Are you aware of this video about these viral video pages? The pages like 5 minute crafts and troom troom may just be producing nonsense, based on an algorithm...it's all very very odd but I recommend a watch. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tQq53-g25d4.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wO5p3Fy8yKo.html
I think they don’t specify the amounts because they know it doesn’t work and they don’t want people to try it. Or maybe when people try it, they will blame it on not knowing the exact measurements and not the channel themselves.
It’s not progress to debunk themselves. They’re just hopping on the trend of debunking, since that type of video gets views. They still come out with new videos with lots of false claims.
And the fact that they make debunking videos might even give people the idea that they're more credible and therefore think the false claims are also true
@ You seem to think I am defending 5MC. I am not. I hate 5MC more than words could ever describe. But, the bitter fact is, its braindead clickbait is here to stay. With these debunking videos, the hacks at least have some relation to the truth. I have written letters about content farms to newspaper editors, Google, and pretty much everyone you can imagine. If there is one thing I know it is that youtube LIKES content farms and they are here to stay. These content farms keep people on RU-vid far longer than conventional content and youtube wants that. SO given that they are a fact of life on RU-vid, I'd rather see them do something mildly related to the truth like debunking their own content than complete fiction.
@potterhead let’s not make that a thing. Please. For some couples on RU-vid, it’s funny. Ex. Ethan an Hila Klein. But not for Ann and Dave. However, if you truly believed they were siblings then... no dear. They are genuinely a married couple. They got children of school age who don’t need to be mocked for that sort of thing.
For someone who doesn't know, Al dente is when your spaghetti is soft outside but hard in the middle. It's a type of pasta only achievable by dried pastas
OMG THANK YOU, I tried the first mac and cheese in a mug hack before, and it turned out like yours, but at the time I thought the problem was with me and I literally thought I would never be able to cook well in my life because I cant even do the simple recipes... BUT now I know these were just fake recipes!! THANK YOU
Ann addressed this in an earlier episode of debunking 5MC cooking vids. She said kids and young people would try these "easy" recipes and hacks only for them not to work, and then think they did something wrong and have it impact their self-esteem. I'm glad Ann was able to help you with this discovery. Good luck in your future cooking adventures! Stay strong!
Am I the only one who thinks 5 Minute Crafts is now ripping off Anne's content (that was originally calling them out, lol) by making these debunking videos now? They seem desperate enough to debunk their own content and steal someone else's idea whilst doing it
Kinda. She's not the only one who's doing debunking videos. Lots of youtubers do that too, because they makes much more views than regular content. Views and money are the only things 5 minute crafts/blossom/etc. cares about, so it isn't a big surprise tbh
@@MusumeNeko Yeah, that's how I came across Jarvis Johnson (someone check out his channel, he even has two of them where he talks about these kinds of videos, although his content expanded to fake animation stories etc. as well) and there are many more RU-vidrs who make videos calling out content farms. (Also some try out the fake hacks and of course they fail!)
I love how the clickbait banana chilli watermelon monstrosity is never actually referred back to. Anne's using those content-farms own strategies against them 😆
Imagine being her teenager. Your day sucked. Your girlfriend/boyfriend dumped you, your teacher was an absolute nightmare, it rains on your way back... The only nice thing is that your mom is a tremendous pastry chef. You enter your house with a heavy heart, and you can smell the divine aroma of freshly baked brownies. Sure enough, there's a full tray of them on the kitchen counter. You let your worries wash away and bite into a nice portion. Then it hits you. Rammen Brownies.
Content farms: *makes stupid and potentially dangerous "hacks"* RU-vid: *changes algorithm to promote content farms and not independent creators* Google: *effectively steals someone else's work to make money off of* Ann: Hold my cookie batter.
@@upsilala1776 Google and RU-vid not only capitalize on other peoples work and pay them almost nothing, they have also turned into dangerous engines especially for young people. They promote dangerous hacks and methods on the one hand and on the other promote hatred and division amongst the people. If it pays them money no matter how many times you report it, they never bring it down. That is shameful...
As an American overwhelmed with the over saturation of US politics, I very much appreciate you taking the time to explain the current dispute between google and Australian news sources. I enjoy learning about what’s going on in other countries
It's happening in all countries, America too (plus sites like weather.com are American)! I'm glad she talked about it because I wouldn't have ever thought of that.
