As a owner, most technicians dismissed my requests for them to watch your fix for the "squeeky" axle. They reguarded me as a unknowing person and are just full of themselves in how thing work. I started working and repairing Marmon Harrington AWD trucks before their parents were born. Thank you so very much for your content!
The company I work for has both and the 6.2s have been more reliable small sample but still in my experience the gas trucks have way less issues. Of course it's not typical use idling around muddy construction sites all day and night.
@@rockie307yeah i’m not surprised by that one bit. I’m pretty sure everyone buying these trucks know that putzing around and idling is for gassers. If you run a diesel like that, the number one issue is the CCV box. Almost no one knows about it, and if they do they still don’t service it. So as a general statement I don’t agree. Like you said they’re being worked a specific way…
Ford needs to give you a big job leading their tech training, you are awsome and getting even better at explaining and demonstrating repair!! Thanks for all you do, you are making a difference in the industry!!
My wife and I have been hearing this on the passenger side of our 2016 6.7 powerstroke. Thanks to you now I know that this can be fixed!! God bless you!!
I figured that everything had torque specs, even the lug nuts, should get torqued. Perhaps that's what caused the damage to begin with. I have seen ARod break out his torque wrench in other videos. May everyone find some Easter eggs 🥚 !
I took my 2022 F250 in 4 months ago because of this funny metallic noise also coming from the drivers side axle. I told the dealer I thought something was wrong with the hub. The dealer said their "master tech" said the noises were normal and refused to resolve the issue. I told them there was nothing normal about this noise. Thanks for the video. I'm taking this back to the dealer with a video of my truck making the noise and I'm bringing Ford in on this to make sure whatever is wrong gets fixed.
I couldn't 100% figure out source of the same noise on my f550 4x4 6.0 Powerstroke for quite some time. Thanks a lot for filming this video, it helped me out a lot. Cheers!
My 2022 350 started doing this today and i stopped at the dealership where i bought it. The Service writer came out and listened to it. went back in and talked to a tech that told him it was normal, just a rubber seal rubbing on metal. It sounds EXACTLY like this truck, if not louder. They told me to just keep running it, everything is good.
Plow enough snow with these trucks and you can identify exactly what this is within about ten seconds. I sometimes get seals from national that dont have silicone grease in the wiper portion of the seal, if we put them in without checking that they make this noise within one or two plowing sessions. Number two is getting new unit bearings with an ungreased shaft support bearing, that has been happening the last few years so we get stuck doing surgery so we can put a grease needle in that bearing and fill it. I hired a new tech to manage our trucks and machines, these kinds of parts quality issues are so prevalent now its alarming. You will need to be vigilant, that is all it is.
My 2022 has been doing that on the driver’s side. Of course the dealer “can’t replicate” thank you for finding the problem! Now to get them to warranty it…
2019 f250 with 55k miles. Just started this noise a couple weeks ago now. Very annoying squeal! Great video. Thank you for showing part numbers and describing tool sizes. I’m going to attack this repair myself.
Driver side. 21 f350 6.7 had this same issue. Watched over dozens of RU-vid videos to see a possible repair for this model year but this is the first video so far for my model year. Was going to tackle myself but dealership got it fixed under warranty. Paid out of pocket to have them replaced the passenger side while they were at it just in case. Also had them install the front axle knuckles seal shield. Hopefully it’ll help keep crap out of the seals. I’ll have to see. A month after the repair now my 4x4 doesn’t engage unless I lock the hub manually. Go figure.😢 But Arod by far is the most knowledgeable person on these super duties. And I really learn and appreciate all your content. Excellent as always
2022 F550 dump truck, less than 10k miles. Only use 4H in the winter when plowing residential and commercial lots. Noticed the same noise in December brought it to the dealer they stated it was normal. Had a long duration snow storm in January and kept hearing the noise (drove me nuts) captured it on video this time and showed the dealer. They decided to dig a little further this time. Ended up being the same seal. Ford the king of quality the last couple of years. Lol yeah right. I have a love hate relationship with my truck
You should use an arbor press to remove the seal on the shaft. Then use the same arbor press to install the new one. I’m surprised that the dealership doesn’t have any.
