We’ve brought back the awesome Tesla-powered 2010 Land Rover Defender, and this time we’re putting it up against the brand new Defender 90!
This new Defender 90 has a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that can produce 250hp & 570Nm. It’s packed with incredible tech designed to make off-reading easier, including surface-studying cameras and terrain response. Will this give it the edge over its all-electric rival?
The electric Defender, meanwhile, has been fitted with the motor and inverter from a Tesla Model S. As a result, it can put down 450hp & 450Nm. But thanks to this conversion, it costs a staggering £150,000 - more than three times the starting price of the new Defender 90!!!

@@joelnewton2076 can people actually afford them in Africa? Land Rovers are super expensive even by first world standards when you compare them to JDM 4x4s. LR is almost a luxury brand at this point. In my country I only see them in posh cities exclusively. But 2 wheel drive pickups are everywhere up and down the hills and forests around here.

@@bonzobonanza Not ME! As a former Disco owner and still having a 4wd years later which I tow with and go remote with, the Defender is an antiquated heap of crap. This was nowhere near a relevant comparison whether on price, tyres or whatever. Apart from price, I would love a new Defender as my all in one vehicle but to spec it to a reasonable level for off-road and on road work is way too much for me. So my current car and 4wd will stay for some time yet. But the old Defender is so bad I have never considered it for a second.

So the off-road expert is part of the company that transforms the electric vehicle. It is incredible but it would have been necessary to have someone independent or to take a 2nd person because I am not sure that it is very objective. This does not take away the remarkable experience of the EV

Well, actually the new one is better than the old one, is just that this EV convertiom with huge off-road tires give the old one a huge advantage, but stock vs stock, the new one is better (carwow already made a video comparing both stock)

New one is a joke offroad. All these people get their facts from topgear. Been green laning 4 decades now and the new one falls apart within minutes. They are diabolical offroad even farmers handing them back in as like the range rover it cannot do wet grass. A subaru forester beats all LR vehicles off road tbh. You lot live in an alternate reality far far away from us lot, us lot who actually do it as a hobby.

@@pantherdxn4835 electric in low speeds does way more range than WLTP or EPA test cycles... And electric drivetrain requieres extremely low maintenance, if any... and fewer things to break... So I don't agree why electric would be less reliable.

Give it another couple year's for more used salvage parts along with battery pack prices coming down. Then elktromodz will take over from restomodding. Especially as emissions standards continually tighten up and cities worldwide do more zero emissions zones.

Couldn't agree more. JLR have been very slow on the electric transition after the iPace. Why is that? It's rather sad that a company known for innovation with cars like the E-Type has lacked innovation in this area. Sounds like the board at JLR just don't believe that electric cars will last or that there's something better around the corner. In the meantime they're getting left behind and missing great opportunities like the electric Defender, or Discovery or Range Rover or F Pace or etc. etc.

Land Rover launched the new Defender because the old one has no safety optioons.. But what happened... when the new one came the old defender became more popular...... most of the people still love the old DEFENDER including me... ;-)

Very few people liked the old Defender which is why it sold poorly around the world. That is a fact. Apart from a few old diehards most LR people recognise that the newer LRs are better off road and light years ahead on road. The old Defender was a right pain to live with. The new one is a brilliant allrounder. No contest.

I kind of expect to get help for a nice guy in a defender when my car is stuck. No problem mate, I will just hook up this winch...... Oh, the new defender didn't even come with a winch, and it has almost normal road tires so it will not get the grip needed to pull out any stuck car. Yes, the new one is much nicer to drive long distances, because it is an SUV as a base. But when you really need the qualities of a defender in the wilderness I am not convinced that it will do the job.

After watching the Litebrite channel, it seems electric models aren’t very practical for off-roading since they need to fit bigger tires and then deflate them for better grip and the range is reduced by almost 80%..and there are no charging points in the wilderness…

This channels history of 4x4 content is simply the worst on the Internet. Mat ended up on green laner forums because of his previous diabolical vids of 4x4s, to which they pointed out all the stunts he pulled in order for one to win. You cannot ever unsee the fact on the first "new vs old defender" vid they tied the rope down low on the old one and up high on the new one so the old ones back wheels got lifted up during the tug of war. He also claimed it had no traction control system, which it did as it was the 2014 model, it was the TCS system that caused it to bog down and lose while Mat lied his face off.

Off-road EV's should be equipped with roof mount solar panels, so that even if you run out of power during off-roading the car can charge again and not get you stranded.

Do you realise how long it takes even a claimed 100w panel and charge module takes to top a battery off? You would need 3 large 1meter panels to top a battery off within about 5hr 🤣 the ones you see on RVs and boats barely maintain the battery when you leave the stereo on or if the bilge pump is having a wet day. Anyone who thinks solar panels can charge large batteries quickly needs to stop talking about electricity immediately. Some of the top end solar panels are just about managing half the claimed output.

Just because an object protrudes does not make it phallic, unless you're the host of CarWow. I'd take the electric version only because if you are going to go off road, do it right. Yeah Matt, it will be interesting a new LR with electric motor. Is may be very close to reach it, think that Jaguar (owned by Tata like LR) is decided to stop standard vehicles production and produce only EV. So Land Rover is pretty close to do the same using Jaguar experience.

I recently drove a diesel for the first time in ages, omg, I forgot how agricultural they feel. Anyway, looks and drivetrain goes to the old Landy ev conversion.

not sure what ur talking about, a nice 3l 6cyl diesel engine feels very nice and smooth to drive, better than some petrol engines

You’ve obviously not driven a good diesel engine then. Try driving something like a bmw x5m50d the diesel engine in that is sublime!

They did an amazing job with the old defender. I would actually like the old 1 with a diesel, not that the electric is bad it's just more practical to have a diesel or gas engine especially way out in the middle of nowhere. If you run out of gas or whatever at least someone can be some out to you. No one can actually bring a charge out to you. But again it's gorgeous.
