SCOTT WITH DALLAS PAINT CORRECTION & LUXURY MICROFIBER HELPS NEW DETAILERS SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE WHEN SETTING PRICES AND HOW TO BUILD WEALTH IN AUTO DETAILING luxurymicrofiberstore.com/
You, my friend, speak the truth. I've been a Pro Detailer for 15 years, detailing for 20 years. 6 figure income, and if people think I'm too pricey, well you get what you pay for. Move along. My time is very valuable, just like yours.
Bryant M Charging what you’re worth is extremely important, but at 16, be honest about what you’re worth. Detailing is a skill that needs to be developed over time, so unless you’re a savant, really look at how quality your work is and charge based on your ability. Good luck to you bud!
I charge 150-200 for full interior I And I think I'm too cheap. Funny one guy was mad at me for my prices and said "someone can do it for 20 bucks" he even called him and said proudly 20 bucks. He says he washes 8 cars a day and I said I do 2 cars a day and make $300 minimum and he just told the client over the phone "I gotta go I'll talk to you later" 🤣🤣🤣🤧
This may be the best video you've done, Scott. I'm not a professional detailer, but the advice you have given here is applicable to just about any small business. Thanks for everything you do!
Yep, your absolutely right - Scott's advice can be taken to pretty much any business model. If your good at something, its worth money - never undersell yourself when providing professional services.
Took me years to get over the fear of asking for money. After I stuck my neck out and demanded a fair price, I found I got better customers and made much more money. Great advise. Get past your fear.
At the end of the video I just sat there looking at the phone! I feel like we had a 1 on 1 convo and you were telling me to get it together. Thanks Scott 👍🏾
Scott one of your BEST video's -- Hands Down! Back in the day 20-yrs ago.....I "turned-down" potential customers who wanted me to compete with the car washes, they either wanted me to "remove" services from my basic packages for a cheaper price or they threatened to go elsewhere (bye-bye). I held my ground, especially for the trashed vehicles or customers who waxed their car with "floor wax" or ran through a wet tar road (it was xtra). Even though I needed the money, I turned them down if they didn't pay for quality, just not worth my total-effort. It paid off/booked solid w/boats/$700-1k a day.....
Great points. As a young detailer in business for 2 years now, your points about 401k and Health Insurance are spot on! Making money is easy but building wealth is hard. If you really want to build wealth, save for retirement, pay Uncle Sam, pay for health insurance, and still have time for family you HAVE to charge a premium. My service is flawless and I know what my time is worth. Thank you for this video and hopefully people take your advice!!
You know, 8 months ago I started detailing vehicles and this video is one of the first videos that caught my mind when I fist started detailing. I live in an state where people charge between $80 to $140 for full (interior and exterior) detail and that’s how I started. I started with a all purpose cleaner and a brush and the amount of work that needed to be done almost made me quit. This video got me up and I started charging people more. I went from $120 to $160 and I made a lot of profit where I bought new machines. I followed the (every 6 month) give yourself a raise. I also run a small business for computer repair and did the same. I got a couple feed back saying I’m expensive, and yes, I indeed am, but instead of charging $80 I was charging people $160 which was equivalent to 2 cars. You just have to work smarter and not harder. I gave myself a raise from $160 to $250 and trust me, the money you see coming in will give you motivation to work even harder. I went from cleaning with a small brush to buying an extractor and a steamer. You do not need a $1000 extractor machine to start detailing, it’s the amount of work you will have to go through in the beginning. If you have the money to spend thousands of dollars in machines them great, but work your booty off first and you will get there.
In the home renovations business for most of my career....and everything you just said applies to us as well. Its true that I have to overcome cost objections because of “hank the handyman” that has “bid” a job for 1/3 to 1/2 what I do it for. But that guy will, when it comes to paint for instance, shoot some paint and hit the road. We remove all switch and receptacle covers, towel bars etc in bathrooms, vanity lights in bathrooms. When we are doing complete renovations of bathrooms or kitchens we pay attention to the details....even paying for a professional final clean of the clients entire home in order to clean any remaining dust. We also demobilize everyday of a project. We use drop clothes from front door to project location within the home. When you provide a complete service that holds value to the client....they WILL pay for that service. The next biggest issue is what you speak of that business itself is a separate entity. Seeing things this way helps me also determine, based on work load, whether I physically do the work or possibly sub-contract that particular scope of work. Absolutely EVERYTHING that was said in this video is correct.
Excellent video Scott!! I have been detailing for over 15 years and still find myself under charging at times. People don't realize how long each step takes. I do every car like it is my own...and that is both good and bad. Thanks for advice!
