How about instead of initiative trackers that just look like popsicle sticks, you cnc basic player outlines (thief, fighter paladin, wizard) using waste wood, to the same thickness and the players can color them in and give them to the dm to use? God, I want to work at Wyrmwood!

I would love a small magnetic dice organizer and I think others would too. It doesn’t even need to hold many dice, I’d be happy with one of each but bonus points if it has room for two of each. As a DM I have a lot going on behind the screen, if I could simplify that partially by having my dice easily accessible by type mounted to my screen it would save me time and which translates to a better game for my players.

The tablet holder sounds amazing! I personally use a phone to control music, one to always have my player's stats up on D&D Beyond, and a tablet to run everything else. If the little wooden holders could optionally be put closer together to hold phones as well it would be amazing. I'd love to see some little dice-holding shelves you could attach to the magnet strips at the top, or a mini magnetic dice tower for the inside, if you're planning on adding more optional accessories. All in all, this looks like an incredible product. Can't wait to get my hands on one!

Few initial ideas: 1) Rail hook to connect to MGT rail 2) not sure what dimensions of screens are but if they are able to fit in a kallax for display purposes that would be amazing. 3) miniature holders (2” and 4” base sizes) 4) pen/pencil & dry erase marker shelf 5) rotating panels (I realize this is your old idea from first Kickstarter but would love to see this offered) 6) dice storage shelf for all those extra dice we love to have lying around (sized shelf to hold one of your original vaults)

Condition rings: fail (they go on the mini) Die Tower: Just add magnets to the existing tower product. The GM screen then clips either side "as is". Tablet holder: simplest option - two magnetised holders that fold flat in the accessory pocket of the carrier.

for the tablet holder, why not just have 2 hangers that hook into the top slot and kick out a bit on the bottom? moves with the screen, they are independent so you can then slide them left and right for wider or thinner formats, and they would pack up nicely. Not an expert in material sciences so I am not sure how much pressure would be at the bottom of the hangers in comparison to the material

In a similar style to the iPad holder, I think it would be amazing if you created something similar that could hold up an open book. One of my biggest crutches as a dm is having to read a stat block or something out of a book while also managing everything else behind my screen because the book just takes up so much space. I know there are alternatives to using a book but I like having it physically in front of me so it may just be a me problem

5 min in.. please don't worry about condition trackers on the initiative trackers. Imo it's trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. IF anything, have something like "held action". Edit: For the slot trough, how possible would it be to have it integrated in with the panel, so the GM could just pop it out? Then when to store it, they just fold it back in and it's flush with the panel?
@CalebS92
@CalebS92 2 года назад
For me the coolest accessory for the old screen was also the most functional and hardest to manufacture, but it was the chest of holding. It was a convenient and neat and tidy way of having storage for DM's. As a DM my biggest problem is that it can get real messy behind the screen with all the tools that I need, from mini's to dice, to condition rings, to notes, books, etc. The chest of holding was a way to keep the area a bit neater and help it running smoothly. The two way dice tower is cool but at least for me and all the other DM's I've played under we don't use public facing rolls so the big tower would get no use, see my other comment about my opinions on a tablet holder for DnD Beyond. I feel like if you are going to be playing in person and paying for a wooden GM screen you're more of a pen and paper no-little technology being used, More analog less digital. Also for the initiative tracker I say go back to what you did for the old one, the brass and silver colored metal cards were beautiful, useful, easy to produce. You don't want to over-design and over-complicate something that can be simple, elegant, and work just as well.

Idea for the status tracker: The version where you held the status rings looks exactly like a jigsaw piece. So just make the status as jigsaw pieces that would "infinitely" stack on top of the character tracker.
@sethhagen9240

As a DM and player, I'd never use condition trackers/rings on the Initiative Tracking. You want them around your miniatures so you're actively seeing them on the map and thinking about how it effects your tactics. Putting them on the initiative would likely lead to forgetting they were there or having to do both. The only possible situation I see that being useful is for Theater of the Mind stuff when there's no miniatures or map.