Very Informative video. As a new first time F250 6.7 owner, I learn a lot from your videos. I like how you go into detail and what to look for when diagnosing a problem. Thank you for taking time to create them.
Do you remember back in the day when axle seals were simple seals and they didn't squeak and come apart like that because they weren't overly complicated? Yeah. That was nice back then.
Thanks, My 2022 f350 with 16k miles is making the same noise, except its on the passenger side. Ill be making an appointment at the dealership soon to get it fixed
I have been extremely lucky with my trucks (all have been 4x4 except for my 1995 Ranger). I remember the vacuum line leaks causing the nylon/plastic teeth on the F-150's to grind, but my two never did that. My 250 has not had any 4x4 issues to date.
This just came across my feed, since January I've had about 7 f250-f30s come thru my bay for an annoying squeak all have been a late 2021 to early 2022 production. 6 of them have been for that seal on the axle shaft, one was a rock in the rotor. Must've been a bad batch of seals at the time
That axle C clip. First-time hub replacement on my 06 F350without proper pliers, hours to replace it. Snap-on pliers made it seconds to remove and reinstall...tks arod...
man this would help me when I first seal this design back in the early to mid 2004 when there was no special otc seal installers had old ways struggled
I have a beautiful 2017 F350 with 76k on it. The day of purchase I traded one of the most powerful trucks I’ve owned which was a 20-F250. I noticed before I left the lot the 350 has a ticking noise in the hub, we searched for what sounded like a lug nut rattling in the cover and have yet to find the cause. This video makes me question my service shop… I never get proper answers or concerns. For instance, I dropped the 350 off asking them to service and find any issues. It came back with the same issues that I found myself like a hole drilled in the top of the primary coolant tank and the tank empty the infamous hose clamps loose and leaking across the top of the engine… I’m willing to pay the bill I just would like my truck fixed as it should. Thank you for the excellent videos, info, and work sir! Tell me how to book an appointment for a full service 👏🏻
Whenever you have one of these apart be sure to grease the axle bearings. The tapered roller wheel bearings are a sealed unit, but on the inside of the hub is a needle bearing the axle rides on that only turns when in 4 wheel drive.
My 17 250 with 55k had a similar failure, minus the noise. My seal was failing to keep vacuum. It was actually putting the lock out in a bind over time. This would engage the lock out regardless of it is was locked in or not. Wheel bearing was fine.
Had a pile of them doing this lately. Even the installed ones failing a few months later and the same problem. Some no noise but 4x4 inop seal spun like that. I think there was a bad batch of seals. New seals don't seem to last
My 2020 F350 is making this noise with about 30,000kms. I’ve been waiting months for my dealership to get the parts in to repair this, hopefully this is what they ordered!
I just had to use the 4 wheel drive on my new to me 2019 F350 deisel dually. At speeds more than maneuvering around the driveway, i am hearing a faint screech / squeal. Only in 4x4. Gonna be looking into it soon.
They sure haven’t changed those seals much since 1999.. that is a nice tool, always used a 1.5” piece of threaded pipe and pipe flange to set that seal on both the axle and in the housing
THANK YOU 2012 f 450 6.7 i noticed the SAME sound only in the morning when i turned the steering wheel almost full lock to the right, It dont do it no more, seemed to quit on its own BUT if i hear it again ill know. ( I torque EVA-THANG bearing nuts on back side of knuckle, caliper bracket fasteners, lug nuts etc.,) Thanks again
Great video! I have a 2002 Excursion with 2006 axles and the driver's side makes a similar, loud squeal once every turn but only at slow speeds. Started after a shop installed a new lockout hub. I'm hoping it is just a bent dust shield and have not dealt with it in almost a year and a half. The front axle also makes a loud clunking noise and has movement where the driveshaft goes into the pumpkin so that is a higher priority to fix. If the squeal isn't external, now I know what to suspect. Also, I am jealous, I don't think I ever worked on a vehicle this new or clean.
Ford has used those "rotating seal inside a seal" for a long time. I've never heard the squeal, but they seem to leak a lot more often than just a plain wheel seal. I would think a piece of stamped sheet metal would not make a good sealing surface but admittedly I haven disassembled one to see what the inside is like. There is also a limited lubricant available for the seal which I think contributes to their self destruction.