Perfect timing I'm planning on starting a detailing business in the next 30 days and working on my packages now. Thank you for all your videos Scott!!!
I’ve never seen your channel before. I just wanted to let you know that this video added value to my life. I learned a lot and I will definitely subscribe!
Thank you Scott I love the fact you handle your audience with straight forward answers appreciate this video and your advice so much we need more people like you thank you so much.
Great video Scott! I operate my own detail business as well. I struggled with this in the beginning, I was doing cars for what seemed like pennies, because I was afraid people wouldn’t see the value in the service I was providing. I’m happy to say that, I have just about 1 year in business, I’ve made a name for myself in my area, with top notch interior details, and my profit margin has grown immensely.
Man oh man! Well said, well informed. I've only raised my prices by 10. I am in a low income city, but like you said I need to be paid what my service is worth. Thanks we love you Scott!
For those of us who don’t have Facebook, I must rely on your videos. You are absolutely right Scott! Here in Florida, the shit work people do, and the customers accept are for a general statement, is rubbish. I would have paid for what I want, but there was no one I could find to even clay my car. Now, in part, thanks to you, my vehicles are incredibly clean and shiny. Now, I have people coming from all around due to word of mouth. I am PROUD of my endeavors, and I have no problem telling people the value of my time.
Scott your videos are unbelievable informative! I love the way you talk about things and I can fully understand even if English is not my primary language 🤗
Wow … just saw this video. I recently started a detailing business. Invested about $6,000 to get started. I knew I didn’t want to do $40 car washes. It would take forever to get my ROI. This video reconfirms what I felt all along .. thanks. I subscribed immediately . Great video
Scott, i’ve been stuck and you’ve nailed every stuck thought in my head. I’ve been sitting on supplies for quite a while now and this video has changed my perspective and knocked out my fears. I don’t think anyone could have said what you have better.
I'm 16 looking into starting a business in auto detailing. I'm near a few extremely wealthy neighborhoods that gave me inspiration to try this. Thanks for all of this straight up information about the basics of staring a detailing business, you provide a lot of clarity to us newcomers.
Thank you for this video. I have 15 years experience in the detailing industry, working for other people. I got away from detailing for a few years. About 3 months ago, I decided to start my own business. I’m still in that stage of building my clientele. You have answered all of my questions about my future business decisions. Thank you for sharing this information!
Scott always gives the best advice. No lies or non-sense. People should pay to keep their cars in good shape, it pays off in the long run for the customer also. I have my Corvette in car shows all the time and I use his advice to detail my car as well as other cars and I only do this for fun.
Thx. I now have a routine with my car . And my neighbors see me and say "how much do you charge to keepy car like that !" Now I'm thinking to become a detailer. Not just a glorified car wash. Thx for your heart felt wisdom.
I'm in Bakersfield CA. Weather is going to get over 100 degrees do you recommend a wax ( carnuba paste , spray ,ext ) or just sealer ? Any input is appreciated.
Thank you brother. I love you for putting this out. Seriously. I've been in a mental battle with myself about whether I should raised my prices even higher and have been in a scarcity mentality. I've decided to do the right thing and charge what I'm worth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
This is such a great video. I'm in the beginning stages of starting my own detailing business. I took your pricing and compared my median income to your area and then adjusted my prices accordingly based on that ratio difference. Thanks for this video!!!!!!
im in orlando im gettin my lic this week and in process of making my packages omg i cant tell you how crazy it was to see this video and your right, plus im 40 not young buck so im getting into this late however i need for you if possible to make a vid soon on how do you go about your maintenance clients, price wise and your schedule time frame for maintenance client. it would of been very hard for me to do this without you oscar and wilson your very appreciated here
Tommy Mastin All these questions you have would be answered once you started working. Find customers 1st & most important, do your absolute best with each task & you should from that get some repeat business but start working. I was lucky starting out, I got a part time valet job at local golf course @ age 44 & 8 years later I'm full time with my detail business. Back then I had no license or insurance just a trailer with everything & charged $25 for wash, vac, windows, & tire shine... I'm in SouthFl now but long ago lived in Orlando, there are so many golf courses that need someone like you each week, & you have the clients car 4-6 hours while their playing golf. Maybe start like me by getting a job there or talk to headpro in exchange for cleaning their car for free, let you come each week. Best of luck!
When I was a kid in California I charged 35.00 for a big car inside and out and hand wax using my dads boat and car supplies...I was so excited ! Til my dad said "all that expensive stuff you used its just not worth it"...that car looked so good. I was only 12 then...it took 2 days work ...
This is just the video I was looking for!! Thank you! Starting my mobile detailing this month getting all my things together . But this is just what I needed and thank you!
