Thank you for the comparisons. I just put up the original ones a month or so ago. Love them. Then ran across your video that there are newer ones! I just wanted to tear mine down and get these Pros. But, after seeing your comparisons, I didn't see any wow factor that I expected. Thank you for sharing!
I just ordered the originals from Amazon, but will be returning them and getting the Pros. Thank you for the video. The only reason I’m changing them is for the warm white option that I can’t get with the originals. Also. The 200ft length works better for my installation.
Go figure, just got done putting up 400' of the original lights on my house, and another 400' on my parents' house... however, I think I like the originals compared to the added price tag. I don't like the splicing option, looks pretty bulky and would need to definitely be mounted with hardware, then also try to find somewhere to tuck them away on each splice to not be an eyesore. Here's my vote from them to also release a brown version of the lights, to give all the common soffit/eaves colors an easy option! Would be nice to see the max brightness differential. I know its hard to capture with a camera, but that's the biggest selling point of the Pros, and we can't really see how that looks on your house in this video. What do all those extra lumens actually do compared to the originals?
My trim is white so the black wouldn’t have worked for me. I didn’t want to stick them up so I used a piece of J-channel for the outside comparison. I show a brief clip in the end screen. As for brightness, I didn’t see any difference with RGB. I think their claim of 30 lumens per light is only in white mode.
Same here. Just finished putting up 300+ feet but the pro has less lights and costs $100 more. I’m ok with what I got. They look better closer together anyways. Plus I got them for colors not white.
@RushPL1 I’m exploring options for an upcoming video. I like the use of J-channel because (1) it’s cheap, (2) it hides the wires, and (3) it could be used as a temporary, removable channel if you can’t have (or don’t want) permanent lights.
Thanks for the video. Considering I plan to use white light 90% of the time. The pro is worth the upgrade for me. However for many people I don’t;t think it is worth the upgrade.
I think the original ones are better. The lights are closer together and have the lights blurr together for a solid look. The PRO ones look too spaced out and are choppy. I would rarely light up my house white for day-to-day operation. Mostly used for holidays like Halloween or Christmas! Maybe the prices will do on the originally when the pro goes on sale!
The Pro and standard editions use the same app so they support the same scenes. You can only get a sense of the scenes when the whole house is done so look for installation videos; they usually show demos.
Just decided to look these lights up again and noticed there's a "pro" version out now. I don't need black because my soffits are white, the brightness seems to be too similar to tell, plus I live on a street with zero lights and my house would be plenty bright already. I prefer the closer together setup with more lights per string. I'm not afraid of splicing to make it fit in the areas I need them to fit. I do think having the adjustable white temps would be nice but I don't think that single feature alone is worth it to me to buy the Pro over the standard lights since I'll likely leave the white alone anyways. Thank you for the video and the comparison breakdown.
I was debating on taking back the original set and getting the pros but after watching this the originals will be going up. Govee should come out with colored wire covers to match your house.
I have black sofits, so the pro version is my choice. I don't love that wires just hang there. It would be nice for some sort of wire management solution to hide them, like cable channels or similar to like the plastic channels for behind a tv. Not sure what the best solution would be.
Ordered a 200ft kit of these after watching your video! I am curious how many splicing adapters come with the kit? Sorry if you said this in your video.
Figures... I just put up the original version last week (bought them a couple of months ago) and I didn't even see a pro version on their website, or I would have got those instead. Having said that, I still quite happy with my purchase, I spliced my own where required anyways without issue. The only two things that bug me is they're all white. Not a great look on a house with all deep brown trim and soffits. The second is the programming, I'm sure some kid would have no issue but in my 60s and I find it user unfriendly and frustrating. I'm sure they could be made simpler to self program in somehow. Overall, they do look great on the house, and I'm happy with the result. Thanks for the video.
I’m not a fan of the app either, but it’s functional if you take the time to learn it. The built-in scenes are limited and they can’t be tweaked. So focus on learning the DIY capabilities.
Great video. Question: can you set an individual bulb to a specific color? Wanting to know if I can set my own color scheme such as red, green, red, green or maybe white white, red red, green green, etc? I can't figure out from watching and researching if it's only four bulbs at a time must be the SAME color or can I change an individual bulb???