But it’s also important to see their doing to everyone. Right now their trying to effect our election and in the Oz their trying to destroy their news organizations. We need to be done with big tech.
An issue with Australian is that it's all owned by the same guy. All of Queensland's news is owned by a single company. This company favours the conservative party, and so they are extremely biased towards our progressive party to the point that they blatantly lie about each party to favour themselves.
I’m really glad she did. I hadn’t heard about this stuff going on until today and this video was from months ago. More people need to know this issue is terrible for people who’re being taken advantage of by google
Right?! She always has some knowledge for us, and she explains it in a way that everyone can understand. They say true intelligence is being able to explain even the most confusing topics to a five year old.
"Eat the food, eat it. Put it in your mouth. It's good. Just put it in your mouth. Eat the food, it's good. Eat the good food." (I cannot unhear it now...)
I don’t know whether to feel sorry for, or be jealous of, Dave. I mean sure he has to suffer Ann’s debunking recipes, but he also gets to enjoy her actual cooking, and I’m positive Ann makes a point of cooking his favourites the day she makes her videos! She seems like the kind of person who would do that 😊
What Google is doing, is absolutely an issue. They are so powerful though, as you said, to care. They are going to keep trying to get away with it until til someone starts a fuss. Im glad Australia is putting up a fight/taking a stand.
Agree too. It's very disturbing how much they get away with it. It's very convenient, yes but it's so greedy and unethical that it makes me uncomfortable
The problem is a lot of Australian news is owned by Rupert Murdoch/News Corp. They have a history of influencing the government and Australia's perception of it's government and leaders, in ways that benefit themselves. For example having a role in sabotaging the govt's attempt at upgrading our internet infrastructure, pushing climate change denial, and minimal reporting on liberal party (conservative) scandals, while constantly slamming the labor and greens party members (moderate and progressive parties).
@@izzy4559 I was just going to say this- both the sides are corrupt in their own way, and the actual who get affected people don't win in most scenarios... While it would be amazing to have unbiased, fact-based news, I doubt any country on this planet has that
I agree it is a huge issue. (And to antholns, people don't choose to publish on Google. Google is a search engine that crawls and indexes content). But there is some legal nuance that is important to understand. In the US and EU (I don't know about Australia), copywrite does not apply to facts. If I measure the temperature and publish it, that fact is free for anyone to use. Creative content (accompanying text, pictures, etc.) is different, but I don't think anyone will be able to stop Google from harvesting data (weather, stock market numbers, birthdays, and so on) and presenting it however they want.
I will add that it is a good thing that facts belong to everyone. Imagine if I was able to, say, measure the height of the statue of liberty and publish it, and then no one else could ever do the same. That would be bad for everyone.
I had to watch it and write a paper on it for a class in college. It’s actually a surprisingly good under the radar movie. Johnny Depp does a classic Buster Keaton routine flawlessly
Ann didn’t mention anything about the thumbnail of the banana with the chilli. She Five Minute Craft-ed us! And I’m here for it. Love Ann and her debunking ways!
Im rewatching this, remembering how important this video was when it came out (the later half of it). Thanks Ann Reardon for using your platform so responsibly
That type of lemonade is really tasty, actually... without the condensed milk, what the hell. Just blend water, sliced lemons, and sugar, then rinse it on its own with no added water. Unless you taste it and it does need more of any ingredient, of course. That bitter, sour, and sweet mix of flavor is actually very refreshing.
I believe they were trying to make Brazilian limeade, which is a drink made with limes, sugar, water, and yes, sweetened condensed milk. It's actually quite tasty, if you dont use the bitter lime rinds. You can look up a recipe online.
Me: Why would you want to eat brownies with noodles? Ann: let's try it Me: yes please, I wanna see it * Thinks 3 seconds* Me: OMG, NOOOOOOO, POOR DAVE! Dave is a really really really good sport
Wow, great synopsis of the Google/Facebook vs. news media issue! I wasn’t sure what it was about, but now I feel way more informed. Was not expecting that on a cooking show, but delighted to learn more. Thanks for that!
Dave takes such big bites when he's given something to test, like at this point you know there's a huge potential for it to be bad, where's your self-preservation, man?! It makes my soul wince.