Now we are getting really good with the screen. Pass on condition tracker, those are easy on minis and players help a lot with those. 💯 on the private/public dice tower. That's a definite purchase for me. I'd love if it was the same height as the DM screen with the hinge magnets on each side. It can help hold up the panels and saves a ton of footprint behind the screen that way. And the Tablet Trough is a Must Buy as well for the exact same reason shared in the video by the poor fella kicked out of the meeting.

For status trackers, make them stack above the initiative tracker. The top of the initiative tracker as well as each status would narrow in at the top (for a visual, look up a capital A in the Westminster font). This would let each one fit onto the one below it. The tolerances would need to be loose enough that one in the middle or on the bottom of a stack could be removed easily, but still tight enough that a stack of 5+ wouldn't be wobbly. For another visual, imagine a stack of 9 oz Solo cups (statuses) on top of a single 18 oz Solo cup (initiative) - only mostly all flattened out instead of round. Also: the tablet holder is an easel. It's a Tablet Easel, and you could actually make it work similar to a fold up picture easel, but instead of a single center hinge, a hinge on each side so you can adjust it for a wider or narrower tablet or whatever you want to hold up.

Maybe I’m being overly protective of my tech here, but given how insanely powerful we know the magnets holding this screen together to be, is it a good idea to build an accessory encouraging folk to push one up against the other?
@mrsirtoyou1974
@mrsirtoyou1974 2 года назад
A valid, if somewhat outdated concern. The danger Magnets present to modern tech is that they can damage the data contained in HDD storage (mechanical, magnetic hard drives). Most tablets and smartphones use Universal Flash Storage (like the tech used in a USB drive), which is not susceptible to damage from magnetic fields, and most new laptops use SSD storage (also flash storage). So unless you're planning on sticking an old laptop with an HDD or an old CRT TV on the screen, there's no real danger. In fact, there are a number of smartphone and tablet accessories that use magnets for a variety of purposes. Tablet and smartphone covers that stay closed with a magnet have existed nearly as long as those electronics themselves have.
@kgoblin5084
@kgoblin5084 2 года назад
Magnets only affect technology that also depends on magnets... which nowadays is way less than it used to be. For example, you wouldn't want to put a CRT monitor, cassette tape, or classic-style hard-drive next to 1 of these GM screens. But literally no tablet or mobile phone has ever had any of those :p. Solid state drives, flash memory, & LCD displays will not really be affected at all. Apparently there is an issue with internal compasses, which might bork up location sensitive apps, & WW probably should include a general disclaimer re: putting the screen in front of your laptop... but this isn't the 1990s anymore and generally speaking no longer a concern

Love the tablet holder idea. Y'all ever play Scrabble? I think the shape you're looking for is quite similar to a Scrabble tile holder: just a long, low wooden bar with a lip. Leave off the edges that keep letter tiles on, kick it out a bit more at the bottom (too steep an angle makes a tablet hard to read and interact with), run it the full width of the GM screen panel, attach to the panel with magnets, and voilà.

I would go with a wooden initiative tracker that’s an inch wide and and inch tall. As thick as the screen or a little thinner. Ideally, it’d just be a little block of wood with magnets on the top and bottom. Then make condition trackers that are little blocks of wood half inch tall or whatever is readable and have them click on top the initiative tracker with magnets. Making them different colors would be great. The easiest way to do that is either to make them colored acrylic or glue a thin piece of acrylic to a little block of wood. They’re always talking about the wood waste. This would be another idea to use some of the scraps up. Also I love that Jason is looking back at that original Kickstarter. That’s still the setup I’d love to have (minus maybe the flipping screen in the middle). I wouldn’t reinvent the dice tower. You sell a dice tower. Modify it to allow GM screen sections to snap on either side.

Going to agree with a lot of other comments, condition rings go on the mini. Or players track them or something like that, don't need the visual clutter up top. While the 2 way dice tower is cool. I'd never use it. 99% of my rolls are private. For the maybe 1 roll a session that I do public, I can just roll on the table or communal dice tray. For a tablet holder, I feel like most tablets already come with covers or kickstands that put them at a good angle, I don't see the need for an additional solution. Also agree with others, a storage solution like you had in the original would be very handy. I'd argue it could just as easily be a stand-alone product, doesn't need tower integration. Something with a number of compartments for my spare dice (for large spell damage), storing condition trackers, a few minis, things like that.

