Hey, good news re: Dragon Shield packaging: "We are aware of the confusion the packaging has caused ... For the second series, ... , we have indicated the sleeve type on the side of the box. +1, shuffles much better than ds mattes
@SC2Anski
@SC2Anski 6 лет назад
I think they are the best sleeves for the first couple of weeks. But after that I think their shuffle feel suffers greatly. I've been very happy with new KMC sleeves though I use them in my EDH deck and don't play it as often as my modern deck which is sleeved in the Eclipse sleeves. But overall I think Eclipse sleeves are great.

Wash your hands is an absolute gem of advice. Though I will say, sleeves prone to dirtying easily, will still get dirty after a few weeks of game play, no matter how often or much you wash your hands.
@OrdMandrell1

Thanks for the review Brian. I had the same level of frustration with the mis-labeling (or downright non-labeling) of the Dragon Shield Art sleeves. I bought the red dragon and blue dragon ones because I preferred the art but discovered, to my horror, that they were glossy. Fortunately, they were great. But I still don't like the fact that they don't state that they're glossy on the box.

Wasnt that on Professor? I remember someone from DS saying that only the green one is matte
@OrdMandrell1
@OrdMandrell1 6 лет назад
Yeah. Only the green one. But they don't mention it on the packaging. So I bought the other ones thinking they were matte too :(
@fieldsofgravy
@fieldsofgravy 6 лет назад
DS gave the prof matte versions of 3 different arts, which were in the review. A few weeks before release, they announced that only the green one would be matte. Not necessarily on the professor as his were all matte. I bought the black one based solely on the profs recommendation, was sorely disappointed, but they're still good sleeves. I would just prefer matte.
@OrdMandrell1
@OrdMandrell1 6 лет назад
I'll be damned. Really? That's a pretty fascinating insight. Thanks for sharing.
@draheim90
@draheim90 6 лет назад
The company behind Dragon Shield (Arcane Tinmen) sent Prof all matte sleeves for his first review of DS art sleeves, and then later announced it was a mistake and that they had decided to run only the Gaial in matte. Not the Prof's fault, but he also didn't revise his video and so I bet a lot of people bought the sleeves not knowing this. I pre-ordered Draxis sleeves right after I saw Prof's initial video believing them to be matte. When I received them, and they were indeed glossy and not matte, I tried them out for a tournament and didn't like them much (I bought a ton of Gaials and they are indeed great). I submitted a refund request to Arcane Tinmen last week for the Draxis purchase and they refunded my payment in full within a day!

Ha. The bathrooms in my LGS have really loud sinks, so it's obvious who did an didn't wash their hands. Between matches one opponent went to the bathroom, didn't wash, then asked to borrow some dice. I was forced to decline unless he went back and washed his hands. He did. The end.

Personally as old player my choice go to Eclipse ultra pro. Good shuffle, great protection, they look sober and serious but more importantly the matte front is actually a pro when you are interested in good old style look of old cards (i hate foils and glossiness).

I personally only use Eclipse Sleeves. They feel great and hold up to shuffling a commander deck. Slimefoot rocks the Forest Green you use in this video. Sharuum uses the Royal Purple. And I use the vibrant Hot Pink for Standard and draft. I can't recommend them enough and it makes me happy that you validate them with your approval!

After your original Eclipse review, I went and bought a huge lot of 1000 (10x100). Then I came to this video and my heart sunk, I thought for sure you were going to say that the new 100 packs were back to the old UP trash, and I totally blew my $75. What a relief that they are in fact even better!

Love your sleeving videos. For the longest time, I played casually and never thought of sleeving. When I finally did try it, the sleeves I randomly bought turned out to be low quality, and that really turned me off of sleeving. But then I found your videos, and now I am able to buy sleeves that meet my needs, without having to try dozens of brands. Currently need to buy myself another batch of sleeves, and the first thing I did was check out your videos.

"Washing your hands" best advice. I just got a couple packs of the Dragon Shield Art sleeves and I think they're great! Smooth, shuffle well, and don't slide off each other when the deck is sitting on the table as I'm drawing cards. 100% recommend. Also the art illustrations look fantastic too.

Thank you for your reviews. I very much appreciate your time discussing the differences in dragon shield types. I grabed the glossy art by mistake, but they are great none the less. If there is a change in boxes to indicate what's in the box that would very useful. I like useing the dragon shield for commander and the eclipse for regular +sideboard.

The fact that they didn't label the art sleeve boxes so that it's easy to indicate which are glossy and matte is frustrating. I fortunately knew that the Gaial sleeves were the only ones with the matte style, but what about a customer that doesn't know that there is a difference with one of the art sleeves compared to the others and ends up buying something they didn't ask for... I don't know why they didn't think about this when designing the box. Besides from that, the dragon shield art sleeves are by far my favourite. They really need to make more art sleeves in the matte style so that there is atleast more choices for people like myself that prefer the matte art sleeves over the glossy.
@xZuunes
@xZuunes 6 лет назад
Yeah I bought the Gaial for my edh deck and was so pleased with it. I later bought Nidrogg and noticed they were glossy and I was so HAPPY, cause I prefer glossy over mat. I dont get why it doesnt say anywhere if they matte or glossy.

Very informative as always. I'm personally a fan of the Eclipse ones, the dirt/foggyness thing was never an issue for me particularly because my OCD won't allow it, I always wash my hands before playing, never play without my playmat, etc. But I just bought the art DS one because I simply fell in love with that particular illustration. Wouldn't have if I hadn't seen it here.

