Loved the way the Ford man couldn't bring himself to say ' yes this is a shared VW platform ' , maybe he would be vaporised instatantly if he said the 'vw' word 🤔 😂😂
I am sick to death of SUV after SUV. I had a drive in a Twizy 80 yesterday, enough car for most journeys and no more. It felt fun drive drive. Costs nothing to run, nothing to maintain, park anywhere, and can get a a Twizy plus all my other junk in my garage, where's this bloatmobile wouldn't even get in the door. The world needs more small Twizy style cars and less of these samey huge SUVs designed by someone who thinks in corporate buzzwords.
Hopefully this is essentially a mass-market MEB-platform car without the awful infotainment on the Volkswagen/Seat/Skoda offerings. That would be something to get excited about, considering how good that drivetrain can be. Still holding out for the ID.3-based Focus, though ;)
So soon the cheapest smaller Ford will be a 30k Puma. I hope that the Renault 5 is a big hit and forces Ford to come back to the segment it is abandoning
I'd love one - it seems like a cross between the Ford FLEX and the Fisker Ocean. Europe only? That's quite a bit of a disappointment. Hopefully they bring it to the States with a different name - Falcon maybe?
Another great video, thanks Jonny! I find it frustrating that they aren't bringing this model to the US. The US needs more options for eco-friendly SUVs (I wish people wouldn't buy SUVS here, but they do, and that's not going to change any time soon).
I started playing wank word bingo listening to the marketing guy. There wasn't a prize after hearing 5 mins. That aside, looking forward to seeing it down under. My Model 3 is approaching 3 years old and I'm looking forward to seeing a decent Ford product. I'm a Ford guy through and through.
I've got an Edge and a Ranger at the moment. With the kids getting older, and not needing buggies anymore, this would be a good fit and size for us. I think in the right spec and colour (im not a fan of that metalic mint colour) it could be great. Interior looks loads better than the ID. Series cars from VW. Although I'd rather a wheel for volume controls than a touch/slider.
I've been a VW driver for more than 30 years, but I'd take this over an ID.4 or ID.5 every day of the week. The interior is just so far above the ID.4, it's remarkable! I hope the pricing is in line with the VW.
sadly they ford went with capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel just like VW did. but yeah. it looks better than the ID4. now let's just hope that they didn't sacrifice range for the better looks. also how the hell did they manage to have less bootspace than an octavia while having a way bigger vehicle?
@@oliverstemp9132 yeah being smaller doesn't mean much regarding aerodynamics. an f150 is significantly more aerodynamic, as in has a lower CdA, than a lamborghini countach with the rear wing despite being way larger.
I agree, but that is much of corporate America now. People are conditioned. I lived in the US for 11 years and it was such a false environment and I felt like I was surrounded by parrots. To clarify what I mean, even if this person doesn't reside or originate in the US, he will be influenced by Ford corporate culture and the way he is instructed to present the car. Maybe I am being unfair to him specifically and was too quick to comment, but it was what I got from the video.
He did a good job I thought. Not everything is about jokes and banter. (Although an electric, Europe-only Ford Explorer is as much of a joke as a car can be.)
Hey Jonny. Thanks for the vid mate. Great job, as ever 👍👍👍. Always enjoy the content, whichever vein it may be - reviews, mods, finds - but I like it best when you find an old Ford hiding in a hole somewhere 😁. I've one little favour to ask, can you publish your vids with a louder volume level? For some reason they're always fairly quiet and are better with headphones. And no, it's not my phone, or ears 😂. For instance, the Black Circles voice ad about halfway through really jumped up in volume, then it all went quiet again. Seeing as we hang on your every word, it'd be nice to hear you more easily. Again, thanks for the share 🙏🙏🙏. 😎
Great! Another faux SUV electric vehicle with a (highly likely) affordable price of £40000 and a (highly useful) range of 250 miles! Not sure the market needs another vehicle like this as it’s already saturated with very expensive and low range (compared to ICE) electric vehicles!
Well it’s better looking than the bland IDs at least and might well be the change in direction they need to make money in Europe. You gotta love designer speak “we’ve scaled up the logo” translation: we made the badge bigger FFS😂
I think I prefer the look of the Explorer to it's VW ID cousins. Interior quality looks better too. Side note: Another great video but please sort the audio.. The dialogue is very quiet yet the Black Circles plug is really loud?!