I basically have a folding table to myself so I have the room for my iPad but having it on my DM screen would be amazing. Make it a little ledge and you can use it for writing utensils too, for the top OR bottom edge of your DM screen!!! I would ditch the keyboard case while DMing if I could have a cheeky little ledge on my DM screen for my iPad or even for my phone, which I ALSO use during D&D! Regarding the tablet holder: Some people don't have tablets but have laptops. What if, instead of resting the tablet screen on a holder in front of the panel, you make it so that the screen could be its own panel? You could make side rails that slide over the left and right side of a tablet or laptop screen, and then those rails magnetically attach to the other panels of the GM screen. That way, regardless of whether or not it's a tablet or laptop screen, it slots easily into the GM screen.

When Doug started drawing his condition ring hanger initiative tracker I thought he was drawing a puzzle piece. What if you had a pretty simple and small character initiative tracker, and then a condition status puzzle piece could slot into it. Could have separate pieces for different conditions or generic magnet pieces that use those little magnet bars.

the Tablet legs could just pop out of the DM screen; like a partial cut out or mechanic sort of ledge so there are no separate pieces that you could lose. If you had to separate pieces, they could be stored in the screen, just incase the DM isn't using a tablet but a separate notebook, etc.

Tablet Holder idea is top, but maybe rotating panel + tablet holder to show maps or info to players

I'd like to vote a big plus one for both the condition tracker on the screen as well as the laptop or tablet integration. I find organization of condition trackers on minis particularly difficult, especially for theater of the mind, battles, and any kind of integration to make Dndbeyond at the table feel more like "old school D&D" would be amazing.

The tablet holder seems like a really good idea however the weight of the tablet(and the fact that you manipulate the tablet by pushing against it and the screen) may create some stability issues. It might be a good idea to create feet that exist on the outside of the gm screen (facing the players) that clip onto the bottom of the gm screen panels. These feet would also be attached to the "stand" on the inside of the gm screen as one solid piece. That way you could slot the feet/stand onto any of the panels initially, then attach your other panels once it is situated.

I don’t have an opinion on HOW you do the tablet holder, but will absolutely be buying whatever you guys come up with there. I run my games from my iPad, so that’s a big selling point for me.

Initiative trackers could use color coded stat tracker slides like the ones in Mansions of Madness for tracking player character stats for DnD status effects. Less messy than the rings and you could fit more on the sides of smaller trackers etc.

For a condition tracker. There could be a solution that could work. Using an L or U shaped metal bracket. That hooks over top of the screen and drapes down. Lazer cut wooden plates with magnetic backs can then be attached to the bracket.

If you really need condition markers on your initiative tracker, take an idea from Lego. put a depression on top of your initiative piece and make piece that slots into it that are the same dimensions as the tracker, but painted to match the condition rings. Put a depression on top of your status markers and you can stack as many as you need, a rainbow of conditions even, on each initiative tracker.

Tracker: You can make the top of the initiative tracker like a puzzle piece (Tab A). Then each condition tracker can have (Slot B) on its bottom to attach to Tab A. Then just confirm the top of the condition tracker to Tab A again, and you can stack as many conditions as needed. Or they can just be relatively short and flat with + - magnets instead of puzzle pieces. But instead of trying to fit the conditions in a window, stack them on top. Then you could also have a little organizer/holder for them to stick to the inside DM screen. Just a thought.

Condition rings make me think of ring toss games. Which make me think of a pole design to place rings on. Which makes me think of a pole designed to look like a wizard tower to put condition rings on.

I personally favor a flagpole style initiative tracker. I think being able to slot a add on pole/segment into the top or at the edge of one of the panels that goes above the screen would be great. Have magnetized name plates that snap on to that sucker. It's very visible and easy to switch around. Admittedly it would be more bulky than thin cards but I love the one I have.