Always used dragon shield for edh because those matte sleeves are just brilliant. I do have one in eclipse sleeves and it can subjected to the problems you said prof.. My modern deck is in eclipse sleeves and I only changed them once due to the way a shuffle gets the tips of the card sleeves to show creases after a while. Which is usually after about 6-8 months of play

I think another test you should add to your already very detailed reviews are to see if the cards slide off when putting the deck down to play. Especially when playing Commander with those tall 100 card decks since whenever someone shakes the table or I draw too quickly, the top half of the deck slides right off. Just a thought. Thanks for your great reviews! I’ll be buying a pack of eclipses for my next deck thanks to you.

Professor, a new test that you should make for your next sleeves review is a scratch test (not on a table or rough surface but actually your own nails which is quite natural to happen during normal play). I bought the new UltraPro Eclipse and they are great but I got some noticeable scratches on the back of some of them which lead me to have to replace them for tournament play, not really for casual play. All your videos are awesome by the way, keep at it and greetings from Argentina :-)

Really digging Eclipses, though I wish I had known the 80ct ones were made of lesser stuff before buying. Still, nice colors, and I REALLY like how the insides remain black regardless of the color you get, looks better than my now second choice, dragon sleeves, which like most other sleeves just have the same colored front as the color that they are. Learned something this video!

The Eclipse have seriously grown on me. I always have clean hands when playing, but I may be a bit rough with shuffling. Considering the Eclipse are not prone to tearing, they are absolutely perfect for me. I do like the Dragons. Super thick and all. But I do not care for the shuffling. So, thank you Professor. I would have never touched the Eclipse had I not known about their quality. Thanks to you.

You should include a sleeve corner bending test since that's actually one of the most common issues I have with sleeves no matter how gentle I am when slide-shuffling my cards.
@sjdhrjrjejdhdhsh
@sjdhrjrjejdhdhsh 6 лет назад
I own the 80ct Eclipse sleeves and I think there's something worth noting with them. If you somehow were to flip a card it will become a different color to the rest of the cards making them marked cards. I've been able to shuffle the flipped card to any desired position in my own test and it's hardly noticeable from outside of a few feet. It's worth checking this problem with the 100ct sleeves as well.

Loving the back-to-back review videos! The Dragon Shield Gaial sleeves are the only sleeves for me since they have the Dragon Shield quality, in matte, and the art helps orient cards when playing unlike solid backs. Just wish they had more art sleeves in matte, like seemingly everyone else. I have not tried the new Eclipses, but the old ones had some problems and I wasn't a fan of the thinness and shuffle feel.

The Matte Gaial art are the nicest quality sleeves I have ever used. I consistently get compliments on them, the art is much more impressive in person and the general feel is satisfying. I too wish they would create all these art sleeves in matte, as I would buy them all.

I wasn't aware of the KMC issue, but I had noticed that they were getting cheaper to purchase in bulk. Some orders felt a little less KMC-ish, but I chalked it up to me being super picky. Turns out I was right, heh.

Just bought some Dragonshield🐉 sleeves for my 93/94 mtg decks and sets. Awesome quality, good feeling while shuffeling and the prize is so good comparing to a lot of other sleeve brands. Gooo Dragonshield!!!✊🙂

Eclipse won my trust, haven’t had a problem with dirt but the sleeves are prone to finger prints from the natural oils my hands produce. Still worth it, the shuffle is orgasmic 👌👌

Massive props to ultra-pro for putting a warning on the pack as to best usage patterns. I love that they are coming right out and saying there are potential gotchas.

I think the best sleeves on the market are the Dragon Shield Matte: Jet. The two main reasons for this are: 1.The general durability of the sleeves; 2. Because of the weightiness and rough front-face of the sleeves there is no need to worry about your newly sleeved commander deck bursting everywhere or falling over.

I use the Dragon Shield Draxsis Art sleeves and I recomend all art sleeves even over reguilar Dragon Shield sleeves. With the Draxsis Art sleeves, which I allways use because I like their art the most, I haven't found the problem of them not beeing not fully opaque. Mine are fully opaque.

I was surprised that you didn't find scratching/gouging on the fronts of the glossy Dragon Shield Art sleeves to be a problem. I have two sets of the glossy art sleeve sets and I've gotten has scratched very easily and deep across the fronts. It was so bad I was actually kind of upset because the artwork on the back and shuffle feel remained perfect.

The stretch test depends on the position and torque of your fingers. For an equal amount of arm force, a sleeve splits much more easily if the force is concentrated near the weak point at the opening rather than concentrated near the bottom (for example, by curling your fingers while torquing as though you were opening a book face down). If, hypothetically, there truly weren't any differences between production runs, subtle (potentially unconscious rather than intentional) differences in technique could explain the apparent inconsistency in quality assurance. EDIT: I've now practiced on enough Dragon Shields that I can choose whether or not they fail in less than 1 second or pass with flying colors by subtly altering my technique in a way that would not be obvious on video.

I've been pretty constantly using Dragon Shields since I started playing around Dragon's Maze. Back then Ultra Pro had the only matte sleeves I could easily find but had a garbage quality and most glossy sleeves just had a horrible shuffle feel. Dragon Shield's old glossy sleeves had imo the best feel of the sleeves I could find back then. And once they came out with matte sleeves I couldn't be happier. I did get one pack of Eclipse sleeves as a gift from a friend when they were new and impossible to find but as a commander player they basically got regaled to draft and prerelease use only. When I used them I did fall in love with them and now that they're in packs of 100 they might be my new go to especially for lighter colored sleeves. I'm not going to go out and immediately resleeve all my decks with them but I would like a white set for my mono black zombie edh deck when I can find them.

Mighty JL They've been misspelling "matte" since forever. They're Japanese; that's par for the course.