I've noticed Dave tends to hold back with eggy concoctions. When he tried the "milk carton flan" and the "homemade noodles" he took the smallest bite and spat it right after.
As someone who has taught my kids how to make a microwave cheese bechamel sauce, they didn't add flour or cream, both of which need to be cooked out before you add milk and finally cheese at the end. Adding all that into a cup and pressing start will burn everything to a crisp and scald/separate the dairy before the pasta ever cooks.
I pitty the microwave more than Dave. Ann will make it up to Dave with all the good things she no doubt makes him of camera, but the poor microwave gets so little love with these videos. If her kitchen appliances and utensils where sentient they would run at the very word debunk
I swear they don't even try to make the hacks believable: the 'pencil graphite to diamond' hack produced an ALREADY CUT DIAMOND...what a clever hack it is bigger than the pencil lead AND already cut...plus it is a great hack for lighting a fire on an island because 5 min crafts would probably expect you to have a microwave in your bag the way they are going...smh Edit: omg thanks for all the likesssss
@@andrewbaumann7730 btw it isn't actually lead in pencils, lead is poisonous and has never been used, even in the first pencil. It is actually graphite ✏️
I’ve tried making that last drink called Brazilian Limeade and it’s pretty good when you first make it fresh but when you let it sit overnight, the flavor from the lime rinds makes the drink really bitter. You have to cut the rinds off before putting it in the mixture and blending it.
That "pencil lead + microwave = diamond" hack took 5 years off my life. Even if a damn kitchen appliance could rearrange the molecular structure of graphite, WHY ON EARTH is that "diamond" already cut and polished? Raw diamonds look nothing like that!
5 minute crafts: puts out a new video Microwaves everywhere: * sweat nervously * Seriously, what do these people have against microwaves? It's like they're trying to get people to ruin theirs on purpose
Conspiracy theory: microwave companies want people to spoil their microwaves so people buy more microwave ovens and sales skyrocket and thats why they back thr 5 min crafts bollocks lol
Someone needs to give Dave a Nobel prize for trying out these horrible fails. Also you can make a sweet pasta but do it with vermicelli, it will taste much better
@@yamyampurin I think I still wouldn't put those in brownie batter, that was just nonsensical. If I wanted chocolate-flavoured sheer khorma (which is my region's name for a sweet vermicelli dessert), I'd just add cocoa powder (maybe Dutch-processed?) to the original recipe, and add a little more liquid to keep the consistency. Or just directly add chocolate chips/chopped chocolate to the hot dessert, and go the way of a ganache. Or I'd make a thin chocolate custard/pudding base and add milk-softened vermicelli to that. There are lots of ways (which actually work!) that don't involve baking it into brownie batter
Very honorable of Ann to put this in her video and educate us. I was also unaware of this. And probably more than 90% of the time I don’t click onto the website because the little information I need can be found in the snippets or the link description.
Yea, I just assumed the stuff was just google itself, I didn’t even notice there was a source either because the text was so small. Wow google is scamming people...
@@candacethomas1262 It's the usual British term as well. "Grilled Cheese" can be confusing to a Brit when they hear it for the first time, because a) it's not immediately obvious that it means a sandwich, and b) we wouldn't usually refer to something cooked in a frying pan as "grilled". I'm not sure how popular they still are, but at least into the 90s many British kitchens would have had a "toastie machine" - basically like a waffle iron, but the plates are designed to seal the bread into little triangle sandwiches. These machines would inevitably produce toasties with filings that are lava-hot, so caution was required! These days, people are maybe more likely to make their toasties in a pan, or using a panini press, or perhaps that's just me.
I don’t see anyone mentioning this, but as a person from the USA, I wasn’t made aware of the google issue and I really appreciated that bit of information mixed in with your commentary on a less serious issue. Thank you for keeping us informed!!💖💖
Yea I was thinking the same thing! I feel bad for just assuming that was licensed content in some way - I am totally guilty of using searches specifically to get the weather or covid stats to show up directly in the google search so I didn't have to deal with the sometimes intrusive ads on the actual websites (*cough* weather.com *cough*). I will work to shift to actual apps or websites that I like instead!
