Cat dealer tech here I actually just had a cat off highway emissions class last week my instructor was very knowledgeable about the new engines and you kind of touched on it but the biggest change I’m excited about is no more egr/nrs system. The science has been improving on the scr and we are able to filter all the nox out without having to reburn exhaust gasses in the combustion chamber. This will however lead to more def consumption but I’m stoked about not having clogged up egr components and being able to make more horsepower with less displacement. That’s why we are going to see this engine replace the larger ones

A lot of common rail engines such as mtu and man use the upside down filter cartridges because they found that mechanics have a tendency to prefill filters with diesel before installing causing the injectors to suck up unfiltered fuel and trashing out the high pressure injectors. That was man’s fix for trashing injectors in their engines. I’ve been seeing a lot of this lately.

Definitely get euro engine design vibes from this. I'm a Kenworth tech so Paccar MX engines are what we work on alot. In the trucking industry, we've been around the cartridge filters for a while now. The new EPA 2021B Paccar went to the twin filter module and made filter services alot better. I can't wait until everyone else starts getting rid of EGR. I know it's been in the works for north America for a while but I'd love to finally see it done for truck engines.

Back in the day the 1693 had rear timing chest. The 3406 they moved the timing chest to the front for easier serviceability. So going backwards in that area. The cartridge style filters again cat used to have cleanable cartridge fuel filters so kinda going backwards there too. I would think in a truck configuration the scr and dpf will move to somewhere below the frame and not on top of the engine. I think this for 2 reasons. Clearance aka space constraints and heat. You really dont want all that heat under your hood

Great job Josh . I pray to God that will bring more people like you on this world. You love and enjoy this trade of the Diesel MECHANICS (not technicians) . About the new C13 D I think Cat did a great job bringing their engines on the 20 Century technology and it will be on top and ahead of any other Engine manufacturer . On all these common rails is a known fact that the HFPP is the silent killer of the engine if they don`t use high quality materials for the build on these pumps. Not all the operators take regularly oil samples when service these engines and this is a educational deficiency from the OEM producers . I am from EU and they have these engines on the road like 18 Years back and they have learn the lessons for North America this is fairly new it will fail as expected for new technology also the educational factor in using and maintaining it will be a big struggle as these folks are used with old engines that you pee in the fuel tank and they will still go .

Interesting. If you want 1000 hour service intervals, it isn't just a matter of more fuel filtering. You need more oil (bigger oil pan, or an external tank) and more oil filter capacity. In 3406 and C15 (which come with a single oil filter standard), with the use of some simple Cat parts meant for marine engines, you can have 2 or 3 oil filters working in parallel - each filter having half or one third the oil passing through it. How can you do that on this new engine? Looks like it will need major modifications. Looks like Cat reducing its market again, after giving up heavy haul trucks. Plenty of marine users of the 3406 needed the easy bolt-on arrangement of two oil filters with a lever to route the oil through one filter or the other - this lets you change the oil filters without shutting down the engine.

I can tell you right away that this engine is going to have air distribution problems with the single external intake port being at the front of the head, and so the farther back cylinders are going to run hotter, and in the future after they have coolant temp issues in the back, probably leading to cooked liner seals and oil/coolant contamination, they'll have an updated cylinder head with another water port for the rear cylinders like the 3406B. They'd be much better off with the single external intake port being two without a divider to allow for pressure balancing, one for the front three and one for the rear three. Idk how I get this sense but I do have it

I guess they call them hydraulic lash adjusters because they adjust the valve lash using hydraulics. I dunno maybe the marketing folks got involved and needed a snazzy name to talk about. I guess my feeling is who cares as long as they work. Keep the good stuff coming.

They should still build a C15D, lots of older generation truckers that can afford to buy newer trucks would avoid smaller engines. So they would be more likely to buy a x15 vs c13

I used to work on Sizu (AGCO) engines and we prefered belt driven waterpumps, those and EGR stuf were the only thing you'd need to worry about failing between 7000 and 15000 hours. I Always found gear driven waterpumps a risky undertaking.

7:11 Most other companies refer to the the unit that automatically adjusts the valve lash as HLAs. It's not a new term, just new to CAT. 🙂👍 Maybe CAT will become competitive again in the engine market with this emissions compliant engine... Our mining company stepped away from CAT underground machines a few years ago and moved exclusively to Sandvik to avoid the CAT machines. They run the big dumb 27lt in AD65, and the overstretched C15 in the R3000 loader. Neither machine competes well with the Sandvik machines with their tier 4 final Penta engines.

