roads here in the UK all the time, now it's really rare to see one. I've never seen a RU-vid series on the Metro so It's cool to see this one here.

These were everywhere in the 90s it was either a nova fiesta or metro for your first car in the mid 90s in the UK , had a maestro which is basically a bigger metro but MacPherson strut suspension , you could bolt on all the mg bits they also did an metro turbo which was simply a small turbo bolted to the a + think it made 90bhp , the maestro was a ltd run 2ltr turbo with. A carb that made 150bhp in std form , easy to tweak to 180 was a real wolf in sheep's clothing .

Back in 87 I was working in a garage. We had a metro mg for sale that had a Janspeed exhaust, Weber twin choke 40 carb and God knows what else. It flew😂, we all took great pleasure in blasting it around the work test track( a 4 mile loop around local roads). Brought back good memories😎

Benny? In a Metro? That’s not something I expected, but I absolutely love it! The suspension will go higher once it’s been driven. It’s good practice to bounce the car as hard as you can when you’re pumping it up to exercise it. That way it’s as close to the correct spec as possible. Also, the correct height at the front is 327mm, while the rear should be 321mm. However, that figure should rise or fall by 2.5mm for every 5°C over or under 17°C I saw your post on the Metro groups, and those SSR Mesh wheels are hen’s teeth in the UK. A friend of mine used to run them on his Metro, but since he sold it he’s saving them for his Mini once it’s restored. Anyway, I have the factory Austin Rover dealer repair manuals for these cars, so if you need any information or part numbers, then give me a shout.

Now that's blast from the past and a strange thing to see in Australia. Had a 1985 MG Metro Turbo back in the early 90's, living in Scotland it was something else that needed welding. I remember breaking the timing chain tensioner over-reving it, took the cover off, fitted a new tensioner and away it went again! 🤓

Brit here, couple of mates had several of these in college - happy days admiring the road through the floor pans and inner arches in the boot. Also a particularly memorable moment when i pointed out to one them that the reason for the burning smell, was because speaker cable wasn't appropriate for supplying power to the amps... 😂 Great to see the car though, they're really cool and a hoot to drive. Some might find it interesting if you did a bit of an instructional video showing the various bits of the hydragas suspension up close and how it works etc?

Pulled heaps of my metros apart for the engine and front brakes for minis. 75hp which is 10 more than the coopers bigger cam, valves and the hif44 carb I'm pretty sure that was the differences. (This was around 2005) a nice 3-1 header by maniflow and a rc40 system was go too for us aswell sounded great. 1.5/1 roller tip rockers make a great difference to that set up too gave mine 1/8th mile passes of 10.8 secs (super fast 🤣.....)

A good friend of mine has a 1989 Mini that he bought about 25 years ago when he had just gotten his driver's license. Over the years he has modified it to 120hp (naturally-aspirated with a big cam and Weber carb) and turned it into a rallye car. He drove it one single stage, flipped it and then had to restore it including painting. After it was done, he moved away and it sat in the shed for 3 years. Last week he came back and brought it back to life and he's planning on getting it inspected next time he is around. Anyway: They are such weird cars. Whether it's the transmission situation or stuff like the oil pressure switch. When he brought it back to life last week all I could think of was modernizing it. I'm sure there are kits to convert it to fuel injection. Combine that with modern sensors and an ECU and you had something that sounded basically the same but was more reliable. I'm not experienced (or wealthy) enough to tackle such a project but I would gladly wrench with him :D

The hydragas suspension was pretty comfortable at urban speeds, and because it weighed nothing it could easily bully heavy modern cars on roundabouts. Sipped fuel as well. The one car I wish I'd never sold. I think it's in a private collection now.
