I see a lot of wealthy middle managers going for luxury spec trucks to tow luxury 5th wheels since the explosion of RV camping popularity during Covid; there is a reason manufactures are charging ridiculous amounts, but still sell better then pre-Covid. The gap between the “rich” and the “poor” grows every day, and trucks are marketed to the highest bidder.

Let’s be honest. The person buying the Platinum Tremor isn’t actually using it for a work truck. It might tow a camper or a boat now and then. Great video! Really interesting that the base truck had more features than the top of the line trucks that were available back in the 1990s. Id go basic truck every day. The costs of top of the line make zero sense and these trucks only exist because of easy credit and people being conditioned to pay $1200/month for 72 months. Thanks for making this video. Re: headlights. My truck has halogen headlights. My wife's SUV has LED headlights. I prefer the halogens. The halogen lights give off enough light and they eventually fade out the farther out in front. So there's a more gradual difference between the lighted area and darkness. While the platinum super duty is a really nice truck with a lot of features, I would go for the XL with a couple of added options. I would go with a color other than white, add some running boards just because the step up into the cap is so high and probably go with a slightly upgraded interior. And I would pop in a Chrome grill insert. I would like the 7.3 Godzilla motor, but I am not going to pay a bunch more money for it. And I would probably go for a regular cab long box. Because pickup stuff. Too bad you cannot get a regular cab short box in the heavy duty with locking front and rear axles to go with the 4x4. Then you would have an awesome, stout off road pickup with great clearance and maneuverability.

$10,000-$12000 over the price of a gasser plus def plus higher maintenance costs? $10,000 buys A LOT of gasoline (which is often much cheaper than diesel in my area). I think this notion that going diesel if you tow regularly is going to save you money has been a moot point for a while. I think you'd have to be towing a very heavy load all day, every day for ~100,000 miles before you start to see a benefit. Very few people do that. You're buying the diesel because it gives you power, not to save money (and there is nothing wrong with that)

Diesel was cheaper here in Canada in spring and summer. It fluctuates. Now it's 20 cents more per litre than regular gas. Still even if you tow a few days/week at the end the difference in gas money is not much really. DEF is like once a month or more unless you tow heavy daily. Also you're forgetting that the diesel model will hold its value much better than the gas option. Funny how people forget that cause the difference usually is around 10K between used diesel and gas models from what I've seen around me. I own both for my business. One for the heavy/med. towing and gas for maintenance work (barely sees a trailer).

Great review and very informative, but these two trucks remind me why I dislike modern trucks so much. If it's got heat, 4wd, and a tow hitch, that's all I need. I had a fully loaded out tahoe and after a few years only 2 out of the 5 windows opened (the front passenger door and the sunroof)the auto door locks didn't work. had to have the remote start dissabled cause it would start randomly and it was just cheaper to have it disabled than it was to fix it among other things. My moddo is all this gimmicky tech stuff is great, but when it breaks, it's a living nightmare.

You don't have to go Platinum to get LED lights. IMO, the XLT with some options is the sweet spot price/capability wise. Balance fuel savings on diesel with the added cost of diesel versus regular gas. In my area, diesel is an extra $1/gallon, which is 33% more.

It's crazy that Ford is adding the 120v rear seat AC power outlet at a full 20A rating - that basically means you can run 2400watts off it - that's nuts for a vehicle interior power outlet rating!

If that were the choice, it would definitely be a step up from the XL. I could live with it for sure. But i shopped for 7 months, looking for a v8, 6.5' bed, heated seating and stering, with adaptive cruise. Everything i found new was over $68k. Even used in an F250, the price was stupid. I'll settle for what i found, a 2020 F150 Lariat 5.0 with under 13k for $44 OTD. As long as it holds up for the next 5 years, im 😊 happy. I just didn't want the $1100 payment.

I have the white 2023 F150 version of the base F250 and it's awesome! Keyed ignition, basic electronics, small screen and who cares if my dog sits in the front seat? No one. I did change out the tires to Toyo Open Country ATs. It's my work truck and I bought it to abuse it. Way easier to abuse this than the F350 Lariat I had previously. Considered the F250, but the gas mileage is way better with the 3.5EB that can tow nearly as much. Dog loves it, wife is not a fan.

I'm happy to see you guys talking about the GVWR on these trucks as well. Looks like you have an F250 and an F350 with the wrong badges. The whole point of 250/2500 trucks is the 10,000 pound GVWR for registration purposes. I hope you show more of this because it's very misleading to consumers. They will buy the 250/2500 diesel and register it at 10,000 pounds, and think they still have the full (in this case) 2800 pound payload capacity. That is until the DOT weighs them and slaps them with a fine for being over weight (based on registration) even though they're within the manufacturers ratings

$50k is a lot of scratch for some bling and a diesel. The camera differences are big to me as well. I went from an Escalade with several cameras to a Silverado LTZ 1500 with good cameras but mine does not have the overhead view. I miss that. Believe it or not some of us like the less is more. I don't want to be working for my truck first of all. And the helper thing on the tailgate is slow I can do it myself better faster easier. I have work Arms and Legs to go with so no problem. The Platinum is luxury hauler not for work so the tailgate thing is ok I guess. Nice ride for hauling an Airstream if you got that kind of cake. Style wise I always prefer plain jane vehicles for some reason. I don't know why that is.

Andrea the diesel is more efficient as yourself and Nathan proved, but it really isn't cheaper with the cost difference between gas & diesel, not counting the DEF fluid.

@awesomebase
@awesomebase 5 месяцев назад
Personally I don't think efficiency for the diesel should be a talking point... when diesel was priced at or lower than gas it made sense in the discussion; and its been a few years since that was the case. Now, it is almost (nationally) somewhere between 20% to 40% more expensive than gas. So, at best, you may break even on fuel cost which means you have to eat the extra cost of the diesel engine option, DEF, and extra maintenance. A case could be made for power, resale value, longevity, transmission, etc. But efficiency only really matters as it applies to cost and its a wash right now if not worse for the diesel option (with exceptions for lots of towing/hauling). The more frustrating thing is watching review after review trying to justify the enormous cost of even a basic work truck... just a few years ago, that same standard work truck was in the high 30s and you could expect to find deals with significant price reductions on nearly everything but things like the Raptor. It's ridiculous that there are now $100K+ options... the Big 3 are either going to have to get used to the new reality of less production for higher cost trucks, or they'll need to start putting some big discounts and pause pumping up MSRPs on these vehicles. Slowing sales and increasing defaults from buyers with even stellar credit is not a good sign for them.