I have a 2022 F450 and believe it started making this noise, or I just noticed it since the window was down. Wasn't as loud as this but same area. I'll need to research this further. Thanks for the tip!
Great diag. I might have suggested the right side to be replaced also. I have a feeling it might be back in soon for the right side. Thanks for showing us this and have yourself A Great Day.
Thanks buddy I really appreciate it. However I can only replace What's broken when it's under warranty I can't just preemptively replace the right side
This video made my day. I have a 2010 F250 with the same noise, but mine just make noise after backing out of my driveway, turning right and starts making the metallic rubbing noise for about 200' then stops. Being in 4WD doesn't really make a difference. I had it in the shop and was sure it was a hub bearing, but the mechanic wasn't sure and didn't make any promises that a new hub was the cure. Sure enough I dropped $1000 on the job but it didn't fix the problem. Now I'm thinking he knew but didn't have the seal installer tool. My speedometer and odometer stopped working a few months ago, just before the squeaking started, and now I wonder if it could have been related to the speed sensor and this bad seal? What do you think? Thanks again for this video.
My truck started doing this over the winter so thanks for the fix. A question about another issue, the 4x4 won’t engage in cold weather ( minus 20 or colder) I am told this is not unusual in cold weather, help!
When setting the seal stub shaft, I just use a press and some old bearing races and use the hub to set the seal in the knuckle. Don’t have fancy tools 🥹
My dealer can’t even fix my cruise control on 30,000 klms f350. They will surely be stumped and claim no warranty for this as they do with everything else. I hate dealerships after you own your ride.
Mine has never had this problem. Oh, that,s right, I don't have a vacuum seal for my vacuum controlled hub on my 2003 Dodge 4x4, I added manual lockouts from Yukon and they work great all the time. What a messed up system Ford put into their hubs. These things don't work whenever you need them, and you don't find out until you need them you need to go out and manually lock them anyway!
ED, had to grind tips of my cclip pliers to work! why not pull pull/push axle into assembly with 4 rear nuts as i did?? didnt buy special driver tool, you hit hard with 2lb hammer! the cheaper seal wont take much hammering! the snap ring was frustating with my harbor freight pliers! u do have nice clear videos.
I have a 2022 F-350 Platinum 6.7 with just 15,000 miles on it. I’m 1,800 miles from home on vacation in Yellowstone, and it’s making this noise in both 2 and 4 wheel drive.
It doesn’t make sense that the seal would fail like that. What is the cause? The seal shouldn’t support anything, after all it’s not a bearing right? As I see it, either the u-joint bearings are not keeping the shaft positioned or there is play in the splines going into the hub. A weird one for sure!
Every super duty I've owned the past 15 years has had this problem. To add insult to injury what they don't tell you is when you live in the northeast this is basically a service part that has to be taken apart and replaced or cleaned or checked every year with the salt and rust and corrosion and yet still the 4wd system fails and needs manual locking
i could hear mine when i was out plowing in residentials neighborhoods. seemed like it went away at higher speeds but 5mph it was most prominent. it went away about mid season
Thanks for the video. I just replaced my upper and lower ball joints on both sides in my 2010, so I obviously had to do ALL of that and more while replacing them. I wish I would have seen your video first 😅. Quick question, when I re-installed the shaft, it went in easily, but I didn't get the other wheel to turn, did I do something wrong? I haven't had any issues while driving it. Also I put it on 4x4 but I don't know how to actually test it without putting it up in the air 😂. Thanks in advance.
I had this same noise, except the passenger side and not nearly as loud, on my 2022 F250 Tremor. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed it as a bad hub bearing. They replaced the hub assembly under warranty, problem solved.
I have another suggestion for people who use this trucks for snow and ice service. SILICONE SPRAY the area around that seal after brake clean and wipe as often as you care to do it. That will help prevent brine and snow from getting into that area, sticking to things and melting into that seal. Doubles the life for our stuff, otherwise we used to do u joints, seals and hub lockouts every two years.