It didn't occur to me that Google was essentially stealing other people's content with the featured snippets. They're so convenient but it's true! If Google continues to use them, they should work out a system where they compensate the content creators or websites.
What they dont tell you is they do still get paid for those snippets. Much of the media in AU is owned by Murdoch who is mega greedy and lies through his teeth about everything.
We should all just stop using google tbh. I'd like to stop youtube too because of their shitty policies but honestly that would mean you can't support creators on youtube anymore. Google however is just a search engine so nothing is lost by switching to a different one. i've heard good things about duckduckgo since it has much better privacy policies than google.
Am I the only one who watches Ann make these things and not thinking about whether it works or not, but instead what Dave's face is going to be when he eats it?
I feel like it isn't a matter of Google getting greedy, they have been for years, so much as a matter of them having reached the point where their greed is affecting others to the point that showing up on the first page of Google no longer provides benefit equivalent to what's lost from people not clicking through.
Remember when Google talked about "Don't Be Evil" ... their motto ... then they changed it to "Do the right thing" ... now they need to make another change ... if they give a shit about honesty or integrity ... which they don't ...
Idk who needs to hear this: Ann may share a general goal as the content farms she debunks, but she takes time, does research, and implements expertise and heart. So if you ever felt a disconnect watching these, she makes videos for people, not for views.
I feel grateful for Ann for creating these debunking videos, but at the same time I feel sad for her too. If you notice, you will see that she has already beginning to lose views since she started the debunking trend. From then on, only her debunking videos got the most views, whereas all her other works got much less, instead of them all sharing great views like before. In other words, RU-vid's algorithm is seeing that Ann's debunking videos are what are selling, and only boost them, while neglecting all of her other great works and crafts, thus making them much less harder to come across to viewers. I hope that people will still come to see Ann as a great baker and food expert, not as just a debunker.
This woman is an angel. She makes the video from her heart, while she does have money intent she 100% deserve every penny because of her hard work. She does thorough research, explains WHY something works or doesn't work in an easy-to-understand way, and if possible she explains how to actually do the real thing. This woman is an angel what did I do to get blessed with such amazing content.
Its like youtubers should pay to youtube to use thier plataform, watch videos, make viral videos WAY harder to publish them for free ( cuz not everyone recieve money income for videos). Ironic
Remember, the case is being launched by the Murdoch press and is being looked into by the government the Murdoch press helped get into power. I don’t think what Google are doing is great, but let’s not pretend it’s about some underdog here.
I mean the other side is Rupert Murdoch AKA the guy who owns 90% of the Australian news... so it’s not exactly like Google is stomping on a honest hardworking person either
@@darkmiserythechao A decision against google would set a precedent. Then smaller content makers wouldn't have to pay so much on legal fees and they could swarm Alphabet's legal team.
@@darkmiserythechao and the murdoch press isn't designed to be a cash cow, it's designed to control the narrative and influence public opinion to favour murdoch's goals

The Google thing is infuriating they do that here in the US as well. It sucks and it is very unfair and greedy. Also great analogy at the end with the samples, I was thinking of the same thing.
Google: "Don't use others' content in your videos or else we'll take your money." Also Google: "We have the right to use your content and not pay you a portion of what we make off of it."
if you can afford to sue google you don't need my ad money. Google is trying to provide the best experience to the user. normally id be on the side of the journalist and not the massive billion-dollar company but this reads more like media companies being pissed Google does a better job than they do. did the person who wrote the times article on covid collect and report that data or are they citing someone. is that someone being paid by the times? i doubt it so why should google pay their sources also how much free googling did that times reporter do to get that data
Why does Google’s ad give off the same vibe as the McDonald’s coffee ads when that woman got burnt and sued McDonald’s and won and McDonald’s had to make all these ads making fun of her situation to make everyone turn against her and Make her seem greedy just like google is doing in their restaurant/bus advert
I mean... that lady was also partially at fault. Who the heck thinks it's a good idea to store a hot beverage between their legs in a moving vehicle?? Stupid gets as stupid does. But the fact that it was -that- hot means the rest of the blame was on that specific restaurant. But since it's a franchise, that means it wasn't really McDonald's, the big company, at fault but rather the singular franchisee. I can see why McD's got nasty about it.
