New Changes and Updates to the 2023 Subaru Outback! 

Just ordered mine in same colors, but with a few more small options. Essentially a luxury car at regular car price with Subaru added reliability.

Recommended you to test the heated steering wheel at 4-5 clock location, it’s not heated as hot as other portion, I be been tested 4 cars and include mine 23 wilderness same issue

I love my onyx xt, I just wish the c lights were how they used to be on the outgoing models and my android auto wireless is finicky.

Very nice! Do most of the updates apply to the Outback Limited?

We have a 21 XT touring. Since we bought it, we would randomly have the screen go black & the radio would stop. The AC would still work, but no way to adjust. It would do this about 2x a month. We recently took it for its 18k service and they did a total wipe & software update. So far it has fixed the issue. Thank god. We do love the vehicle other than that. It’s roomy, fast & gets good mpg. No other problems.

Why is the map lighting do limited and dim? I have a 2015 Impreza and love that the map lights illuminate the entire cockpit including to the floor.

4 o’clock is not heated between4-5 the joint portion , tested few 2023 model not heated it’s about 6 degree less than other portion

I was pleasantly surprised to find that in Canada, we get more trims & options for 2023. Top trim comes with a choice of either black leather or Java brown. We get the Onyx trim as well as OBW trim. We got a new colour option - dark burgundy metallic.

where is the SI-Drive? Did they sunset this feature from Outback?

Hopefully they'll apply that screen to the 2020-2022 Outback and Legacy with a software update.

I think your video might have just convinced me to upgrade my 2015 Premium to the 2023. I need to review the models because I thought the Limited was the one with most bells and whistles..... now it's the Touring XT? Great that the infotainment issues are resolved because that was a deal-breaker for me

Do the infotainment updates carry over to the 2023 Legacy as well? I have a 2023 Legacy on order and I have been so bummed about the Android auto only taking a small part of the screen so this would be a very exciting update!

Wish they would get rid of all that black plastic cladding. It's a deal breaker for me.

We live in the dark ages here in Aus. I wonder why they don't include the full digital driver screen for the top model. It has been in Japan for years now and is very modern and functional. We finally got the turbo here in Aus for the 23 model but the touring XT is missing the brown leather, wireless charger, digital mirror, the new facelift, the new eyesight lens and the USB-C at the back row. The brown leather is only available for the non turbo Touring. Updates are very slow here. You guys enjoy it!!!

Is it true the ONLY the Outback Touring model has a THIRD camera placed in between the 2 cameras on either side of the front mirror that is specifically designed to detect pedestrians and bicycle riders?

Have a '17 Touring OB, I still think the gadgets are a bit too distracting. Does the auto stop/start still have to be turned off each time you start the car?

what is the touch screen response when it is -20*F (or colder) for those of us who live in Alaska, upper limits of continental US, or even Canada? LCDs hate cold weather, and even at a balmy 0*F, hate to react quickly. I hope the seat/steering wheel heater controls remain physical buttons, because you will most like have gloves on for the first 15 minutes of you drive in those temperatures....

I had a 2020 outback but got rid of it because the infotainment system was so atrocious. The new 2023 model looks much more responsive than past years.

I understand better speakers aren't available for the Outback Wilderness; how would you describe the Wilderness stereo?

Does anyone know what that is above the backup camera? Some outbacks appear to have a flat surface above the huge center screen while others appear to have an elevated sensor with a red light on the right side. What is that thing?

Digital rear view mirror looks like the same one Toyota is using. Which makes sense as they seem to be cooperating more and more due to their ownership stake. I hope the next Crosstrek model year gets it as an option. It really is handy for seeing beyond the headrests in hatchbacks.