If figures are used trackers only need to indicate if ANY status is in affect, because If status rings are also being used they are already on the figs. Therefore it's just a a reminder and you only need a simple singular indicator.

4:29 The top hat idea isn't bad all you would have to do is make the short bit where you put the rings on longer to stack more and if possible rotate the lettering to face outwards instead of up then instead of round you could make it the same as the top hat so rectangular but bigger to fit on better so the players and the GM would see it on both sides, Plus instead of a name what about just colours and each player is an assigned colour for it?
@oriondourden

Agreed. I thought if it looked like a 10-gallon hat, where the top is long, would fit as many status rings as one would reasonably have, which frees up minis to move unencumbered.

So idea for the tablet. I believe iPad, Samsung, and surface laptops have magnets on the inside. You should be able to use those magnets to attach it to the panel of the GM screen using the magnets already in. OR if you cut out a section and do a hinge mechanism on the bottom of the gm screen it could work.

The condition trackers were made to be put on the minis, I think it should stay that way. Anyone would love a basic but awesome initiative tracker though. As for the tablet holder, it's almost a necessity for a lot of us and I would love to have that option available. I was recently thinking of buying an arm that would attach to the table to hold the tablet but if you can make it more convenient attaching it to the screen, I'm all ears. Overall the screen is starting to look real good!

While I agree that condition trackers are generally better on the minis or on a whiteboard for theater of the mind style games, I could see a benefit to having a feature on the initiative trackers specifically for when there is something that must be done at the start of a turn before any other actions take place. To my recollection of 5e's rules, this circumstance can be lumped into two categories: death saves and a handful of spell effects that specify the saving throw to end the effect is at the start of the target's turn instead of the end. Death saves likely don't need a reminder on the tracker because it is literally the only thing a downed player can do with their turn unless they happen to roll a 20 and are brought back at 1 hp. As for spell effects, a discreet hole for a peg of some kind should serve as enough of a reminder. At most 3 holes for pegs, because frankly I'd be hard pressed to imagine a circumstance where more are necessary unless the players or DM purposefully orchestrate it.

That tower from the og screen kickstarter that has public/private option for rolling would make the difference for me if I were to back or not. I would just buy the tower, because I already have DM screens that work fine but do not have a tower like that, and no one does outside of custom work or 3d printed. I think it has more features than your current dice towers.
@jonevansauthor

Since tablets come in different sizes, I would think that a magnetic rest at either end, joined by a long ledge would be best since it would cater for everything. Some people might even buy 3 screens, and 3 rests. But you could also use similar clamps/rests/attachments to hang or support other things. A card with your current game's rules on it. A card with your map on it etc etc. That's assuming the entire screen isn't magnetic. Or... a thin sheet of magnetic whiteboard material, to turn the back of that screen into a whiteboard, from which you can hang more magnets for notes/rules etc.

I greatly appreciate Jason reading comments and his attempt to have a dice tower. Not to ask a stupid question - but why not just have the tower you had had for the original screen? Is it a cost issue? I very much want a tower that rolls on both sides - but the plastic helix does not look like a Wyrmwood product at all IMO.

If you put the name on the bottom and made them stack upward, there is no limit to the amount of conditions because you can just keep putting them on top of each other.

Please keep thinking with the initiative tracker. Being able to elegantly track conditions would be really nice. I liked the little magnets thing, but maybe make it a bit larger, and bright colors obviously. Or have two rails so you can overlap stuff. Like having a piece for the character, and one that hovers behind and over the top which can list conditions. I know you like keeping things simple but not everyone at the consumer end likes simple, and I think a lot of those people might be DMs ;) At a bare minimum at least give me a larger tracker I can write on and put behind so I can use my own condition color coding using dry-erase markers. Having rings would be convenient for matching, but you could just as easily have your tracker magnets color match with a set of third party rings you sell anyway. If you have to do the rings thing I'd actually prefer a single hook at the top to pile them on, even if it's less cool looking. You could try to source rings with the writing facing outwards too, so that it's readable from the edge-side. The way I see it there are a lot of cool ways to do this.