With all these new engines it's all about the emissions. The engines themselves are great, except international, but if you don't keep up on the aftertreatment stuff have fun after the warranty runs out.

Looks like Nylon fuel lines from Raytech or similar. Kinda like the ones Cummins had the melted fuel line issue (sticking TRV I think). Inverted canisters are great, but why not make these see-through so you can actually see the filter's condition? A polycarbonate is plenty tough for that purpose. Not sure if that's a Bosch pump or a Denso pump. The Denso HP0 is right at its limit of fueling if they want to push 690hp. The pump is good for about 750tops, and even then only if you drop the pressure from 2400bar down to 2000 to help the pump flow more. Rear gear makes a lot of sense when you consider the wicked torsional vibration a gear-driven HPCR pump can put into the drivetrain. You want the pump close to the mass of the flywheel if at all possible. Trying to drive the pump AFTER all the flex of the crankshaft (i.e. on the front) can cause problems with both the front geartrain and the pump. Rear gears are quieter, have less vibration and are smoother. Cummins had scissor gears on the front gears of the X15 in part because of the front-mounted pump and the vibration it pushed into the gears.

Seriously a canister oil or fuel filter mounted upside down Wile E. Coyote pure genius for fuel to spill everywhere vs a spin on filter mounted right side up so fuel or oil doesn't spill everywhere

It's very similar to the marine C12.9. I've worked on a yatch with twin C12.9 with 1000 mhp each one, and they also have a very good low end torque. And also, all manufactururers are going to small displacement engines with forced induction (the C12.9 have compound turbos and a supercharger and makes near to 60 PSI of boost)

Most rear gear train design was the old 1600 series, 1693, 1676, 1674. Not using a spin on fuel filters keeps people from prefilling the filter and causing early hour failure of contaminated fuel. Wonder what the max fuel psi is in the rail?

No EGR anymore and Commonrail. The exhaust aftertreatment system looks very modern to me since it seems to be an SCR CAT and a DPF directly in Series behind each other and the distance to the turbo outlet is short which is ideal. Hydraulic Lifters... not a huge fan of those in an industrial diesel they will wear out and collapse inevitably at some point but should be an easy fix to just drop a set of new Lifters in an engine like this. I'm not surprised that they brought these modernizations into this engine BUT regarding the Injectors it really depends on the design and the supplier how well they will hold up.

I find it interesting that caterpillar is moving ahead with this technology while auto manufacturers are being forced into EV, with some states banning sales of petroleum vehicles by 2030. So unless there’s something I don’t know about, this is telling me that battery power replacement for large constant horsepower applications such as OTR trucks, farm and construction equipment is no way close to being ready for that timeline…

Looks interesting. HLA is coined name by Eaton, number one maker of valvetrain components and valves. The JD 18L uses HLA. I see it as necessary step for cylinder deactivation for stringent emissions and GHG reductions. Oil module looks similar to Paccar one that is made by Mann Hummel. Fuel system looks a lot like the new Mahle filtration module with Delphi common rail. Turbo looks like Borg Warner style like used on Duramax L5Ps. Nice video Josh. Curious if CGI block, if liner is upper, mid bore, or lower flange style. Obviously overhead cam.

give me a mechanical engine to work on they are simple to work with and to figure out compared to a common rail engine they have so many more components to diagnose and replace. I agree with you Josh that meui injection is better in the fact that they work with less components unlike a heui injector that has oil and fuel but they are both a low pressure fuel system and better in my opinion for cost of repairs i just like the fact of being able to open a valve cover and running an overhead on the engine i can inspect the components and how they wear if any with hydraulic lifter you have no reason to open up the valve cover that means you have no idea how the components are behaving up there other than listening to it running but in the end i may be wrong and CAT may know something i don't i m kind of old style cheers and keep on the great work

@NBSV1
@NBSV1 Год назад
Time will tell, but I think it's unlikely. The majority of trucks are fleet ones any more and they're more focused on saving money. And, generally the cheapest option is going to be the standard factory engine. A CAT is going to be the more expensive optional choice. And, for emissions they'd have to develop a different system so it would fit into the trucks. Just not really worth it for them at this point.

@NBSV1 if cat release a new engine for trucks I know every second truck in Australia would have one, they were extremely popular before they stopped making them