@@animeartist888 she was sitting in a parked car and the coffee was past boiling point. Even if it were negligent on her part...McDonalds deserved to be held liable. Also she sued for her medical bills being covered. That isn't terribly unreasonable. And it did come out that keeping the coffee on the heat way past the discard time was common practice at many/most McDonald's.
I'm a paralegal student in the U.S. and we watched a documentary about this case and the consequences that followed in my intro class. Stella Liebeck's son was driving her to McDonald's where she bought a cup of coffee and was given cream and sugar. Her son parked the car so she could put her cream and sugar inside, and the coffee ended up spilling all over her legs. She had second to third degree burns on her legs, and needed skin grafts (as someone who brews her own coffee at home, I've never made or touched coffee that hot). They even showed the graphic pics in the documentary. She sent a letter asking McDonald's to reimburse her over $10,000 in medical expenses. They sent her an $850 check and an apology (I think. A bit foggy on the numbers). She and her family sued for the full medical expenses that Medicare didn't cover (Liebeck was 79 years old). Turns out, McDonald's had been sitting on hundreds of similar complaints about their coffee (and possibly similar injuries relating to the coffee) and did nothing about it. While Liebeck only sued for the over $10,000 of medical expenses, the jury awarded her punitive damages in the amount of money they make in two days worth of coffee sales because they felt the need to punish McDonald's for their negligence. McDonald's had a tantrum and the judge reduced the amount to a small fraction, saying that she was given "too much money." Both Liebeck's family and the jury felt slighted by this, especially since the jury felt the award was fair given the extent of the company's negligence regarding their coffee. Someone in my class asked, "Is that why McDonald's coffee lids are now tough to remove? Is that why they put your cream and sugar in for you?"
Also, you're not supposed to use water any hotter than a light simmer for coffee or you burn it, that's why Mc Donald's coffee always tastes like potting soil. Except I'd rather taste potting soil. Why do they insist on boiling coffee? It's not tea.
@@ladysollua I always felt bad for that lady. Even before I learned the story. And then when I read up on her, it made me really angry. We all have put a drink between our legs. In a thin cup? I bet it wasn't uncommon for the employees to experience heat blisters either.

Thank you - loved this. Interesting thing about Google (which I hadn't thought about but is very true). Regarding the dyed napkin: wool *can* be dyed with food colouring (the artificial stuff like tartrazine and sunset yellow) with a small amount of acid (like vinegar or citric acid). If it's done correctly the water does go clear (just like ordinary dying). It does need to be heated though. So if the soft drink has artificial colour in it then wool can probably be dyed with it. (There is a whole thing of doing "Kool aid dyeing" - but I've not tried that - only food colours).
So a site that has strict censorship rules "for kids" still allows videos that cause fires! The worst thing is the debunking videos probably are enjoyed by kids just the same as the fake videos, so there is zero motivation for the companies to stop. It's worse than that. They release a Debunk video ... The Algorithm offers it to people it knows have an interest in Cooking ... they click for the thumbnail (not even caring what channel it's from). They marvel at the Debunk, and Like. The Algorithm then serves them more videos *from that channel* because they've demonstrated an interest.
And even if it somehow miraculously, against-all-odds, worked, the sand isn't pure. It'd be full of impurities and bubbles and things like that, not like the sea glass they plucked out. @@rebeccaedkins9987 everything about five minute crafts is pain, and when they do show a true clip it’s even more pain because it is either a dream or you know it is a once in a life time chance.
its not even real seaglass, because natural sea glass is NEVER completely smooth, it should have lots of little c shapes in it. most 'sea glass' is probably just tumbled.
@@rachelcookie321 “real” sea glass just refers to sea glass caused by lightning strikes. The c shapes are just from impurities and different parts that didn’t melt in the strike. But after awhile it’ll get smooth from being rocked back and forth in the sand from the waves (like a giant tumbler). But even glass that has been broken on shore and smoothed over time is super cool.

Or maybe news companies can adjust to the times and come up with their own ways to get paid. Print media is dying. They need to get out and into something different
The problem with this issue is that makes Google look like the big bully of the media. Does Rupert Murdoch and Newscorp need more money? They already own the majority of news sources in the Anglosphere and this is just another case of them trying to control their own monopoly of information.