Hey Scott. I need to say. Thank you, thank you so much. About 6 months ago I saw this video. Now I’m charging about double for my services and I’m getting more customers than I was. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your knowledge. I’m at a better place right now because of your words of encouragement. Thank you.
Thanks man, needed to hear this my dad has his own detailing business pretty successful I recently branched out on my own, doing this as a side gig now. I now have my accounts while working a full time regular job, but I'm in this position where I don't know how to charge. This video helped me out alot. I'm that guy right now that has been stuck for 2 years charging the same.
Wow!.....did I ever feel like you were talking directly to me on this. I needed to hear it for sure! I just started my business this year because I HAD to. I have always done it as a side gig for about 10 years and charged next to nothing but I also didn't KNOW a whole lot either. This year alone I have been teaching myself how to cut, polish and do paint corrections. Went and had a ceramic coating training. Certified GlassParency installer and I am CONSTANLTY looking at how to improve my skills. I feel I do pretty good work but others think I do fantastic work...I also beat myself up all the time. I am my own worst enemy with being a perfectionist. But I also need to start charging what I am worth. I have been charging $25/hr and doing estimates in person only...but now I am getting faster so it's starting to hurt me. Thanks for this video!!
Of all your videos that I have watched in the past 5 months. I have got to say that this is the BEST one of them all. I have over 30 years of experience and I always learn something new from you. Thank you so much for this video, keep up the great work. God bless.
Thank you so much Scott starting my detailing business this year with no help and this video has spoken to my heart. You speak truth and wisdom and I thank you
I have been in the detailing industry for 14 years and this video is a must for all new detailers or for those considering becoming detailers. Yes, I made many of the same mistakes that were discussed, but with a wealth building attitude I was able to get out of that trap. This is a business and so many new men and women fail to concentrate on the business side of detailing. Thank you for the video. This is the information that needs to be put out there. There are tons of videos about products, polishers, and should I use this or that. The information in this video is far more important for the health and wealth of your company than all those "how-to" videos. I am now a subscriber and will continue to follow you. Ron Holbrook Ron's Vehicle Detailing Thomasville, NC
Thank you Scott! You have given me so much honest info over the past week since I've been watching your videos. I am starting my new business as a detailer with a different mindset now. "Know your worth."
Love this video! Absolutely right you got to offer something no one else has to offer, specializing is key specially when you make a name for yourself and attract the supercars!
Hey Scott! Been watching auto detail videos for a few weeks and have been wanting to start this business and your video came across my feed. That helped me a lot because I had no idea of where to start with pricing etc ! Thank you so much! Keeping it real 💯
Thank you for this video Scott! It helps me for sure stand behind what I would charge for an exterior detail and I'm not afraid to ask what I want, and when they say that's too much I tell them to go to the car wash or do it yourself but. I have a co worker that wanted his 92 Chevy truck polished and sealed etc. When I told him the price his jaw dropped, it wasn't some astronomical amount either anyone with a job could pay for it I told him it's going to take product, wear n tear on my machine also my body and about 6 or 8 hours so I feel like I'm doing the right thing and not doing it for his price and standing up for myself. Thanks again
Thank you for being real and honest about being a detailer. I wanna start detailing but I've been afraid cause i don't have much experience doing this and didn't know what a basic wash consist of until i watched your video you being blunt about the game has encouraged me to start moving THANKS Scott keep doing what your doing it's touching and changing lives
Thank you for the message! I will apply with my business! I appreciate someone I can look up to and push me forward! Thanks for the video and appreciated your content!
THANKS i have been working on making my detailing business and this one of my favorite videos you've done your still one of my fav and big influence on my businesse
I’ve been doing detailing at my cousins shop for about a year and a half now, I went to school and got certified in detailing and am ready to go out on my own, we only do details every Tuesday and Thursday and I watch a lot of customers leave not impressed with having to wait months out to get their vehicle done. This video is very helpful
scott this is absolute gold and this needs to be drilled home to so many new detailers and potentials. Many have made the mistake of being cheap but they will get all the bottom feeders and will be burned out eventually. all detailers in america are worth $60 to $100 per hour in the USA, perhaps even more depending on skill level. this really impresses me to see you talk about this scott, it's great to have you in this industry I love and have been a part of for decades. providing true vehicle surface care is ultimately what detailers do. delivering value for money, quality of work and results that are real is what made me succeed with very little marketing skills and business knowledge early on. too many just clean and make every surface shiny. that's not true surface care. We are all valuable and worth much more than so many think their worth.