I just bought a 2023 Subaru Outback Onyx a month ago. This is my 4th Subaru and my 2nd Outback. I regret buying it. First, I do not like the new style front end. They added the fake brake cooler intakes on the front and made them in black plastic to make them stand out. They also made the fenderwell trim a bulkier black plastic, in an attempt to make it look more rugged and "Jeep like". Although I do not care for it, I figured it would grown on me. My first thought when I sat in the one I purchased was, why no cloth seats? The salesman told me that you could only get cloth in the base model and the only thing offered was "StarTex" (basically a cheap plastic thread woven to make a seat cover) or leather. The salesman said, it is water repellent and you can wipe mud or spills off of it with no problem. Again, I figured I would get accustom to it. After the purchase I found out you cannot use the plug in to utilize the Apply Carplay, your phone can only hook-in via Bluetooth and WiFi. There is a problem with my head unit and I can seldom get the Bluetooth to hook-in with my phone. After 1 1/2 Hours at the dealership, the Encore Delivery guy, and two salesman, they gave up and said they'd have to contact Subaru. Mine has the charging pad for your cell phone and I discovered that the genius who designed it and its' placement must have never tried it. If I put the Outback in Park I can't get my phone out, as it will not slide by the shift lever. I have to place the gearshift back in Drive to remove the cell phone. Subaru tried to go too "techy" on the touchpad/display screen and you have too much to control on the screen and have to go through multiple menus to get to a control. They would have been better off with more actual mechanical buttons. If I could return it and get my money back, I would, as I am that disappointed in Subaru.

The reliability of touch screens in these cars only lasts a few years. My ten year old iPad touch screen works perfectly. The screen in my four year old Subaru is shot. Classic planned obsolescence.

May I know the reason why we don't have the Touring XT in Canada instead of Premier XT? are they the same are different?

Hi Robert, I have two questions. Do you think that Subaru might offer an upgrade option to the head unit that would allow a 2022 Outback to do wireless Apple CarPlay like the 2023's do? I'm supposing if it is a firmware upgrade only, then it could be downloaded, but if it requires upgraded hardware, then the head unit would need to be removed. Second, if and when a software upgrade becomes available for the 11.6" touch-screen, would notice of that be sent to us by email, or would we see it show us in the MySubaru app. on our phone?

Awesome info, thank you! I'm still completely miffed as to why, on the Ascent, Subaru only allows the smart/digital rearview mirror on the Touring mode. The touring model is only 7 seats. Why not make it available on trims with 8 seats....like the ones where you will actually have the mirror view blocked by TWO middle row passengers (2nd and 3rd row)? A company that touts safety, but makes the smart/digital mirror only available on the passenger setup that makes the least sense. We ordered the 8 passenger Ascent because we will have 3 child seats in the 2nd row...blocking our view from the rearview mirror. Would be great to have the digital/smart mirror setup, but nope...Subaru doesn't allow it on that trim. Makes zero sense from a safety, logical or practical perspective. It's purely a move where Subaru tries to make the Touring more attractive. Well I would have ordered the touring if they allow 8 passenger version, which they don't. Just really weird decision on Subaru's part.

They still use potato cameras for the front and rear, worst cameras I ever had in any of the cars I owned.

Not sure why they decided to make the steering wheel volume adjuatment left/right. It's not intuitive at all. "Hey I like this song. Turn the volume....RIGHT!"

The infotainment screen is no good because Subaru can’t get their update software to work correctly. Our 2018 Outback is our 6th and last Subaru because of this. (And the new facial recognition). It’ll be a Toyota next time.

Really not liking all that extra black plastic cladding. They should have left that for the Wilderness model.

220 miles until empty on a full tank?

I have a 2022 legacy. And I really love it. It's roomy and everything. Well I thought that I'd have a full screen Android auto but no I do not. I am angry about it. It's really bad. It's not very responsive. And I have to unplug to re-plug just to get it to work better. And I can't even change my songs when listening to them in AA on the steering wheel. I have to then do the same thing to make it work by unplugging and replugging in. Plus the whole car is just super slow. Yes they had an update. I see some difference and then not at all. I see that. It is still very slow loading up the radio, especially serious satellite XM. Then it will be loading properly but that only happens maybe once in a while. And I can't stand it. I really do not like it at all. So now that Android Auto is a bigger screen with the 23 model. I really really want to upgrade like trade in even though I am financing the 22. I love everything about the new features and the steering wheel looks so much better as well. I do not like that. I also have only half the steering wheel heated. It is very super stupid so can't wait for that too.

Are the tech changes in an update from Subaru, in the same way Tesla does upgrades so nobody misses out? I sure hope so.

That Subbie iPad really sucks! 🤬. Swiping to submenu’s while driving. 😡 By far the worst part of the Outback . And terrible fuel economy. The rest is great.