Excellent video! I have a few questions. I live in a 3 level split house. Will the PRO version of the lights work for the following measurements?? 1) I need 16feet of lights on my Garage 2) I then have a 18ft Gap to the next set of lights on my first upper peak ( 16feet of lights needed here) 3)I then have a 18ft Gap to the next set of lights on the highest peak ( 60feet of lights needed here) So I will need 92 feet of lights. So the 100ft in the PRO set should work? In order to use the lights as intended and have then in one line.... - How will I bridge the first gap of 18 feet and then the second gap of 18 feet? - Will the One Extensions + 2 Shorter Extensions reach? How long is the longer extension and the two smaller extensions? Or will I need to splice in my own wire? If so, what wire do you recommend, what gauge and where do you recommend getting it? - Will the splicers that come in the kit be enough to do two gaps? - I want to keep the Controller and Power supply on the lower garage so I have easy access to it. Thanks for your help.
If you cut the lights from one string and add them to another, how does this impact the lighting pattern programs? I greatly appreciate your video. I wanted the effects on changing colored lights for different holidays. So I definitely do not need the added white light feature of the pro version. I am going to see if I can put these in translucent plastic eggshells to see if they will mimic bulbs. Perhaps I will make a video to see how well it turns out. I will stick with the less expensive version. I think the pro version uses the white LEDs to indicate the 50lm output, as I did not see any appreciable difference between the two sets with the colors demonstrated in your video, other than the more full coverage with the earlier model. If you splice or clip the string, do you void the warranty or the extended warranties? I would like to know so I don’t get the added protection that would not apply to me if I cannot replace them if they fail.
The PROs are designed to be cut. So they won’t void the warranty. Cutting the others isn’t supported so you’re on your own if a cut string fails during the warranty period. Scenes will work the same whether they are cut or not.
Great videos. Do you know if we can invert the extremity where we plug the power and control ? Because my leds are already in place. But will be a lot more estetic if I change the power from one extremity to the other. Tks
I had never heard of those lights before. Thanks I'm going to consider putting them on my house after I have it painted. The difference between the 2 sets that I could see other than difference in the whites is where the puddle of light stops. The original has a wider light puddle than the pro. I sort of wish they made the original in the pro's trim. I prefer the light from the original but the convenience of the pro's whirring and the wider puddle of light.
Do you know if you can make a three way split with the pro lights? I have an outlet under my eve in the middle of my house. Ideally I would put in a splitter at the outlet and have one strand going left and one going right. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I would only do that if I had the exact same length strings in both directions and I intentionally wanted them to be mirrored. It would be best to find a power source near one end and use them as intended.
I made a new video to show you can split the strings but it might not produce the results you expect: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zhqqC9orh0s.html
@handydadtv I have exposed beams/trusses as shown at 5:58 in your video. If that is your home or if you happen to know, what type of brackets are used there to keep the LED portion of the cable at a relatively consistent distance away from the building material? Great video BTW!
I will be using the splice kits on the Pro version and then using the extension wire to the next eave. Do I need to use the cut off lights after the extension or can I just plug the next string of lights in?
What did you use for when the lights did not line up with a stud? What did you use to stand the lights off from the plywood board to match the ones on the studs?
Those are just photos I found. Not my installation. Post pictures of your setup on Reddit /r/Govee and ask for advice. Tons of knowledgeable people there.
You can terminate a string with half of the splicing kit, but it's also fine to cut the wire, separate them, and enclose the ends with a little hot glue.
Hello since you have both of them, could you please check and confirm if I can use the extension cable from old generation into the Pro version, also did you test for backward compatibility ?
@handydadtv thank you for this it really helped. Could you please tell me what brackets are used @5:58? I have a similar roof style and trying to figure out a solution.
Now that I just purchased the original ones that come in white and then painted them brown like my trim. These come out. L O L. Even though I do like the features of the new one. Since I already have these. I don’t think it’s worth the extra hundred dollars. Especially if the main thing that I would be buying them for is the ability to splice them. Which brings up another problem. It seems that the deals they give you to splice are pretty bulky. I wish they could slim that down a little. Thank you for the video. Lots of good information
Does Govee sell extra lengths/spools of the wire and extra splice kits? The splicing feature is great and I'd need to run longer lengths of wire in several places up through my siding corners between roofs on my house. I'd need perhaps several 10' length of extensions/splices to do so.
I want to install these with the 3m tape (no screws) because it's a rental apartment. Because of the building material, the tape will stick better if the lights are installed points forward instead of down. Do you think it will look bad with the lights pointing forward (away from the building)? : )
Yes, but you won’t be able to use any of the 3M adhesives and it’ll be a major pain to drive tiny screws in their clips while holding onto a ladder if you can’t stick them up first. Not impossible, but hard. My opinion is you should consider permanent lights with channels, like these ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WjlweVd7MZc.html.