This was super motivational. Im just getting into auto detailing and ive learned alot from watching your videos. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge for us beginners
Scott I respect you so much the fact that you will be straight up. Not afraid to let people know the truth. There's not a whole lot of people that will have the balls to do it. So much respect. And thanks again for all the extremely helpful and videos with just so much knowledge. Keep up the good work. Look forward to many more of your videos!!! 👍🏽
Thank you for this sir. Been watching your videos for the past few months getting ready to take the dive and this is the cherry on top I needed. When I make it I’ll shout you out for sure.
Wow thanks for the advice! I need to overlook at my packages and prices. Also I want to point out that I'm not a full time detailer I only do this part time so that should be even more of a reason to not be afraid to up the prices and offer a more detailed job.
This is a very good, important point - what I realised was that if your prices a lower then people "assume" you are part-time and that the quality of services will probably be lower. If your prices are realistic and proportionate (as Scott correctly states) then there is a perception of quality - regardless if you are part-time or full-time. Consider this - two tins of Baked Beans. One is 30p and the other 89p - which do you consider being the better quality? Both tins may actually have exactly the same product inside, but the 89p tin has a perceived higher quality. Your prices also reflect your brand an image.
Scott I want to thank you for this video! I really needed to hear this. You’ve opened my eyes to the bigger picture. I’m definitely going to put this to action!
HAHAHA, this is why you see many many many trailers for sale with a vac, tank, pressure washer, and generator in California "for sale". They are the car wash $25 guys. They get burned out washing cars for 12 hours a day. People get car wash and detail mixed up
Scott if I could love this video I would, I definitely give it a thumbs up. I'm a weekend warrior and feel my time is really valuable. I have been struggling with upping my prices because of the area and what I here other "detailers" offer. Than I look at my work and think to myself I am definitely better than most. Now this video has encouraged me. U r awesome man, thanks again for all the videos u do.
THANK YOU. It does not only apply to detailing, it applies to any business. A couple weeks ago I told one of my sisters that I needed to kick my own ass into movement. I'm really glad you made this video. IT'S A KICK IN THE BALLS BUT A NEEDED ONE.
Great reminder Scott! My mentor told me that years ago “don’t be that guy!” Why be Walmart when you can be Louie Vuitton! Get paid for great work and be the best instead of being the cheap guy. You attract better clients, not the cheapskates for the same amount of work.
I just did a complete detail on a referral by a customer. I did like 3 months back. Gotta say Scott it feels good to make that money. And have a satisfied customer at the end of the day. I was at an apartment complex. So I had to use my generator feels good to have the right tools For the right time and place. Took me a bit more then usual due to issues I had with generator but got it all done. I up my price like you said like 2 weeks by 20%. And I love doing what I'm doing. thank you sir godbless. I will be waiting for your next video. 👍👍👍👍
Even though this video is 2yrs. It has given me more insight abs a lot more advice. I’m staring from the ground like literally trying to get it started. So thank you for this.
I needed to see this video. I haven't even started yet and I get the opportunity to hear this wisdom. thank you for answering my questions and making my business endeavor a little easier.
This video changed my attitude about business. I totally agree with you! You are so correct in what you say! I am charging more and getting those high end clients already. This video is great, you are the man!
Absolutely correct approach for any business. Bravo Scott. If you aren’t making money, it’s not worth wasting your time. Know your expenses and that includes the cost of your time and effort.
Great info! I've been in the business for 25 years and this is something I have learned the hard way. Worked my tail off but I have not created any real wealth. Now that I'm older and wiser I don't give my services away just for pocket money anymore. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video Scott, if you do quality work with quality products you need to get quality money, it’s that simple. Did my first headlight restoration today an 07 Sonata
I'm charging $65 with "$5 off with my flyer". Wet sanding by drill with multiple grits, compound polish, sealant wax with uv protection. No clearcoat but an aftercare guide with product suggestions to ensure long term clarity. Using chemical guys products and everything else off of Amazon. My city is FLOODED with oxidized headlights. They are everywhere! I'm going to shoot for 5 cars a day 5 days a week. Each job takes around an hour to 1.5 hours. Did before/after pics on friends cars to show as my "happy customers" on business FB page and Instagram. Got a shirt made with business name on it for $25. 50 flyers cost $33. Passing them out by hand everywhere I see an opportunity for a job. Walked up to woman at grocery store expressing concern that she can't see at night due to her headlights and she needs my services. Got that job. Good luck.
Those are really great infos Scott, Thanks for sharing. As I am meticulous I cannot charge 40-50$ for just a cleaning but your example of basic detailing is a great one. I am in thinking to do a detailing business even if there is a lot of competition here in my city and that’s why I want to be different than others so your informations/tips are just in time !!