I love the design language of the whole package and the fact that there’s no fake grille at the front. A thing that BMW, Audi and others seem to be stuck with.
The front end looks awful and cheap and like a toy car. I don’t get why automakers are making EVs that look stupid. And I’m over the whole car into suv thing. This “explorer” is an insult to the traditional explorer
for an SUV this doesnt look too tall, I am getting ever more convinced that the motor industry is gradually morphing SUVs into estates in the pursuit of efficiency (thankfully because SUVs are disgraceful). according to the specs ive found this is only 150mm or so taller than my volvo V50 estate. with 19" rims and a 3" drop in the suspension (can quite easily see that much arch gap) you'd have yourself a nice looking estate car. by the time i actually get round to getting an EV im sure there will be plenty to choose from that with a little suspension drop i'd be quite happy with something like this.
So Ford is basically saying - "Hey remember the affordable, fun to drive cars that we're known for like the Fiesta and the Focus? Well we're going to replace them with SUVs based on a VW platform!"...Just brilliant stuff.
so they will ride terribly and have terrible electrics. VAG cars are becoming well known for it. ive known it for over a decade now, but the VAG fanboys are finally waking up!
Ford will go extinct in Europe if they continue down this path. Jeep have proven there is limited interested in American looking SUVs in the European market. That said most manufacturers are dumping small cars as they go EV. Sure there are some packaging challenges but it also points to laziness. What’s the point in going EV to be green if the weight and size doubles?!
I was fortunate enough to get to explore the Explorer at the Women Drive Electric launch of the vehicle last week and not only was it an interesting experience as my first ever launch, but also how the marketing and styling of the vehicle was explained to us - we had the wonderful Cerife show us around the car. Completely different to what I usually look at but I can definitely see the appeal of it!
I'm not sure about the Tupperware styling nor that it is going to appeal that much to the former Focus buyers that Ford's model range has abandoned, but an interesting vehicle nonetheless.
So that’s the focus replaced by a SUV then.. RIP. We are becoming more American in our tastes here in Europe if you believe we are demanding these cars. Also when the EV came along as a viable technology we were promised that the flexibility of the EV drive train would give us all new innovative shapes and designs. All we seem to be left with so far is boring SUVs which are less innovative and practical than the outgoing cars. Sold a dream given a SUV blob.
When you think of ford's from the 80s and 90s compared to this new era of fords its sad. Just think of all the RS turbos, the cosworths, XR2i, 3, 4 etc.. sierras, fiestas, capris and escorts! They all had versions that we grew up loving. Ford basically selling white goods now 🥱
A european designed, european built, european only car but they keep going on about how it has american heritage, and styling, odd decision by Ford, Ford used to be considered a European brand in Europe and they did very well because of it, they are now pushing how American they are, considering how well other American car manufacturers have done in the past in Europe it really is odd.
Thank you Johnny for a really nice first look at the Explorer. It looks a great looking and practical vehicle for the masses. Just hope it is nicely priced.
That designer sucked all the charisma and charm from what is a pretty good-looking car. His monotone voice sounded like he was reading an autocue written by Ford HQ. No excitement, no passion. Corporate beige slave. Such a shame, as what they have done is made something that looks utilitarian, but still modern. I like it, but I think the designer would have had a meltdown if you asked a tricky question or said something negative.
Funny that the designer clearly didn't want to mention that it's built in the VW platform, yes was happy to subtly throw them some.shade.with reference to the illuminated buttons. As long as it doesn't have ANY of the VW groups utterly shite infotainment software, they'll be onto a winner I reckon.
the shield and grill are its down points with this model, the shield is just to big, and the grill ruins the front, ford have always been know for a semi stylish look, this just looks like a box on wheels that comes out of first gen korean/chinese clones, to me it looks like a blown up soul, thankfully they ditched id's info-ertainment, but still got stuck with just two window buttons. Why ford it ruins the car, it needs a lighter interior trim option especially for eu and uk models as well as the shown dark, also for the boot add some down lights into the reverse of the boot so you can see better at night when loading preferably with led lights, also with the pano roof, please add an optional sun roof /moonroof opening version too, to many manufactures are deleting this option , also its not shown but does the glass roof have a motorised sun shade as well, as thats a deal breaker in strong sun or parked in direct sunlight baking the interior
For the love of God- the first mid range company to get an estate car with 300 mile range and useable (and not stupidly filled with useless tech and a massive tablet) for sub 30k will corner the market. Why ANOTHER SUV?