Are you able to selectively turn on and off individual lights? For times you just want to accent your home and not have it look like holiday lights. Thanks
Great Video. I literally just installed the original to find out there was a pro. I typically like a candy cane effect and the original "white" is not white at all, very purple blue. I have the govee spot lamps and those produce white that matches my other outdoor lighting. Is the white a true match? I dont want to take down my 100ft unless it is. 😅
Love the review thank you. Question when you did the side by side comparison I see that you have them mounted in some sort of channel cover. Can you please tell me what size they are and were you got them. I haven't been able to find any.
About to use your link to buy the pro. Quick question if I have a 2 story house and want the first and second floor to come together do you just have 1 wire splice into 2 wires. Does that work with these ?
I've just put up two sections of the original and thankfully your video popped up. I'm not seeing a lot of people mention that the power adapter on the new pro can carry 200 ft., that's a game changer for me. The added extension and splicing lines as well as it being black and the warm light feature are going to make me take these down. Hopefully I'll have them up by Halloween. Thanks for your very informative breakdown!
Can you splut the line to have your single line go out 2 directions? ie power in the center and then route a line left of your house and another to the right side of your house?
Are there any lighting feature differences? Can you turn off some lights on the pro vs the original? Are there any different scenes available on the new ones?
These look just what im after....where did you get them from please. i am in the UK and i have done a Google search but there arent any showing !?....Thx, Mark.
I have been considering for a while. Called a pro company (Trimlight) and they wanted thousands of dollars. My hesitation is that my trim is dark brown, so I know white wouldn’t work, maybe black would be ok. I wish they were a little closer together. And an additional $100 seems excessive, but what other options are there.
$100 might be a bit excessive. But if you compare it to the thousands of dollars that the company "Trimlight" wanted to charge you. It's really not a bad deal...
Trimlight quoted me $9,000 to do our simple 1900 sq/ft single story house. I think they will be doing a lot of free quotes without getting any business. Brighthomelights has RGBW Kits that you can buy for a fraction of the price and do them yourself also, but this pro version got me thinking
Great video. You definitely cleared up my confusion on whether to go with the Pro or the original set. Thank you. Do you happen to have any Promo Codes to offset the high price tag? Doesn't hurt to ask.
Ahhhhh so my procrastinating pays off yet again. I had bought the 150' less than 3 weeks ago but it's been in the (unopened) Amazon box since then because procrastination. I guess it was a good thing
I have a question, I was looking to install this lights 14" apart and conceal the loose wire. Have you seen like this set up before? The reason for is i bought 100ft and am only needing around 78ft and instead of cutting the excess lights I just rather compress each light for few inches to get used most out of it. What is your thought on this? Thank you in advance
@@handydadtv thanks for the input, i have the wire cover as well so basically from light to light it was covered and I bought same color as the light. Thanks again
Shopping on Prime Day and found your review to help - loved it! I want the Pros - just need to convince my better half they're worth the extra coin! haha!
Been looking at the original for a while but the pro is everything everyone has been asking for. They actually listened to what the people wanted and needed! Now can we buy a extra 100ft plus extensions without the controller for cheaper?
It really does make sense for them to have two different kinds of products. Marketing likely told them to call it Pro to sell more, just think that was a mistake. The two products perform differently and serve different purposes, they should be called that accordingly; like Govee Outdoor Seasonal and Govee Outdoor Illumination
I’m about to buy these. I’m still on the fence about the Pro Vs original. My question is, do you think the PRO version will have some sort of software updates and even hardware updates that the original will not be compatible with ? This is holding me back making a decision. I like the original has more lights in their strings for effects. But in Pro are is the extra white leds helpful in not over using the original ? Your thoughts on all of this please ? Thank you
I live on the west coast & most if not all of the houses are stucco, is there a way to mount them not using the adhesive which it useless out here. Thx
The adhesive is just for convenience during installation. Long term, you need a clip on both sides of the lights. Use a longer screw than included in the kit.
Was about to buy these and we read they they won't function in temps below -20. Our winters are long and cold, I'm worried these wouldn't work most of the winter.
There is a difference between “won’t function” and “tested to function”. They were only tested to -20. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will fail at -30.
