Happy soap making everyone! I love this recipe, I hope you do too! Tell me, how do you feel about me doing more relaxed, talk-as-I-go videos like this one? I'd love your feedback! I often worry that they are too long (I'd be hopeless on TikTok 😂) but perhaps I should embrace this format and let my videos be long if that's how they turn out? I know some of my most popular videos of all time are around 30 minutes long! 😬

Wonderful presentation Elly! ( just noticed you made this video more than 12 months ago). I almost went into an hypnotic sleep, such is the tranquil calmness of your voice. I made your first lavender soap at least 6 times and then stopped because lavender essential oil was so expensive to buy. However, now is time for more lavender soap, also using your suggestion of including peppermint oil. Watching George also taught me the idea of including cedar. 🐾🥰

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I’ve searched what citric acid is, and it’s basically black mold, can you chime in on this? I want to make this recipe, looks great, but I don’t want synthetic citric acid that is actually Black mold on my body either. Is there anything else I can use beside citric acid? Also isn’t both forms of LYE in your description, most people trying to make natural soap steer away from the 2 mentioned lye. Basically steer away from LYE period. Is it that toxin to the point we have to wear gloves and goggles? Is it safe enough for our body if you’re trying to make natural soap basically? I’m dying to make soap but so much confusion about lye and citric acid and so on I’m iffy.
@AnestheticsForAna
@AnestheticsForAna Год назад
@@shirleygonzalez4112 I’m not Elly but I am a chemist that works with chemicals everyday and I think I can answer your questions. citric acid is not mold. Citric acid is the acid found in citrus fruits, it’s what makes your mouth pucker when eating lemons or sour oranges. citric acid is byproduct of fermentation, which is actually good because no toxic chemicals are used when industries produce citric acid. If you’ve made sourdough bread or sauerkraut, it’s that fermenting process that produces citric acid. Lye is very dangerous but it is also an essential ingredient to soap making. You cannot make soap without lye, period. Soap is a a salt created when lye mixes with fatty oils. If you are hesitant to handle lye, soapmaking may not be for you. I will say Elly’s soap recipes are really great because she makes sure to use extra fatty oil (super fat) so that absolutely no lye is left after the reaction. This is what super fat is, and it’s wise to always calculate a percentage of super fat into your soap recipe to ensure no lye is left over after the reaction.

This was so fun to make. Thank you for the terrific video! My soap is sitting in its little chilly bin going through the gel phase at the moment. I used Matcha Green Tea powder and Kaolin Clay for the colour. A lovely soft green resulted. I substituted the Sunflower oil with Canola (checked the calculator). I've ordered a 0.01g pocket scales because my kitchen scales hardly register when I weigh the essence oils so I'm not sure I got the quantities right there. @@kathya739 yes I suppose it had that 'fat' smell before and after. I and a few people I gave bars to didn't mind it at all and over time it certainly does mellow. Hi Elly, Im a beginner in soap making and thanks to ur video i could get some confidence in trying out the cold process soap however before i buy all ingredients and make my soap I have couple of questions please do reply if possible . Firstly is lye responsible for the latter we get in soap when we use ? Secondly when we use melt n pour soap which I believe has gone through the lye process , why doesnt it lather much ? Thirdly if we dont have a temperature machine can we make soap without it ? What would be the measurements if we want to make just one soap as a trial and see how it turns out and learn how to handle lye . Can u give us measurements of how much oil which oils to use and how much lye etc to use. Lastly do we need to use distilled water with lye or we can use tap water , would it make difference if the tap water is hard water?

Hi Elly, thank you for sharing wonderful videos. I have a question, I live in a humid, coastal region, and if I use 35-40% olive my soap becomes squishy. What should I do and how to alter my recipe? I want a moisturizing bar without drying.

HI Elly... loving ALL your soaps (think I've tried all of them so far!) I was wondering if you could do a recipe for black seed oil soap (NIgella sativa) and would activated charcoal be good to make it black? I can't find a calculator that includes this oil... thank you lots ❤
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 12 дней назад
Hi, thanks :) I've never come across that oil. I wonder if you can google to find out the saponification (SAP) value? Then you might be able to find a similar oil in a calculator and make a recipe that way. Charcoal is a great way to make the soap black, yes.

In love with this recipe!!! Thank you so much Elly!!! I am new in soap making and I would like to ask something: I bought a strainer for the lye solution, although I have read that I need a stainless steel one, mine is stainless/inox but I don't know if it is made of steel. Is that a problem? Is it going to react with the lye? Thank you very much!!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Год назад
Thanks Christina! I'm not sure what Inox is to be honest! If it says stainless, it's probably ok to use. I've never seen a strainer that wasn't ok to use with lye water.

Thank you for this updated recipe! So far I am just a spectator, but I'm hoping to make my first soap this week or next. Two questions and a request, if I may :) First question: After you cut the soap you place the bars on a metal rack. Since the soap is still somewhat soft, are there ever grid marks on the bottom of the soap? Can you recommend another curing surface? Second question: Can you use a stainless steel bowl to saponify the soap? And lastly, my request: Can you do a video on the clean-up process after making the soap? I've often wonder if it's okay/safe to rinse out the bowls and utensil in the sink. I read a comment somewhere, too, that vinegar neutralizes the sodium hydroxide. I'm wondering if it's a good idea to let the bowls, measuring cups, utensils, etc. soak in a vinegar solution before handling. Thank you in advance!

I have loaf pans which are made up aluminium or some other metal, these are the ones that are often used for baking. So is it alright to use it as a mould for soap? Aluminium and other metals react with the lye and soap so would the soap react with he metal mould once it has been lined with baking paper?

Have tried all your soaps Elly and you always explain beautifully. Its very humid here in Dubai and would love to have more cold process recipes of this kind as Castile and high percentage of olive oil makes the soaps very Guee and soft while using. In my soaps the fragrance does not last - (only during making and curing period) even after including the base cedar. Any tips would be a great help. You are amazing and love all your recipes

Thanks Alpa, yes in your climate you would need to use a lot of hard/saturated fats I think. Thanks for your feedback. It sounds like your fragrances/essential oils might not be well suited to soap making? They should last if you're blending and anchoring them well.