Good video, but what are Ford doing? Another bland, SUV EV - hardly inspiring or orginal. The only innovation here seems to be a moving touchscreen (oooh!) when quite honestly I'd rather have some physical buttons. Ford do not sell a single vehicle I'd be interested in buying anymore - and I've been a serial owner for nealry 30 years.
Too small, low luggage capacity, low range, excessive charging time, too expensive for the real world... finally, you'll never get 200K miles out of it or over 10 years before it's valueless! How about a Diesel-Electric hybrid?
I’m don’t like it, I’m sure the SUV lovers will love it. For me it looks boring ( yet another SUV) ). It will be too expensive, the range on EVs still aren’t great on long journeys expect maybe Teslas. Come on you know you could make a an attractive and interesting sporty little number.
Explore what? Every kurb in the school car park? This thing is basically an Evoque and I hate it. Why does it have massive wheels with sport contact rubber band tyres?!
Could have really done without the suit wanking on about the "stance" and "Presence" and "Shield". Uuuuugh bore off and let Johnny work his linguistive magic free of marketing doubleplusgood spiel.
shhh, Ford paid lots of money to some privileged troll changing out the VW logo 🤣🤣 Buy one, use one, don't complain. Soror and Schwab wish you a happy life, just keep complying 🤣
What a piece of toss, Ford somehow think that pushing American cars on the world is going to work and I really don't think it will. Maybe we have all moved on, but they tried with the Edge only recently and that completely failed.
Reminds me of a Discovery Sport from the side, and you can tell its based on the MEB platform as the proportions are very similar to the ID4. Nice enough but moulds into the bland world of the current crop of SUV's.
I don't like it. The wheels are too big. It looks like a bar of soap in this colour. I couldn't have gone along with the marketing bullshit. I couldn't even watch the whole video. But Johnny, I still like you and will continue to watch your channel. 👍
The interior is a step up from the current VW ID range (although VW is going to be upgrading the interior soon to the ID3 and the iteration after that should get rid of the current infotainment system). I prefer the looks of the explorer over the ID 4. I'm pleasantly surprised. What they price is at is key.
Looking at this I'm reminded of Jonnys Element. Still to date nothing beats the design and function of the Element IMO it just needs to be electrified.
As a former car designer myself, I'd say they did a very good job inside and out. If they get the price and range just right, I can easily see Ford selling all the Explorers it can make.
@@kurtfader as a former detective inspector I can confirm you are correct. I used to doodle concept cars in 5th grade too though does that make me a former car designer 😂
I feel like they all got offered slightly different pitches. Suspect FC boys had to get an earlier look and be embargoed due to FC live based on what they had to tell versus the other two.
Get rid of the Haptic Feedback buttons, and the Gloss Plastic, reduce the price by 10k, and you will already be on a winner. Hopefully trully to see this on the roads by 2025. Yes, 2025 is the more realistic time frame.
Complete corporate waffle, I’m a lifelong Ford owner but anyone who thinks that as the guy said, people will love this, needs to get their head examined. Loved the way he hesitated on replying regarding the platform… the world and his wife know that the platform is VW’s MEB. I fail to see how as he said this is aFord when half the interior controls are straight from VW without making any attempt to at least disguise them. This is a HUGE disappointment from Ford, real shame where the company is heading…
It must be hard as a designer to walk round a Car that is hailed as a fresh look and Ford DNA and it basically looks like a Land Rover Discovery 😂 It looks like every other SUV let’s be honest you could put a Hyundai or Nissan badge on that and no one would dispute it. The Model name is on the front because it looks so generic to everything else. Real world 300 miles is needed by the time this comes out. Plush door handles would be a good start and maybe a rethink on the big mirrors.
And they are not going to sell it in the country that is the birth home of Ford…..this makes sense how exactly? Now if they could just give it a 500 mile range, 10 minute full charge capability and an infrastructure that WORKS all the time, I might consider one. In kalifornee the governor pushes electric cars and then asks people to AVOID charging their electric cars…..hummm? I will stick to my sq8 for now thanks.
I used to own a 1999 ford explorer XLT with the 4.0 v6 efi engine. That was a brilliant car ,this is just an ID4 in a fancy dress .and I'm a proper old skool ford fan .this does nothing for me .I really miss the time when ford would design and build its own cars ,this is just ford cheapening it's brand .