Paying more and getting less lights, I'm not sure about. If I'm putting these on my house, every night is going to be a light show and I want as many lights as I can get dancing around my home. Yes, the better white light is nice, but how often are you going to be running just white light? It is nice to see a company that seems to be listening to its customers I know people have been asking for the black wires (probably the day the first kit came out) and splicing the old kit kills the warranty. So, I'm still on the fence, no shortage of projects around the house maybe next holiday season I'll be picking up the Pro Plus version (or ten grand falls in my lap and I just call Jellyfish? We can all dream right.) Thanks, Dad, for the great informative video.
White would presumably used on non-holidays. The spacing and focused light cones are what make Govee unique. Jellyfish, Gemstone, etc., are just wall washing downlights.
You can't go a week in the states without someone pushing some sort of hallmark holiday. And I'm no expert, but all of these outdoor lights seem to be "wall washing downlights". But if I'm spending $2 on some lights, no matter what they are, if they can dance and move that's what's going to be happening at my home way more than just some white standing still lights. @@handydadtv
I feel like the splicing should be done differently. I could be 100% wrong here, but I think you’re supposed to use your own wires from large end to large end, then the male/female ends are supposed to connect between the Govee pre-made sections. That way, you can make a jump as long as you need and still have the same stand connected.
I assure you, the grommets are perfectly sized for Govee wires. However, I also believe people will attempt to make their own extension cords with them. Trouble is, extensions affect signal quality. I had trouble with it last year: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7hAfBb0e5Z8.html
@@handydadtv I like the video. And that’s 100% what will end up happening to someone who try’s to go too far. Maybe Govee will recognize it and create a solution that costs too much.
My understanding as well is that you can't go beyond 150' regardless of if there are lights there, you will still get flickering at the end. I just want to make sure I can use the full like 180' I need
That was my main concern and why I didn't immediately hop on the permanent outdoor lights because, as the name implies... they should be permanent... right? Not impossible to get off but pretty difficult without potentially leaving some damage. So when the upgrade to the pros come out, will these be hard to take down if I want to upgrade?
I think it depends on the surface material and how well the lights were adhered. It might have no impact on vinyl, but it might cause damage to painted surfaces. Just guessing because I didn’t do any testing with the permanent installation tapes.
I have power right in the middle of where I want these to go, can I splice them in a way where I can send lights to either side with power right in the middle?
First off this is a great video and helped me decide which to purchase. So thank you for that. Second, have you thought of an option for these to be used temporarily on the roof for around Christmas?
I only want the Pro for the customizable white, I think everything else is almost a downgrade. The lights look much better closer together. And for the price difference, especially with the originals on sale I don't know if I can justify the Pro...
How do people put these all around there house if the most you can connect to it is 250ft?. Also where does the power source connect to and how does the setup look. I want to add this to my home but it’s not long enough to go all around and don’t want my cable setup looking like a forest.
Did you try using the factory splices? My splices look good, used factory hardware and am not getting light beyond the splice. I’ve triple checked everything and cannot figure out why. Connected another set to troubleshoot, same results. Any idea? Thanks in advance
Good video, but even after resetting it’s no go. I read a lot on the previous version needing 4 lights minimum. I cut my 3rd set after the 3rd light, added the splice, used a short extension and the continued the remaining segment. Is this the problem? No where in the instruction does it mention where you can and cannot cut. Thanks again
The 4 light minimum is for the original version which automatically detects the number of strings. With the Pro version, you need to set the number of segments in the app.
Thanks for well made video. My question is on the pro set. when using it for white everyday accent lights are all lights lit up all the time or can you have say every 3 or 4 lit but not all? Hope question makes sense. Thanks
@@handydadtv thanks for your response! A friend had lights called Jellyfish installed and they are pretty amazing. Just no where near in my budget. So I'm learning about these Govee lights as a option. Have a great day
I like everything about the pro more except the space apart between the lights. The original has a good spacing so you get a continuous light stream casted as opposed to the pro.
Have you had any experience with the Eufy Lights? I am trying to decide between these and the Eufy. The Eufy are $100 cheaper than the Pros. They have one White LED but sill only 150ft max. I also like that the these Govee's will use the same app as my other govee led's.
Yeah, another reason I should go with the Govee :) One more question. How do you terminate a section you spliced? do they include something like that? So I have my garage which needs 1.5 strands and my house which is 2.5 Strands. I cut one of the garage strands in half to use for the house. How to I terminate that naked garage piece without messing up anything? Thanks!@@handydadtv
